I wish people would stop using "Metro" to refer to the start screen

Recommended Posts

Metro = a design aesthetic / philosophy used in Windows Phone, Windows 8, etc.

Metro style apps = a new kind of plugin for explorer.exe in Windows 8

Start screen = the screen with the tiles (you can tell it is the Start screen because it says "Start" in big letters in the upper left)

Metro should've stayed on the phone and not the desktop.

And you should still be using Windows XP, by the sound of it.

There is 0 mechanical difference in pressing the Win key and launching a program in 7 and 8. It just looks different.

I think MS brought this on themselves because really this is now Metro 2.0. The sexy, information dense 1.0 Metro-ness of Zune for example is no where to be found in the information sparse, mobility focused Metro Start/Apps.

Well he's right. Let's face the facts here, Desktop users are going to hate the Startscreen.

I spend most of my time on the desktop using Win CP at the moment, but I actually like the new start screen.

Thats the problem. Its TOO much of a difference for the average user. Those of us who have to deal with the average user (and below average user, for that matter) on a daily basis will be keeping them away from Windows 8 for as long as possible. Some of them couldn't handle Win 7 very well. They won't be able to deal with 8 at all.

And you should still be using Windows XP, by the sound of it.

It is a massive intrusion that breaks my workflow. But I won't re-write that whole mess again for the 400th time...

If users are that stupid so be it, let em stay on win7 forever.

Meanwhile I use a desktop and I love the start screen.

I wouldn't call myself stupid when it comes to computers, yet unless the start screen, and all metro block elements can be removed... I'll be sticking to 7.

The only thing I hate about it, is the "clown barf" colors. Otherwise, I think a fullscreen "Start" area is long overdue. Live tiles complete the package.

    • I'm still rocking iOS 25.x on my primary phone cuz iOS 26 still has usability quirks (mostly aesthetic and thus its UX) which I don't wanna deal with -- and I've been piloting them with all of these updates on my backup phone, so I'm well aware of its "improvements" since iOS 26 was first released (compared to version 26.5.x).
