well, it is a mobile OS in big part... who wants startup sound on their tablet or laptop? don't think there will be on default setting...

can you imagine a startup sound every time you unlocked your tablet/phone/whatever device? yikes! (if it was only a reboot startup sound, how ofter do you reboot your phone or tablet? rarely)

My Windows Phone makes a sound every time I unlock it  It's just a subtle little click though and I quite like it.

Having said that, I don't see the point of the Windows startup sound and certainly don't think it should be there for people with slow computers

Not everyone has modern hardware now do they?

No, but Windows 8 happens to boot up incredibly fast even on older hardware.

And yes, the sound was removed for performance reasons. I think startup sounds are annoying, and it's not only Windows. It's kinda funny when a MacBook goes BOOOOOOONG when some of my friends turn it on in a discrete environment.

I agree with most everyone; the startup sound was kind of stupid. I'm glad they made a separate checkbox for it in the Sounds schemes dialog even. I've always turned it off. On the other hand, I really hope they restore the ability to change your system fonts (Window titles, dialog box, icon font, etc.) I really can't understand why they'd remove that functionality completely, at least for desktop/laptop devices.

I agree, I don't like that I can't change the system fonts to what I want, like in Win7 and previous versions.

Just one question.... How come a little kb audio file impacts that dramatically the performance?

If the systems can boot in as little as 3sec then playing a 1.x sec sound is about 33% of boot time? :/

The boot process doesn't come to a halt while the sound plays, the sound can easily continue to play while the system is booting. It's basically the processing time required to start and play the sound... which is effectively nothing at all on anything manufactured in the last ~15-20yrs.

I can definitely say that removing bootup/shutdown/logon sounds has done nothing at all to improve the speed on Win7. Playing a couple second long audio clip just isn't remotely stressful enough on the hardware to have even the tiniest impact.

It doesn't come to a halt but I think MS had blogged that at times the boot process is so fast that it needed to wait on the sound to finish playing (or something like that, obviously IIRC).

Every little bit counts. ;) And it is frankly unnecessary.

You should have quick jingle in (U)EFI Mac-style meaning your hardware is "OK", like some other manufacturers already do. After that it isn't really required for a second one from Windows. ;)

Right, because on today's hardware a quick jingle is likely to have a severe impact on startup performance. Gimme a break.

Nobody suggested the performance impact was "severe". But a startup jingle is unnecessary and impacts system performance, as the operating system has to initialise a hardware subsystem. There are other issues as well, like the speakers being too loud or booting up your computer in a quiet environment. And I don't know about anyone else but I find hearing the XP startup sound cringe-worthy.

It would be nice if there was an option for those that want it, though it should be disabled by default.

Just one question.... How come a little kb audio file impacts that dramatically the performance?

I think it has to do with initializing the audio driver... It probably takes 3 seconds at most, but they probably chose to initialize it after the system boots up..

Sooo, shaving off 3 seconds of boot time is actually very considerable.

You have proof it impacts system performance in a truly noticeable way?

    • Google is opening the world's first AI museum in Los Angeles by Ivan Jenic Image via: Google Ever since AI image generators went mainstream, the debate over whether AI-generated art is real art hasn't let up. Those who don’t consider AI to be art say that if a machine does the creating and anyone can prompt it, there’s no skill involved, and therefore no art is produced. The counter-argument is equally persistent, as defenders of AI-generated artworks often claim that AI is just a tool, and that every major technological breakthrough, like the camera or the computer, was met with the same skepticism before eventually being accepted as a legitimate creative medium. Google’s position in this debate is clear. Which is no surprise, as the company is investing billions in AI infrastructure. And now, in efforts to encourage people to use its AI even more, Google is opening Dataland on June 20, which it's calling the world's first AI arts museum. Located inside The Grand LA, a Frank Gehry-designed building in Los Angeles, the museum spans 25,000 square feet. The museum is built around a collaboration with media artist Refik Anadol, who has worked with Google since 2016. The inaugural exhibition is called Machine Dreams: Rainforest, and is powered by an AI model trained on “an extensive dataset of the natural world.” It generates 1.2 billion pixels of visuals in real time and reacts to visitors dynamically. The space also generates soundscapes, real-time emotion sensing, and algorithmically produced scents. Image via: Refik Anadol Studio / Google Google says that the museum is powered by its Gemini models, which run on Google Cloud. So, everything is generated inside one of Google’s AI data centers and is streamed to the museum. Alongside the museum opening, Google Arts & Culture is funding an AI Artist Residency, giving four artists $25,000 grants each, along with mentorship from Refik Anadol Studio and access to Google's machine learning tools. Their work will be shown at Dataland and on the Google Arts & Culture website later this year. Google’s AI museum will undoubtedly initiate a fired-up debate on social media, and we can’t wait to see the first reactions. Via: Smithsonian Magazine
    • Calling GTA 6 overhyped crap doesn’t make you edgy, it just makes you sound like someone who hasn’t enjoyed anything since the PS2 era.
    • I’m not arguing whether Rockstar likes money. Obviously, they do, they’re a business. I’m saying this isn’t new. They’ve always launched console first. This is just how Rockstar operates.
    • I'm not sure how old the school is, but they've been doing this since GTA 3. Back in those days we'd be lucky for game companies to release on the PC at all. And with the current state of Sony (or Microsoft) their gaming wing won't be getting a penny from me.
