Carrollwood, Florida -- A Wesley Chapel man was critically burned after investigators say a plan to torch his estranged wife backfired.

From her upstairs apartment, Capitola Scott could hear her neighbor, 47-year-old Gloria Davis, shrieking for help and then saw Davis being chased. Scott opened the door, yelling at her to get inside.

Police say the man chasing Davis with a jug full of gasoline was her husband of 25 years, 50-year-old Matthew Wong. The two had been separated since October.

Detectives say Wong had apparently planned to ambush Davis. They say he rented a car and blacked out the windows. But Davis spotted Wong and immediately began to run, screaming for help.

As he frantically chased his wife, investigators say Wong inadvertently splattered gasoline all over himself, and when he went to torch the apartment where his wife was seeking refuge, it was Wong who went up in flames.

Neighbors used fire extinguishers to put out the fire that was consuming him and some nearby bushes. A scorched patch of grass now marks the spot where he fell to the ground.

Investigators say Wong was rushed to Tampa General Hospital with life-threatening burns. They say the couple has two older children who also live in the Bay area.

Come on, please show some damned respect. The guy is in hospital with life threatening burns!!! He clearly has some major issues with his estranged wife.

And al lyou can do is make jokes about his name? That's sick and wong!

No he didn't deserve that. The wife deserved what should have happened. She probably bled him dry financially in court and I think thats evil. A divorce should give the wife just enough money above the poverty line not half the guy's earnings. I would never let my wife take half my money if I was in such a position. I would transport the money to offshore swiss accounts and give her a few thousands saying thats all I got. Then after the court case closes, transfer back the money. You'll loose around 10% but thats better than losing 50%.

I see what you did there.... :shifty: That's so wong of you

I find it fitting that as I read this article, someone is playing the radio in the background here, and Kid Rock is on atm:

"...you get what you put in, and people get what they deserve..."

Also, what an idiot. You have no idea what their situation was. When my husband and I split, I didn't want anything from him--I withdrew only the money from our joint account that I had put in, and even gave him the ring back, because I didn't want anything from him or any reminders. Quit tarring us all with your bitter brush. If this guy would douse his wife with gasoline and set her ablaze, don't you think there's a chance he was abusive to her before? If not abusive, at least not the innocent, loving, hardworking guy you seem to be acting like he was, getting worked over by a heartless con-woman.

(Besides, you forget the man's responsbility in some of those situations--if you marry a shallow, gold-digging ###### of a woman just because she's hot or good in bed or something, you deserve what happens to you.)

    • We had no idea as kids how much time and energy it took to be an adult 😅
    • The Trump administration doesn't want you to use OpenAI's GPT-5.6 without its approval by David Uzondu Image via @realDonalTrump (X) As OpenAI prepares the release of its next model, GPT 5.6, the White House has instructed the company to limit the distribution of the software to a small group of government-approved partners instead of the general public, as it has done with previous releases. According to The Information, OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman sent an internal memo to staff on Thursday explaining that the federal government will approve access "customer by customer" during an initial preview phase. Altman noted in the communication that this restrictive rollout is "not [their] long-term model" for software deployment, and the company plans to work toward a "more sustainable" distribution method later. CNN said that both OpenAI and the Trump administration view the capabilities of GPT 5.6 on the same level as Anthropic's Mythos and that government officials intend to "collaborate with frontier AI labs to develop shared approaches for addressing the challenges of scaling this technology." The latest restriction comes just weeks after the US Commerce Department decided to restrict Fable, a version of Mythos with extra safety "guardrails" to prevent users from exploiting software vulnerabilities. Not long after the release, though, researchers at Amazon found a way to bypass these restrictions, prompting an aggressive response from federal authorities. The government ordered Anthropic to cut off access for non-US citizens located outside the US, non-US citizens living inside the US, and incredibly, even Anthropic's own foreign-born employees. Anthropic now appears to be building a workaround to resolve this compliance block with an update to its Privacy Policy that introduces a category called "Verification Data" to handle KYC and Digital IDs. This setup could mandate digital identity checks to filter users by nationality, requiring a government-issued ID and facial biometric data. Who knows? Maybe in the future, you would have to scan your US Passport or State ID to prove your citizenship before you are allowed to chat with Fable 5 (or any other model).
    • When Windows 7 was released I created an AutoHotkey script that uses Alt+` as a keyboard shortcut to move a window across monitors. I have been using that script for over 15 years and this is the first time I have come across another app that uses the same shortcut!
    • I called it last year that they wouldn't end support when they said there would. There are too many people still on Windows 10 waiting for something better to upgrade to and 11 ain't it! The recent promises of fixing Windows 11's many problems is nice, but unless they deliver on those promises in a big way then I expect customers will still want to stick with 10.
