Hotmail rebranding to Newmail

Recommended Posts

It's current name is Windows Live Hotmail. Windows Live Mail is a crappy desktop app, MS made to replace Outlook Express and Windows Mail

Technically they tried to rebrand Hotmail to Windows Live Mail a few years ago (with @live.com addresses too)... but after much fuss, changed it back to Windows Live Hotmail.

Edit: I saw this in reply to the original article and to be honest... it's not a bad idea!

I also kind of wish they went with Skype as the encompassing brand for communication so Skype IM, Skype Call, Skype Mail

Skype - Communication

Office - Productivity

Bing - Search

Xbox - Media

Windows - Platforms

It's just a codename or w/e, I do get a kick out of people jumping to conclusions though. And fwiw, I get more spam on my gmail account than I do on my hotmail accounts.

As for the newmail name. did anyone read the article and see that it will be offered as a new interface for hotmail, and users can still use the old hotmail. Did anyone stop to think that newMail will simply be the name of the new interface, while they have both of them.

They're not going to rename Hotmail to NewMail, they're probably not going to rename hotmail at all, it's the worlds most popular mail service by far, and last time they tried they got yelled at from everyone, and if they do, it's going to be Microsoft Mail.

What a completely stupid name change...

Rarely do you and I agree on anything, but this is one of those rare times. How many domain names are they going to give it? Hotmail, MSN, Passport, Live, Newmail? All have been (along with some others, I think) domain names you could choose from for your e-mail address from Microsoft. You can't get @passport.com or @msn.com ones anymore, as far as I can tell, but you used to be able to.

Yep, I've still got an @msn.com email address that I use

You don't know much about the origins of the name, do you? It was originally spelled as HoTMaiL (HTML), since it was among the first web-based e-mail services.

This.

I was about to come and make the same comment. The name is far from stupid, and actually makes alot of sense given the service's origins.

vecause passport was closed down, and changed to a microsoft only service for only their own products, and MSN isn't really used anymore.

The Hotmail brand is one of the most well known, well respected and oldest brands on the Internet. I would be very surprised if Microsoft retired the Hotmail trademark.

It was rebranded to Windows Live Mail ages ago, although that was very short lived!

No it wasn't. it was branded live mail, and you can still choose live.*** as your domain. Windows live mail is the desktop client.

    • AMD is supported out of the box in linux because of their open source driver. Nvidia does not. All my systems are amd and all of them work nicely on linux arch without doing anything.
    • Never had a problem with TPM and started using that many years ago in Win10. Through several motherboards and OS versions, it just does what it does without complaint. My games library doesn't even know it's there. Secure boot does a lot more than support anti-cheat, as it came along long before anti-cheat software. I've used it religiously since before I started using TPM, and I always liked it for being able to nullify virus contagions that try their best to come in underneath the firmware during boot, so that the OS doesn't see them, etc. That is its purpose, imo. I'll never understand why people who elect to use another OS feel compelled to run down Windows... I guess they need to do that to feel secure about their choices? I run Windows because it supports all the software (including games) natively that I want to buy, and I've never had to run down another OS to make me feel better about it. (Although it's certainly possible to do that, of course...) Win10 is on a ventilator atm, and Win11 is very close to being free, and I finally got to stop running StartAllBack as I moved to the Experimental/Dev channel and my 26300.8553 build supports the moveable taskbar and it's running fine at the top of the screen! Finally, my last major dislike of Win11 is being rectified! So, I'm not at all surprised to see Win11's share of the Steam survey hitting 70%.
    • I can answer about the Linux bit. I only used AMD GPUs. I currently have a 9060XT (8GB) that fits my needs, I'm not a gamer, so I don't need that much GDDR. But lately, NVIDIA has grown a lot in the recent years. Oh, the horrors of NVIDIA drivers not working. But they have been getting better. I know a lot of members onm here that are running cachyOS and other distros, and are fine with a 4090/5090 variants. Really, though, I would stick with AMD variants.
    • Everything they say you can already do yourself on the registry by changing some things.
    • Artist's renderings are so much nicer to view than the real thing, don't you think?
