vB or IPB

I remember IPB releasing beta versions of IPB 2.0 claiming that it will be a free product, then with final release started charging for it, everyone who upgraded to 2.0 beta had to start paying or be exposed to security holes. Invision have every right to charge for thier product, but it it was still a dick move to mislead people with a bait and switch. This incident really sticks in my mind about the company, although the software itself is very good and worth the price (providing that you are purchasing it WILLINGLY).

Another vote for ipb... we switched from vbulletin to ipb and overall have been happy. I have found that there seem to be less settings to play with and more code modifying to do some things but overall I would say ipb is superior (especially in the mobile arena.... the ipb mobile website is the best one I have ever seen for a forum including those cutomized "apps").

speaking of which I have always wondered if neowin uses the ip.content for the front page or something else like wordpress? I have started to play around with ip.content some but have not had a ton of luck getting it to do anything like the fronpage here (which in my view is the best forum/homepage integration I have ever seen)... just curious how its being done.

100% custom code, written by myself and members of the dev team

It's actually in the footer (if you manage to view it on the portal )

Although the link doesn't really explain what Ignition is, so you'd still need to know it was made by the Neowin devs.

-------

I'm more used to IPB myself (most forums I visit use it, so yeah). I can't really say much vBulletin, haven't used it much yet. There's probably stuff to like and hate about both of them though.

It used to say more about it, I guess we cut it down a bit

Right. But thread subscription system is useless. Post subscription system is what let you not to miss any replies.

I never subscribe anyway, it's just annoying, maybe if there's a thread I want to be able to locate again far in the future, but otherwise no. I just use "view new content" which works great in iPB, especially witht he new filters allowing me to filter only topics I participated in as well. view new content is pretty much my sole interaction with this forum, I don't bother searching through the sub forums manually for new threads, I just scan the new content.

vBulletin is a load of crap. Awful outdated and ugly. Whenever you would see a forum with vb4 you would not bother to register instead normally you would leave right away and when it comes to vb 3.x then its just a joke, this is 2012, there is no need for outdated garbage.

IPB is awesome and much better than vb.

    • Salesforce to acquire Fin, formerly Intercom, for over $3 billion by David Uzondu Image via DepositPhotos.com Salesforce today announced that it has reached an agreement with customer support software company Fin to buy the company for around $3.6 billion. Salesforce expects the transaction to close in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2027, and the acquisition will not change its financial guidance previously announced on May 27. Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, in its press release, claimed that acquiring the startup gives Salesforce an immediate AI agent that resolves support tickets across email, WhatsApp, SMS, and Slack: You might know Fin by its former name, Intercom. If you have ever been on a website or inside a mobile app and noticed a little chat bubble widget floating in the bottom right corner of your screen, often featuring a friendly face and a message like, "Hi! How can we help you today?" you were almost certainly looking at Intercom. Intercom became Fin just last month, transforming itself into an "AI-first" platform that handles customer issues with little need for humans to intervene. The new name originates from the company's highly successful AI customer service agent, which it launched way back in 2023. This digital assistant supposedly resolves about 76% of customer service volume end-to-end on its own, so the business rebranded to match its primary software tool. Fin's new owners, Salesforce, went on an acquisition spree over the last few years, and some of them you might recognize, like its 2020 $27.7 Billion acquisition of Slack. The last few months saw the enterprise giant buy several startups, including m3ter, Momentum, Cimulate, and Contentful. Salesforce said that when the Fin deal pulls through, customers will "deploy AI agents across" various service operations, which will complement Agentforce, the platform that enables businesses to deploy customizable autonomous digital workers.
