Microsoft finally fixes Classic Outlook bug breaking Gmail sync

Microsoft fixes month-long Classic Outlook bug blocking Gmail and Yahoo sync, caused by Microsoft 365 issue, with delayed sign-in prompt workaround.

Yesterday, we learned how Microsoft is making the New Outlook a lot better by revamping the People experience so that search becomes lightning fast. However, that doesn't mean that the company has ditched Classic Outlook just yet, as it has now fixed a longstanding bug that was annoying many customers of that software.

Since February 26, Classic Outlook users who had added their Gmail and Yahoo accounts to the email client were unable to sync their content. This would happen even if you reset your password, and you would not be prompted to sign in again. Customers would typically receive the following errors:

  • Task 'Synchronizing subscribed folders for [email protected].' reported error (0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook cannot synchronize subscribed folders for [email protected].'
  • Sending reported error (0x800CCC0F), or Sending reported error (0x80070057)
  • Check for new mail reported error (0x800CCC0E)

This is a pretty major breaking bug, but the good news is that Microsoft has finally managed to fix it after almost a month. It was apparently due to an issue in the Microsoft 365 service that was resolved on March 20, according to Microsoft's support article.

Microsoft notes that you may still experience the error even after a password change, but that happens because it takes around an hour for the OAuth token to expire. Once it does, you'll be prompted to sign in again.

However, if you do not want to wait an hour, the Redmond tech giant has some lengthy and complex workarounds that you can follow to mitigate the issue here. They involve modifying the keys in the Windows Registry, so if that's not your cup of tea, it's probably better to wait for the OAuth token to expire. If you are a victim of this bug, you've been experiencing it for almost a month, you can probably wait for another hour.
