depends if he was given it by Virgin media or via 'a friend' - it will need to be activated by a Virgin engineer but speaking as one with knowledge the hub is unfortunately a giant POS that's the bane of many users lives - just read the Virgin media forums to see what I mean :(

If Virgin Media provided him with it, assuming they did since they're upgrading everyone's area. Just plug it in and it'll work fine - if you have faults, it's the crappy modem, try upgrading the firmware.

If provided by a friend, it won't work, Virgin stop you switching modems with people I believe.

The SuperHub sucks, but yes, chances are that it will work. I got a VMNG300 from a friend that was upgraded to the SuperHub and they transferred it to my account. No problem what so ever. I've heard many stories of that not being the case, though, so I might have gotten lucky.

Technically if it wasn't issued to you by Virgin Media then you shouldn't plug it in as A you are not allowed to plug unauthorised items in to the cable socket on your wall. I know it is a Virgin Superhub but unless send from them it is not authorised and B if it was someone else' it will probably have been disabled on the Network now. If you want to upgrade to a newer modem your best bet if just give them a call and say your modem is having problems. Usually they will run a few tests then send a new one in the post.

If you get a superhub, don't use it, the old modems they supplied are capable of 100mbs and the routers inside the superhub make a virus ridden Windows ME computer look stable

Not sure what modem you're talking about, but if you mean the ambit 2050 ones then no, they're capable of 20Mbps

Ironically one of my reasons for leaving VM business was that if I wanted an upgrade, they forced you to have the superhub, you couldn't use your own router or anything, it HAD to be a superhub, and I told them I didn't want wifi or anything and they said 'NO, its a requirement'. Oh well, smart move I guess, gonna be paying ?5/month less, having no traffic shaping/limiting AND having 6 times faster internet, not a bad deal! :)

There's an option in the superhub settings to use it as a modem only, no need to use the router functionality of it at all.

Not sure what your talking about. The VM Superhub works very well, I've had no problems with it and got mine a few months ago.

It is a pile of turd even in modem mode from my experience.

Your experience does not resemble mine then, had zero problems with it. Have you tried it with the latest firmware? V5.5.2R30 ?

I have the latest firmware and can safely say mine is not that good, wifi issues, required reboots and only had it a few weeks. But it is fast :)

I was told that its amazing last night by friends and the fact i cant setup WPA2 and my Galaxy S2 phone is my fault and not the Superhub. Anyone had any luck setting it up with Galaxy S2 ? Ive only had it a few days but try as i may i couldnt set it up unless it was set to WEP, which is a no no.

R30 is almost a year old and still buggy. Are you using your Superhub in modem mode or as a modem/router? Try some heavy usage over wireless with up to 300Mbps mode and I'm sure you will run into trouble.

can't you use it as a modem only and use your own router?

I can't belive, also that NETGEAR made the thing! VM must have done something to **** NETGEAR off or they botched it with thier crappy firmware!
