Can you please stop installing crap on your PC? You don't have to install directx9 in Windows 8.

Some older games / addons require Direct X 9. (Example: Decal Plugin Enviroment for Asheron's Call requires Direct X 9.0c regardless of what version(s) of Direct X you have installed.)

Can you please get better informed before you start spouting crap.

It's true, some older games come out with errors because they expect older dx9 dlls. Now, it might be the case that there is a better workaround than installing directx 9 but on windows 7, it's what I did to fix this issue with quite a few titles and never had any trouble. I can't seem to do it on windows 8.

Games that needs updated/specific version of DirectX have to install it during the game setup, period.

For example for Skyrim, you have to reinstall it. This one is tricky because you have to verify the game file, and when you start the game it will install the correct DirectX packages too.

You shouldn't install manually directx since many games aren't using the same (sub)version of directx 9 (or 10 or 11).

Use this to get the latest DirectX 9 libraries, some of which are probably missing from Windows 8. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

So your suggestion to get directx 9 to install on windows 8, is to install directx 9?...

I'm sorry but I think you must misunderstand me. It refuses to install at all. Can't see why. I wondered if anyone else had this issue and knew how to resolve it.

I get the same error with both the offline installer and the web installer.

i did install directx9 using the runtime web installer as Toki mentioned because MPC needs it.

This is what i would do for the problem.......clear all temp files using CCleaner, restart system then run the web installer as admin

btw i use x64 of Windows8

and i have net framework 4.5 installed

The thing you are actually looking is to update DirectX. Yes, it needs to be updated in order to some games work.

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35

Then, if you want to or force applications/games into DirectX 9, just run compatibility with Windows XP:

For running compatibility mode in Win XP do the following:

Right click on the .exe file of the application/game -> Properties -> "Compatibility" Tab -> Check Run this program for previous version of Windows -> Select Windows XP Service Pack 3.

You are ready to go.

Hope that this helps (Y)

If the link above does not help, then try downloading and installing this:

Hope it helps.

Edit:

P.S: This should fix the missing file errors you are having, if not post back and I'll try to help...

i had no problem installing the full redistributable. http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=8109

it does prompt you to install .net 3.5 during setup - maybe the web installer doesn't do this??

The web installer worked fine for me, without needing to install .NET. However the OP said both redistributable and web installers don't work for him :(

I've been experiencing some difficulty with installing driectx 9 on Windows 8 as well. I initially had problems when I tried to play a game on my computer which had Windows 7. I tried various solutions, but essentially Windows wouldn't allow me to install directx 9 because I had a newer version (directx 11) and didn't need directx 9.

I then upgraded to Windows 8 and figured the problem would be solved. I tried to load the game and ran into the same issue. I took GreyWolf's advice and installed it in safe mode. This seems to have worked, but I am now getting the error message "The MSS DLL file is installed in the Windows or Windows system directory - it must be installed in the application directory." I have no clue what that means or how to fix it. Any help would be much appreciated.

The DirectX redistributable is MANDATORY for many older games in Windows 8. Microsoft announced there will not be newer DirectX redistributable but that does not mean that Windows 8 ships with the whole DX9c redistributables: they only included just the latest 2 libraries but many games relies on older ones. Same for the .NET Framework: Windows 8 comes with Framework 4.5 but it doesn't come with anything below 4 (3.5, 3.0, 2.0, 1.0, none of those are present).

I have installed the redistributable on Windows 8 without any issue, if the web version doesn't work try the full version that you can find here.

hi, do you know directx 9 needs for lots of games and windows 8 doesnt support directx 9 for that reason we can not play games in windows 8... if you said we dont need to install directx9 in windows8 explain it then!! how i will play battlefield 3, dota, crysis 3 in windows 8 ?!!

DirectX 9 is perfectly fine to install on Windows 8 x86 or x64 and is required for lots of Windows DirectX based games to run.

