Microsoft extends support for Windows Vista until 2017

Seen on WinFuture.de:

Microsoft originally intended to stop supporting the home SKUs of Windows Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate) by April 2012. As it turns out the 'Extended Support' period for said SKUs has been extended until April 11, 2017. Which means Vista will receive security updates for another five years. There won't be any feature updates for Vista after the end of mainstream support however - so don't expect to see IE 10 for Windows Vista.

(Do we have any Windows Vista users left on Neowin by the way?)

I never had a problem with Vista.Uneducated people tying to install vista on 10-15 year old hardware was the main issue. uneducated people should use macs... or better yet not a computer at all.

that is impossible

A little harsh. I had an old P4 and Vista was a dog on it, so I just stuck with XP until I had enough $ to build a new machine and put 7 on it, so I skipped the Vista/dual core age. I wasn't very pleased with Vista but I didn't spend countless hours insulting it on forums, I just did it in private hehe.

So you proved CMG_90 correct.

So you proved CMG_90 correct.

10 years ago from Vista release date was around 1997. Pentium 4 wasn't even around back then. A P2 with 128 MB of RAM (around what was back then?) wouldn't even install Vista. So yeah, IMPOSSIBLE is correct. Unless he didn't mean from Vista's release date. Even so a 2002ish computer would be seriously pushing it.

It certainly was disappointing on my old Pentium II 266

Vista release was 2006, 10-15 year old hardware ? You think people were trying to install Vista on hardware from 1991 - 1996 ? (Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 machines ? Seriously ?

The problem was uneducated people who thought Vista had no problems. And those same people who said Windows 7 was nothing but a refresh.... can't believe people still defend that piece of crap

It needs to at least match XP, it doesn't make sense if Vista is newer but the older system gets more support (and therefore some people chose Vista over downgrading to XP for this only reason) otherwise they would be punishing those who took their advice because they wanted a long life cycle.

That's NICE. Big and special thanks to Microsoft. This probably means Windows 7's Home and Ultimate Editions whose support ends in 2015 will also get their support extended to 2020.

Now a Vista Service Pack 3 and IE10 support for Vista would be nice. Both would delight customers.

10 year lifecycle is normal for business/enterprises. Get over your whining and be thankful to Microsoft. Also, this shouldn't affect Windows 7 migrations.

never get your hope high

but they may throw around update Rollup or something (they didn't bother for XP ,before so unlikely as well)

it certainly nice perk to extended security update

    • This saddens me greatly
    • Well again I do not mind seeing it charge my stuff if it does it well. "yeah charge my phone like that, charge it good"
    • Getting so tired of this push for that new useless slop over the less-useless old slop that at this point I just want M$ to have this nice, big, hearty cup of *FU*.
