As it has been described by Paul Thurrott not including it with Windows 8 RTM is exactly how they did the switch over from FAT32 to NTFS. It was a server only thing when it originally came out as well. Give it time to be out in the public and kinks worked out and it will eventually work its way over to the client(Windows 8).

I have tried formatting a usb drive with REFS, the manual way;

  Quote

DISKPART> format FS=REFS LABEL="REFS TEST" QUICK

0 percent completed

DiskPart has encountered an error: The system cannot find the file specified.

See the System Event Log for more information.

DISKPART> format FS=REFS QUICK

0 percent completed

See the System Event Log for more information.

Nothing in event log.

Also Tried with Paragon:

  Quote
DISKPART> format FS=Protogon QUICK

0 percent completed

Virtual Disk Service error:

The file system is incompatible.

but, that message seems to be quite standard;

  Quote

DISKPART> format FS=neobond QUICK

0 percent completed

Virtual Disk Service error:

The file system is incompatible.

I do not think this is a failure... refs has little use in a client operating system, IMO... but I'd welcome any arguments to the contrary... [

Simply it is based on NTFS but alot better.

Why a failure? It is still not fully developed, you cannot boot an OS using it.It will most likely make its way into Windows 9 (at the earliest) or Windows 10.

My post above.

From Techspot:

It will only be available for Windows Server 8 products initially, with Microsoft stating it plans to fully test the file system before offering it on other Windows 8 products in the future.

This has always been the way Microsoft have done things.

I know what ReFS is. Stating "Simply it is based on NTFS but alot better" does not answer the question as to why it's supposedly a failure for it not be on a consumer preview of a client OS.

Preview.............

:o Could that be a keyword?

What point are you trying to make here?

You claim it's a failure. How is it a failure?

I did not comment that ReFS is a failure. I commented it that not allowing (all) people to preview it is a failure.

Please read my posts next time :)

OK, yes, I know that. But this is a preview of the CLIENT not the SERVER. It's not meant to be in the CLIENT yet, it will be rolled out in the SERVER primarily.

It may never even be in a client OS. as it's a server designed file system which may not hold many advantages for client, especially not as client move over to SSD's more and more and it might be more beneficial to move to an entirely new file system designed with SSd's in mind.

Either way you won't see ReFS in the final version of Win 8 either so it won't be in the "preview" of the client.

As to it being "better" than NTFS. yes, for it's purposes, much like a apple peeler is better at peeling apples than oranges.

The client will at some point be compatible with it.

I beg to differ. It may not be in Windows 8 (client) but it might be in the next version of the client...

Dude, so explain why it should be in this version of this client?

Moreover, copatibility with is is probably already there as far as needs be. That doesn't mean that the client should be able to format disks in a file-system that the client doesn't support locally!

Differ ? do you have a problem understanding the meaning of the word "may" ?

Really? huh weird... I format all my drives in neobond and they work fine... little wobbly from drinking while writing files, but it works

Last reply. Im sick of arguing with kids.

It should be in this version of the client to preview it and see what works and doesnt work. Improvements with/without a server being involved, etc.

Yes. I think it will be in the final version (of both) but it may not. My personal opinion is it WILL but I understand because of the reasons and past facts that have been stated here that it may not.

Do you have a problem understanding the thread?

I won't reply anymore to this thread as my question has been answered.
