The firmware for Samsung's Galaxy S III has leaked just over a week ahead of the device's release. While you can't flash the ROM to another phone just yet, developers are able to poke around inside and could be bringing elements of the TouchWiz Nature UX experience to a wider audience at some point. The first major finding to come out of the leak, however, is an APK for S Voice, Samsung's Siri-style voice control application. It seems to work on any device running Android 4.0 ? we tested the app on a Galaxy Nexus and a Sharp Aquos Phone, and got it up and running largely without issue barring a couple of crashes.

It's clear that S Voice has been modeled very much in Siri's image

Obviously, we don't want to pass anything resembling a final judgement on leaked software that was designed for different hardware. It's clear, though, that S Voice has been modeled very much in Siri's image, right down to the near-identical microphone icon at the bottom. The software hooks into Android and lets you set calendar events, send messages to contacts, get Wolfram Alpha-powered answers to questions, find out weather forecasts, and so on. Voice recognition was mostly solid, but we had a few problems getting it to parse various names, and "The Verge" remains a common stumbling block for this kind of software. S Voice's voice itself is a coldly mechanical female affair, some way away from Siri's personable and slightly coquettish mannerisms (or indeed the dulcet male tones found in the British version).

It also seems that S Voice isn't quite as attuned towards natural speech as Siri. For example, whereas Apple's service will helpfully respond to vague statements like "I'm in the mood for Italian food," S Voice won't offer any advice beyond suggesting a web search. Even a more direct question like "Where's a good Italian restaurant?" sends you to Google, and the tutorial advises using much less fluent syntax such as "Text Katie message are you free tonight for dinner." S Voice doesn't make much effort to indulge more esoteric queries, either, though it does at least tell you that the meaning of life is 42.

Overall, S Voice is the closest approximation of Siri we've seen (in English, at least), but it's not quite as fluid ? at least in its current form. We're looking forward to giving it, and the rest of Samsung's Nature UX, a fuller workout when we review the Galaxy S III itself.

It's good and parts of it work flawlessly, but there are some problems.

- It doesn't remember memos.

- Bluetooth headset control is very sketchy; half of the time the command button doesn't start S-Voice; the voice feedback doesn't play when connected to a bluetooth headset, so sometimes the phone is waiting for further information from you but you don't know that because you can't hear the voice feedback.

- Trying to add a new event to the calendar force closes.

This could be because I'm running an AOKP ROM rather than Samsung, mind you.

Not working on AOKP M5 for me. Keep getting "Network error, please try again"

ahh, ok. Didnt see that. Hopefully someone will crack it.

One site I read said you "just need to change the build.prop file" - I haven't tried this or looked into it in any great detail.

Edit: sounds easy - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664785

You can download a modded APK file that has the SGS III device string hard coded in so you don't have to change your build.prop. It's not really worth it though. Just download Vlingo. They are the ones that make S Voice and their app is pretty much just as capable as S Voice. S Voice is pointless.

    • Citizen Sleeper and Robobeat are free to claim on the Epic Games Store by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe PC gamers have two more games they can add to their library without needing to open their wallets, as the Epic Games Store's freebie offer has just refreshed. That means last week's Warhammer 40K Speed Freeks and The Ouroboros King offer has been replaced by two new games, which happen to be Robobeat and Citizen Sleeper copies. From the duo, Robobeat lands from developer Simon Fredholm, offering a rhythm-based action game. Released only last year, the title puts you into the shoes of Ace, a bounty hunter that's targeting the robot showman Frazzer. The fast-paced title offers movement techniques like wall-running, sliding, and bunny hopping to zoom around while shooting enemies, but the requirement is doing everything to the beat. Outside of built-in tracks, the title also lets players upload their own music to populate its levels too. Next, Citizen Sleeper lands from Jump Over The Age, a sci-fi RPG adventure taking place in a ruined space station where thousands of people are trying to survive. The tabletop RPG-inspired title uses things like dice and clocks to change how the player approaches situations and survives their day-to-day lives. There is a large range of characters to meet with in the station, each with their own storylines and alliances. "You are a sleeper, a digitised human consciousness in an artificial body, owned by a corporation that wants you back," says the developer about the setting. "Thrust amongst the unfamiliar and colourful inhabitants of the Eye, you need to build friendships, earn your keep, and navigate the factions of this strange metropolis, if you hope to survive to see the next cycle." The Citizen Sleeper and Robobeat giveaways are set to run until June 25 on the Epic Games Store, giving PC gamers seven days to claim the latest offer. Once this closes out, new freebies will take its place on the same day. They are supposed to be copies of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and Voidwrought. Don't forget that mobile gamers can check out the Epic Game Store's weekly giveaways on Android and iOS to grab a freebie there as well.

    • The Online part hasn't even been announced and probably won't be included on day one. This is a massive singleplayer game.
    • While I agree with all that, it just proves there's an a** built for every seat.
