Anyone excited about BlackBerry 10?

Recommended Posts

It's pretty much nothing but gloom and doom for RIM lately, but personally I'm really looking forward to see what RIM is capable of delivering when the chips are down. I've never owned a BlackBerry myself, but some of the stores in my area have Playbooks on display, and the OS is perhaps the best one yet I've seen on a tablet. The multitasking system is really slick, and compatibility with Android apps sounds like it's going to cover for a lot of RIM's own weaknesses.

Unless RIM really screws something up in a big way, I'll most likely be picking up a BB10 device for myself later this year. Anyone else looking to do the same? Long-time BlackBerry users, are you staying loyal or jumping ship?

I am looking forward to it, as I own a playbook and am very excited to see what OS10 brings to it. OS2.0 kicks ass as is, has true multi-tasking capability (was there in 1.0 too). I think OS10 will bring a lot to the table.

The Playbook is very slick, I agree. But then again, Android is a mess on tablets, and iOS is bringing nothing new to the table, really, so being better the two of them isn't really saying much. As much as I want to be optimistic about support for Android apps on the Playbook, the obvious flipside is that a lot of Android apps don't really run all that well on the tablet. But if RIM could bring Android app support to BB10 phones...

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is an ace tablet, hardly a mess...

I'm excited about it. I like my BB, the whole company uses them and we just deployed a bunch of PlayBooks to some of the execs. I was impressed with the hardware--it runs smoother than my Samsung Galaxy Tab sometimes (don't get me wrong, I *adore* my Galaxy) and overall just feels very smooth and professional. If the new phone OS is at least as good as that, it will be pretty slick. I can testify that the "swiping-suggested words" on the keyboard is both useful and fun--I played a game of "let's see what kind of funny story I can make using just the words it suggests and choosing randomly" for a good half-hour when I first starting exploring the PlayBook. Also, the timeline lens for the camera sounds cool. RIM was top of the line at one point and I sincerely hope to see them catch back up after they rested on their laurels a bit too long. So far, looking good.

And to answer the OP's question--staying loyal for now :)

no, im not excited at all. as far as im concerned, the OS could be amazing, but theyre lacking dev support. Companies are already quitting app development. and now RIM's new OS isnt even due out until the fall?

i think im also very tainted having used a Blackerry Curve for over 2 years. what a pile that thing was.

I think it's perhaps too late for them to knock the competition dramatically, but their new smartphone concept does look nice, but if they continue down that road, they'll likely alienate their main audience left, the people desiring a good qwerty keypad.

I'm pretty sure there's going to be some keyboard-based devices when BB10 is officially launched. Not having that happen would be unthinkable.

Developers are coming on board but just for the Playbook OS because it's the future. The old Blackberry OS is dead. Even Angry Birds Space has already come out on the Playbook before Windows Phone.

I've always disliked Blackberry devices but the Playbook changed my opinion and showed they can create great software and hardware so I'm thinking the Blackberry 10 phone will replace my iphone 3g.

I wouldn't say I'm too excited about it. I am genuinely curious about what BB10 is going to offer; what they demoed in the keynote today looked good. Coupled with solid hardware and enough 3rd party support BB10 can make an impact. More in the enterprise than with home users though.

Agreed, I strongly prefer a physical keyboard, and while the BB touchscreen devices I've worked with so far are nice, I prefer my Bold at the moment. Until the new ones come out :D
