Hey Neowin,

so after I found a nice and quiet Graphics Card (MSI 6850 Cyclone) this summer the noise of my CPU fan gets on my nerves, that's why I would like some recommendations as I'm completely clueless about them^^'

My CPU is a AMD Phenom II 955 on a AM3+ socket with a GIGABYTE board and the stock AMD cooler.

Things to consider:

- the price should be around 30-40?

- it doesn't have to cool a whole lot as I don't overclock, a little more silence is all I ask for :p and I currently have no heat problems

- my case is a Aerocool iCuve, 200mm wide with a case fan directly over the CPU so it shouldn't be one of these very high fans

- and that's pure luxury, not a must, it would be nice if I can fit it with the standard AM3 bracket on the mobo so I don't have to remove the board (I never fitted anything but stock AMD fans in my life...)

Thanks for any help in advance! :)

i have ignored your bullet point requests as i want to throw a curveball in there..

i don't really know for euro based shops.. UK noob i guess, but as to cooler for the summer i just recentley purcahsed a Corsair H60 very easy to install. and very quiet compared to stock cooler i had. also nice for a bit of overclocking. running with with a not so extreme overclock 2.4Ghz @2.75Ghz (+350mhz)

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!^^ I was short before buying the Hyper 212+ since I'm a bit... respectful about watercooling though after watching a few installation tutorials of the Hyper 212+ the cooler was not for me, it looked like you need 2-3 people to install it xD I am however noticed the smaller brother of the Hyper 212+ while looking into it, the Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Evo and since it was only 15? I went with that.

And that worked out quite well, I installed it yesterday with little trouble and I run at 35?C idle with 32?C ambient and I can barely notice any noise increase while gaming so mission accomplished I guess and thanks again everyone^^

One question though for all owners with similar fans, I also have 12cm side fans installed in my case and currently one of them is blowing against the top part of the TX3 Evo in low RPM mode (only three pins connected):

I haven't noticed too much difference with it on or off so I wondered if these CPU coolers actually benefit from that or if I can turn it off for less noise.

    • Too soon, I'm still not over this death!
    • Normally, I admit when a title is clickbait (unfortunately, it's become somewhat necessary in AI-dominated news sections today), but in this case, all supported versions is implied and doesn't need to be spelled out in the title. Of course, I'm covering a Patch Tuesday update but that is only available to supported Windows SKUs. All our coverage relates to supported Windows software and SKUs only unless we expressly state that it's "unsupported", "unofficial", or "third-party". I'm sorry, but supported/official SKUs don't need to be spelled out as such in every Neowin headline.
    • ALL versions or ALL SUPPORTED versions? Neowin does it again.
    • But the reality is it will work for people's needs, and they don't care about the technology that makes it. Clearly not everyone's needs, but that low end space where personal laptops were only used to type emails, watch content and browse websites, but they didn't want to do that on a small screen device. Heck, writing that out I can now see the connection and reason it'll do so well. Apple is about experience. If the experience is bad, they don't release it. Low end Windows laptop manufacturers up until this point have not taken that into consideration ever before, so slow laggy usage with brittle slimey plastic shells were common. I hope that the low end space at least creates better physical products that last a bit longer, and if Microsoft get their act together, they could also have a solid OS on such low end hardware that would actually make the experience work for what the hardware was intended for. The fact that the CPU is a "cellphone", sorry mobile phone processor is irrelevant. It's about the experience, and so far, that sounds quite solid.
