iPhone 3GS and iPad2 (and possibly iPad3) tethering

Recommended Posts

Hey, I have an iPhone 3GS which does me just great however I am looking at getting an iPad when the iPad3 is announced in the not to distant future.

One thing I cannot seem to find a definitive answer on though is if I am able to tether my 3GS to an iPad and use the phones 3G connection to get web access on the iPad.

I know it is possible with the iPhone 4/4S as I have set it up for others however the 3GS does not have the WiFi hotspot feature (it did in 4.x but was removed in 5.x from what I have read).

The 3GS still has USB and Bluetooth options for tethering which work find on a Windows computer however I cannot find current information on if I can pair my 3GS and iPad over bluetooth to use my phones internet connection on a WiFi only iPad.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

I am in a bit of an annoying position as I can get an iPhone 4S and get rid of my 3GS however the 3GS does all I want/need from a phone so I would rather get an iPad3 when they are released (sometime in March according to the rumours). The problem is I don't want to get the iPad if I cannot get online via my 3GS.

I could get a 4S and then wait a little longer to get the iPad3 (probably in April) but I feel like I am spending a lot of money to upgrade to the 4S when it doesn't offer me much over what I use my 3GS for. I don't care for Siri, the increased power (I don't do anything that requires the A5 CPU on a phone) or the better camera. They would be nice to have but I have lived without them for all of the iPhone 4 and 4S lives so far I can't see a huge reason to upgrade in all honesty.

If I can tether via bluetooth to an iPad then I can wait around until summer and get an iPhone 5 then.

Any information on how the 3GS works with the iPad would be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance :)

I do know that you can use an iPhone 3G tethered to an iPad 2 via Bluetooth to give the iPad access to the internet via 3G (and even Edge!), because I use that exact configuration myself. The IiPhone is version 4.2.1 NOT jailbroken, the iPad is 5.0.1, also NOT jailbroken.

Thanks all.

I have been talking about it with a friend and think the best option is it get a 4S which is what I had planned all along and then pick up an iPad3 in April so that I know everything will work correctly together.

That way I get a nice new iPhone and then a nice new iPad a month later :p

Will probably sell the 4S and get an iPhone 5 when that comes out but it could be as late as September/October as the 4S was only released then and I don't really want to keep my 3GS for another 6+ months as the battery isn't as great as it first was and it is a lot slower than the 4S in general use so while I am not super excited about getting the 4S it will be a nice upgrade if just for the speed. Also means I can FaceTime with family :)

Thanks everyone for their advice, it is much appreciated!
