New iPad was shipped last night.

I was planning to get the 4G version, because I find the Wi-Fi version pointless  .

Exact opposite here in Oklahoma. Only two cities have any sort of usable 4G network but I have wifi at home, work, and school. No sense for me to spend more on a feature I won't be able to use for a few more years anyway.

By all means get the "4G" version...but currently there is no 4G in the UK.

The new iPad runs on 700MHz and 2.1GHz but the UK 4G (when we get it towards the end of this year/start of next) will run on the 800MHz and 2.6GHz frequencies... so the "4G" will not work...of course 3G will still work in the UK and the mobile operators are saying that it should be faster than the iPad 2's 3G connection...dono if thet'll actually pan out but we'll see soon enough...but none the less your paying for a 4G iPad which you won't be able to use...

Personally I'm just gonna teather from my iPhone if I need internet on a bigger screen away from WiFi.

A few years?

Most of the United States still isn't covered with 4G and won't be for years. You have to remember exactly how large the United States really is. There are still parts of the country that don't have 3G.

there are still that dont even have coverage at all. i know a number of people that cant get anything other then landline phone / dialup

And the UK operators won't be able to use the frequiences until Q4 2012 when offcom sells the spectrum from the digital switchover...even then they've have to create the infrastrcture...gonna be 2013 before the UK sees any sort of widespread 4G

The thing is that it is still cheap for the UK to get widespread coverage for no other reason than population density. You can drive 200 miles in a straight line in Oklahoma and never enter any city limits. There are people living in those areas but covering them just isn't cost affective until the price of the technology is driven down. There are parts of USA where the population is 1 person per square mile. You can even find places where there are 10 square miles without a single person living there. When I live in Germany, there was a town every 10 miles or so. Not sure if the UK is the same, but I am fairly certain that on average the population density is much higher not to mention much less land to cover.

Yeah much higher than the US...it won't take them too long to implement and get good coverage to most places...but saying that I stuill can't get 3G or even EDGE, just GPRS back in my home town...I'm OK here at Uni but its a pain whenever I'm back home.

YES! it has arrived! restoring from iCloud atm.

******.... I should have mine in a few hours. UPS delivers to my house after noon so I took the afternoon off. A bit annoying that I can't get an actual time from them and not going to let the package sit on my front porch.

Yeah I've been sat in all day waiting for mine! And now I'm typing from it!

Apple TV finally shipped and is still listed to get here the day after tomorrow.

Also, like others, I got my accessories like the cover already. Reminds me of when I was kid. Opened a christmas present which turned out to be Super Mario. I wasn't allowed to open the big box until last.

lol, yeah it does kind of feel that way doesn't it? :D I remember when I got my first Nintendo as well. That was one of the most happy moments in my life. As far as my ipad, it is on the truck for delivery and I will have it when I get back home from work at about 5:00 - 5:30. I am going to drop everything and boot that bad boy up and start loading my media. :)

    • Google reshuffles its AI coding team as it struggles to catch Anthropic by Karthik Mudaliar Google is already reorganizing the AI coding “strike team” it created roughly two months ago, as it attempts to find ways to close the gap with Anthropic in one of generative AI’s most commercially important areas. According to The Information, Google DeepMind is expanding the team’s focus to include “midtraining,” rather than concentrating only on coding tools and agents. Midtraining takes place after a model’s broad initial training but before the final stages that prepare it to follow instructions and perform specific tasks. In simple terms, it gives developers another opportunity to expose a model to carefully selected data before it is polished for release. That could help Google improve Gemini’s underlying coding abilities instead of relying only on better prompts, interfaces, or post-training. Previous research has found that midtraining can be particularly effective for code and mathematics, where models must move from general language knowledge to more structured tasks. Google reportedly created the original strike team in April. It was led by Google DeepMind research engineer Sebastian Borgeaud, who previously worked on model pretraining, and focused on complex, long-running programming jobs. Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Google DeepMind chief technology officer Koray Kavukcuoglu were also reportedly involved in the effort. DeepMind researchers were said to believe that Anthropic’s coding tools were outperforming Google’s Gemini models, prompting the company to give the project more attention. Anthropic has made coding a central part of its AI strategy through Claude Code and its Claude model family. The company has continued improving that area, with Claude Opus 4.8 offering upgrades for coding and other agentic tasks, along with the now-unavailable Mythos and Fable models. The reshuffle also comes at a time when Google faces increased competition for AI researchers. Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer recently announced that he was leaving Google for OpenAI, while two other researchers who contributed to Gemini and DeepMind projects are reportedly preparing to join Anthropic. It remains unclear whether the reorganized team will produce a new public Gemini model or developer product. No release date, team size, or specific performance target has been disclosed.
