I remember at one time Neowin content was said to be safe for anyone over 13. Is that still the case? I'm seeing more and more posts that violate that policy and less and less topics removed or locked because of it. I realize the backlash when something gets closed (1st ammendment bla bla bla) and I don't mind either way (since I'm waay over 13) but I'd still like to know.

A couple of seconds ago I clicked a link in the Jokes forum which took me to a drawn picture of a naked woman. Like I said, I don't care seeing that, but it was kind of awkward that my son was in the room at the time. I don't know whether I should report the link or not.

Again, I'd just like to know for the sake of knowing if I should wait until after bedtime to surf Neowin from now on.

That's the thing. I have in the past and nothing gets done. I'm sure you get a lot of "false" reports that you have to sift through, but we have no idea whether it was recieved or acted on or what. Maybe if a post is Reported wrong, you should let the user know that posts like that shouldn't be reported.

Although I guess that might open it up for more discussion...

Well, here's my point exactly. I reported a link last night (the one with the naked woman) and this morning nothing was done.

So I ask again, has the site shifted it's policy, are the mods overworked, or what?

What's the deal of people trying to hide their kids from seeing naked people? It wasn't pr0n, so where's the issue. If it doesn't see it on your computers, it will see it either:

- At friends house

- On the internet

- Sexual education in school

- On TV during the day

I don't expect you to understand, as I don't think at 23 you have any kids. I was 23 once too, and I'm sure I felt the same way. The thing is, I'm not 23 anymore, and am a father. Having responsibility for someone's life is pretty awesome (and I mean that in the straight definition, not the slang). There are various things that they will find on their own, and they are hard to explain to someone that young.

The point that you're trying to make is that if you can't see it here, you'll see it somewhere else. Other people say when there are violent or sexual things in the media (TV/radio/internet/whatever) that it's the parents responsiblity to guard their children against it. That's all I'm trying to do.

Again, I don't expect you to understand but I'm positive that if you have kids, someday you will.

Please don't take this to be a high-and-mighty approach. I'm seriously trying to answer the qurestion you ask and explain my rationale behind it. If you don't agree with me, that's fine too. But at the end of the day, they still are my kids and I'd like to raise them in the way I would find the most appropriate. And, yes, although I vowed in my youth it would never happen, I have become more prudish as I get older, especially after the children arrived in my life.

I've been brought up the liberal way, noone has tried to hide anything from me, whatever type of stuff it was. I've even received sexual education while being young, so no, I won't understand you, even the day I'll have kids. Unless you'll going to claim that your kid is 6 or something, I don't understand it AT ALL.

Well, my son is a couple months away from 4, and the image was something I wouldn't want him seeing.

And trust me when I tell you that your view on life changes drastically when you have a child. I wouldn't believe it before, so I can understand where you're coming from. At your age I was married to my first wife, and bar-hropping and clubs were pretty much all we were in to. We vowed never to have children. That's actually what broke us up. A couple of years later, my mentality changed and I wanted to settle down while she didn't.

Anyways, that's probably more than you wanted to know about me in the first place. All I can say is that don't think your current opinion will be the one that you carry with you for the rest of your life.

To answer your question, Yes we try to keep Neowin "clean" for ages 13 and up. However in NSSA (The Lounge) and Jokes section you can expect some adult oriantated jokes that might be revealing but not porn (as we don't allow pornography on Neowin)

My suggestion is to stay away from the jokes section and The Lounge (and its sub forums) when young kids are present, incase the accompanying image is unsuitable for under 13's. We remove anything too graphic from the jokes section when its reported and deemed unacceptable :)

i personally think the mods do a great job. its hard to get rid of everything, and to do it right away, but i've been pleased overall.

Ironman, i'd guess you reported that topic, closed the window so your son couldn't see it, and went about your business right? Well, good, that's what you should have done, and now you just have to trust the mods to get their job done. I'm not disagreeing with you (or agreeing really - i'm pretty much only around the main news threads so i don't see much of this smut you speak of). But i've been impressed with the mods _from what i've seen_.

    • EA launches in-game advertising platform for brands to "connect with audiences" by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe The gaming giant Electronic Arts is exploring more ways to inject real-life brands into its games. Announced today as EA Advertising, the new platform is attempting to make it easier for brands to reach out for deals with the company and put their products inside titles like EA Sports FC, Madden, NHL, Skate, or The Sims. EA revealed that its EA Sports side of the company brings in "hundreds of millions of players across console, PC, and mobile" every year. Fan engagement of these titles was also touted as being "extraordinary," with 23,000 NFL seasons worth of games being played in Madden NFL daily, while EA Sports FC sees over a billion matches a day. “Players come to EA’s games and live experiences every day to play, watch, create and connect,” said David Tinson, Chief Experiences Officer at Electronic Arts. “That gives brands a meaningful opportunity to show up in ways that add value and respect the player experience, while maintaining authenticity in the worlds our teams are building. With EA Advertising, we’re helping brands become part of those moments in ways that are relevant and built for players.” Using the new program EA Advertising, brands will be able to inject their products into games in real-time via dynamic placement. EA says partners will have access to everything from stadium signage in sports games and targeted adverts to in-game content custom-made for the brands. These are described as additions designed to "enhance, not disrupt" experiences. "In these interactive gameplay environments, brands become part of the game itself, reflecting how players engage with advertising in real-world contexts," adds the company "Brands can activate across live environments, tailoring placements to meet campaign objectives, and update campaigns with ongoing optimization informed by aggregated engagement insights." Current real-world brand partnerships EA has built into its games include Visa (EA Sports FC and College Football), Lowe's (EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, and College Football), Red Bull (EA SPORTS FC), Xfinity and Peacock (EA SPORTS FC), and Mountain Dew’s (College Football).

    • UK to ban under-16s from social media following a six-week trial with teenagers by Paul Hill Credit: Pexels A few months ago, Neowin reported that the UK was trialing a social media ban with 300 teenagers for six weeks, that testing has come to an end, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the country will ban under-16s from social media. Starmer said that this technology is making children unhappy and making it easier for bullies to harass and abuse them. He continued to talk about the addictive nature of social media, saying that it uses an infinite scroll designed to lock users in for hours. He said this interferes with children doing their homework, reading, playing with friends outside, and going to bed on time. Tackling the idea that nothing can be done about social media, Starmer said: The government’s action won’t stop at social media either, the PM said. It plans to take action on gaming services and livestreaming platforms. Right now, he said, strangers can contact any child unchecked. He said this wouldn’t happen in real life, and the government is going to stop it from happening online, too. The Labour government has overseen the introduction of the Online Safety Act, a big change to the internet which includes age verification on adult websites. This has led to a fair bit of backlash, but overall, the government is pushing ahead with these changes.
