Okay first things first - my Tier 2 subscription just expired so I appreciate that most people have probably been living with this for some time now or that there may have been discussions on this already but.... the ads at the top of the pages are taking up almost 1/3rd of the page (see pic)... surely too much? I'm also seeing ads for MatureDatingUK, not very appropriate IMO.

Sorta makes the site seem "cheap" looking with that monstrosity at the top page. If I was a first time visitor and seeing that block at the top I'd run away and never come back.

As was said it only shows up for guests. I've seen these large ones on other sites too though, not just Neowin. That's why i say nobody should ever get a 1366 x 768 or netbook resolutions (1064 x 600) or something, those things must suck!

Doesn't matter.

It looks outright horrible and a site header should NEVER EVER get scooted down that much by other (big) parts of the site.

I'll be honest: if it wasn't for me being a member already, I wouldn't bother coming back after hitting this site for the first time...

To be honest, the news particularly don't really draw me here either, it's mainly the forums and the news coverage that I don't get from my Apple news sites (so general tech news is covered by Neowin :)).

I agree when not logged in they just look wrong.

If I was a new visitor to the site it would be off putting to see a ad take over 1/3 of the screen. Its not just that ad I have seen some other ones over the past couple of months that do the same. Somthing like that must not get many click thru's as its just wrong.

Also we want people not to block ad's on the site but showing ad's like that one just add's to why people use ad blocking plugins in the first place.

I strongly agree, I believe those adds are just too much lol, I thought the same thing the first time I noticed them, If I'm a new visitor and see that, I probably stay away from the site, makes it look like one of those maleware sites.

I'm usually for any change this sites makes, but that ad is abhorrent, even if it is for guests only. There absolutely must be a better way to supply ads for guests! Using the picture InsaneNutter uses, why not place an ad between the "Neogamr" and "Login" buttons, and perhaps an ad tile instead of one of the news tiles? This, so far, is the equivalent of walking into a shop that's hard to get to the entrance.

Considering tablets + 1366x768 Laptops/Ultrabooks/Netbooks are very quickly becoming the standard, having it take up so much space they literally can't see any of the latest news without having to scroll down, it leaves an instantly negative taste in the user's mouth. To take a line from retail merchandising, "The eye line is the buy line". Now, quite obviously this isn't a retail store (this is a news website), but the philosophy still stands. A guest should be greeted instantly with eye-catching news tiles and headlines, as well as eye-catching ads, both of which entice a click. The way this works right now, this massive ad does not entice any sort of hover over, never mind a mouse click, and in some people's cases there aren't even any instantly available to news stories to click, enticing or otherwise!

I absolutely love the work the Neowin team puts in and so far have always said that such work deserves an applause, but on this exception I think this needs to be reviewed by the dev team - I hope the Neowin team agrees :)

Hey guys I would love to hear your feedback on how we can improve the experience at Neowin but the fact is we offset the bigger ads to guests because there are always 1000's more of them on Neowin all the time. Max member count at any one time never reaches past 300.

So instead of bitching about the ads you don't see when you're logged in, how about some suggestions to turn those guests into members? I don't really understand why our member to guest ratio is so extreme myself?

Remember we pay developers, newsposters, our own hosting, two full time staff from that income, and our advertisers are pretty much requiring these types.. and lastly guests won't always see the big ad, as it should only display once or twice in a 24 hour timeframe. I never see them in Europe when I check the site logged out as well.

I appreciate meaningful feedback.

First idea, make smaller ads? If I was a guest to a site that had huge ads like that, I wouldn't join. Guests aren't to know if they will be bombarded by more massive annoying ads when they login. I'm not bitching either, because it's your site, so you can run it however you like.

Are they actual guests? On a forum I run, I see a huge amount of bots. Be that spiders or spammers.

chrome + adblock = Happy

I'm pretty sure this is against the rules.

But seriously, if you use and enjoy a site, and don't pay a feww to remove them, don't you feel it's right to give them the opportunity to show ads to make some money back to provide your free website? Neowin doesn't exactly intrude with their ads. Unless you're a guest.

This. The ads I get on my tablet when I switch browsers make me want to kill people :\

It does really take away from Neowin. The other thing I would do is run an article explaining the benefits of registering or subscribing. I'd have registered just for the "Thread formerly known as" thread.

Actually doing so isn't, but talking about it is.

I have Neowin on my whitelist for background loading. I never see the adds, but my browser loads them and Neowin should get the "impressions" benefits from me >.<

I've been thinking of writing an auto-clicker to use for the site, but I don't want to get Neowin in trouble :\

    • iPhone 18 Pro drop-test video and photos leak on the dark web following a data breach by Hamid Ganji iPhone 17 Pro - Image via Apple Apple is seemingly facing one of the biggest data breaches in its history, and just a few months before the official debut of the iPhone 18 Pro series, photos, a drop-test video, a supplier list, and key phone components have reportedly been leaked by hackers. Last week, we reported that Tata Electronics, an Apple supplier and iPhone producer in India, was hit by a data breach. As a result, it was reported that more than 200,000 trade secrets and confidential documents belonging to Apple and Tesla were stolen by the ransomware group World Leaks. According to Reuters, the group has now leaked supplier lists, component details, and photos of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models on the dark web. One of the materials leaked by the hackers is a drop-test video of the iPhone 18 Pro, which is due to launch this September. The phone is shown in a gray color and has the same familiar design we saw on last year's iPhone 17 Pro series. The device also appears to be quite durable, though it seems to be thicker than last year's model. One possible explanation is that Apple may be using a larger battery in the iPhone 18 Pro series. Moreover, Reuters says it has seen at least six documents mapping many components in the iPhone 18 Pro models to their respective suppliers, including details on chips on the main circuit board and on battery and camera components. The documents reportedly detail hundreds of parts that will be used in the iPhone 18 Pro models. A person familiar with the matter told the outlet that Apple classifies this data as sensitive and “is concerned about the documents being shared on the dark web as they relate to unreleased models.” Apple is reportedly investigating the issue but has yet to issue an official statement.
    • You do you, I've just said that it first appeared in "home" version before it will be available in "work" one. I use Edge only because it still supports MV2 uBO extension even on Android - I'll switch when they stop.
    • I imagine that was a review or something? My reviews mostly contain a lot of images and galleries, but these are all webp too, but yeah it all adds up on the page load. Would help if you were more helpful with your critique instead of bitching and moaning like a Karen 😂 Because then we might be able to fix it for you.
    • If Valve refused to let them make the case, I wonder if they've already partnered with someone else to do it? The fact that they didn't seek permission/licence before diving straight in is incredible though