.Net 3.5 (.Net 2.0 & 3.0) is available from Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features on /off.

If Direct X 9 wont install on your machine then you have a lot of issues if .Net 3.5 is added correctly.

Not quite sure this would work:

http://www.microsoft...ls.aspx?id=7352

The Microsoft Application Compatibility toolkit:

Once installed you can- create a DirectX version lie shim for the installer- Which basically lies to it says it has what it needs. Then then install finishes to try the game which should work fine since it actually has a later DX9 than it calls for. Also you could use this tool to get the DX to install if it does not work correctly.

+1

Though I have always been wondering why they didn't include it by default.

:pinch:

several legitimate programs scream that directx is not installed in windows 8, including winamp and potplayer.

Windows does not come with all directx files for some reason, i always use the web installer from microsoft website.

Thanks TokiToki! :)

Installing the RuntimeLibs http://www.microsoft...ails.aspx?id=35 worked fine for me on Windows 8, 64bit! I had no sound in Skyrim on Windows 8, now everything is perfect. Of course the runtime libraries of v9 did not overwrite the DirextX11-Installation.

    • It is fundamentally impossible to secure delete files, especially on newer HDDs and all SSDs. You never know how the controller firmware is going to layout data or copy data around to optimize access or invoke wear leveling. The only way to securely “delete” something is to put it on an encrypted file system and forget the encryption key, assuming any apps you open the files in don’t copy the files to a local cache on the boot volumes.

    • LibreOffice closes in on Office, leaves Windows 7/8 behind in 25.8 Beta 1 by David Uzondu The Document Foundation has released LibreOffice 25.8 Beta 1 for public testing on Linux, macOS, and Windows. This is the second pre-release for the 25.8 cycle and the foundation says that the final, stable version of LibreOffice 25.8 is expected to land at the end of August 2025. Starting off with Writer, LibreOffice's Word, the developers have finally addressed some long-standing annoyances, including a new command to easily insert a paragraph break right before a table. This beta also introduces a useful privacy feature in its Auto-Redact tool, letting you strip all images from a document with a single option. To use it, go to Tools and select the Auto-Redact option: The application has improved its ability to handle different languages for punctuation, preventing mix-ups in multilingual documents. Other notable improvements have also been made. A new hyphenation rule lets you choose to prevent a word from splitting at the end of a page, moving the whole line to the next page instead. Microsoft Word has had this feature for years now. The Navigator now displays a handy tooltip with word and character counts for headings and their sub-outlines. Scrolling behavior when selecting text has been improved, making it less erratic. A new command with a keyboard shortcut was added for converting fields into plain text. Calc gets a lot of new functions that bring it closer to its competitors like Excel, including TEXTSPLIT, VSTACK, and WRAPROWS. Impress now properly supports embedded fonts in PPTX files, which should reduce headaches when sharing presentations with PowerPoint users. Alongside these additions, the project is also cleaning house; support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 has been completely dropped. There are also smaller UI tweaks across the suite, like allowing a single click to enter rotation mode for objects in Writer and Calc. macOS users get better integration, with proper support for native full screen mode and new window management features from the Sequoia update. In terms of performance, the team has optimized everything from loading huge DOC files and XLSX spreadsheets with tons of conditional formatting to simply switching between sheets in Calc. These improvements should be noticeable, especially when working with complex documents. A new application-wide "Viewer mode" has also been implemented, which opens all files in a read-only state for quick, safe viewing. On a related note, The Document Foundation has joined efforts by the likes of KDE to encourage Windows 10 users to switch to Linux. Also, you might have heard that Denmark, in a bid to lessen its reliance on Microsoft, has decided to make a full switch to LibreOffice, with plans to begin phasing out Office 365 in certain ministries as early as next month. If you're interested in this release, you can read the full release notes and download the binaries for your platform: Windows, macOS (Intel | Apple Silicon), or Linux (DEB | RPM). You can also get the latest stable version from our software stories page.
