gmail How do I remove the 'Important' label from Gmail?

I use Thunderbird to manage all of my email accounts via IMAP, and am trying to figure out how to remove the stupid Important label and folder from within gmail's web gui. Is there a way to remove it? It seems to be keeping a copy of every message received (except SPAM) in the Important folder.

Go to Mail Settings ->Labels

you have the options there to hide any labels... you can even disable it from showing in imap
