New iPad Demand is 'Off the Charts' with Initial Pre-Order Batch Sold Out

ipad3.jpg

Apple told USA Today that demand for the newest iPad has been "off the charts" and that the initial batch had been sold out:

"Customer response to the new iPad has been off the charts and the quantity available for pre-order has been purchased," Apple said in a statement. "Customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date."

We previously reported that U.S. pre-orders had already been pushed past its March 16th launch date as of Friday morning.

The 3rd Generation iPad will still be available for purchase on March 16th at Apple retail stores, presumably to long lines. The new iPad was announced last week and introduced a Retina Display, A5X Chip, LTE and 5MP Rear Camera.

Not surprising.

I still don't know what people see in what is essentially a giant iPhone that can't make calls, but that?s the market that exists.

you just described every tablet on the market right now... (not saying you are wrong, that's the reason i went with an adroid tab)

Not surprising.

doesnt that make it a giant iPod touch ?

but i got my iPad for exactially that, it was Bigger then my iPod touch.

Not surprising.

Since when? Facetime still works on mine so not sure where you are getting the lie from that it can't make calls.

Tablets can make phone calls but not in the traditional sense. You have Facetime for iPad, You have GTalk for Android Tablets, and you have Skype for both.

You lost me. An Android Tablet with ICS will look like an Android Phone with ICS. Essentially the iPad looks like a bigger iPhone. So I don't get your reason for going Android.

P.S. I have both the iPad 2 and Motorola Xoom (LTE). Hands down the iPad 2 is the better device mainly because there are more optimized iPad apps than there are Android Tablet apps.

Well, you can make calls via VoIP, but that's not really a cellular call in the traditional sense.

I just don't understand the demand for tablets. Sure you get the bigger screen, put you loose so much of the portability of a smartphone. And at the prices being charged, you could get a laptop instead. I guess because I have all those niches being filled with other devices, I don't personally see a need for one and extrapolate it to others.

And Cellular calls are not phone calls in the traditional sense since phone calls were originally not digital. It makes no difference, they are still communications over large distances which is really all that matters, not how it is achieved.

Tablets are entertainment for most people or basic tools. I gave my mom my Xoom with a recipe app. Have a nice cover on it that lets her use it while cooking so it doesn't get messed up. A few people in my company use tablets to give presentations now. Have an Apple TV in most of the conference rooms that lets them stream their iPad2 to the projector. People seem to forget that like a PC, they only have a use if you give them one just like any other tool. I could by a table saw and it would be 100% useless to me regardless of how many of my buddies who work with wood say it is the greatest thing ever. You could buy a tablet, but as you said, you have no need for it because you filled those needs else where, making the tablet 100% useless to you.

You can't get much of a laptop for $500. If anything, a tablet is a cheaper alternative to an ultrabook. I use mine mostly for traveling, but I find it much easier to sit on the couch and use the tablet instead of using the laptop. It's not meant to be carried everywhere like a cell phone, but it is much more portable than a laptop.

I already have a 27-inch iMac at home, I really don't need a second Mac I also have to maintain for on-the-go. For all the heavy stuff I'll use my iMac regardless, so in my case I just need a device for the simpler tasks. An iPad offers that, a smartphone's screen is simply too small. Not to mention tablets are extremely light and thus more out of your way than a notebook would be.

I really thought about getting a 11-inch MacBook Air, but its screen is just way too small for a full desktop OS.

you are calling people who buy an ipad a bunch of lemmings but you follow a hockey team that's been crap at best for the last 5-6 years? awesome...

Off topic, but I dont think you understand what lemmings means. It refers to people that follow the crowd. So him liking the Oilers is the opposite of being a lemming, so I dont get your comparison. If he was a NY Rangers fan, then I would say the lemming label would be accurate.

I know one thing for sure. I preordered on the 8th and mine is arriving on the 16th. I held off for the most part on getting an ipad for the first 2 generations, but I couldn't resist now that they added such a beautiful display!

cause i don't have an android phone... wanted to switch it up. but i agree ipad's are better.

IMO, Android is better on the phone, iOS is better on the tablet.

lol my opinion is the exact opposite of yours. I think widgets on a cell phone screen are a waste, work WAYYYYYYYY better on a tablet sized device. i don't like android on phones, i only like it on tablets. love ios/my iphone (jailbroken of course)

you just described every tablet on the market right now... (not saying you are wrong, that's the reason i went with an adroid tab)

That's not true. The original Galaxy Tab (not the US ver) could make calls. Granted you have to have a SIM card, but it will work. If I owned one (US ver), I could put a new ROM on it and make calls. Very simple.
