WASHINGTON ? A strong storm system across the eastern United States caused five fatalities and wiped out power to more than 2 million people.

There were four reported deaths in Virginia, including a 90-year-old woman asleep in bed when a tree slammed into her home, a police spokeswoman said Saturday. Another man was killed by a falling tree while watching the storm from his deck and a woman died after she, too, was hit by a falling tree after she got out of her car to observe a downed tree. Both those deaths occurred in Albermarle County, Va. A fallen tree also killed a man driving in Maryland.

In addition, a park police officer was injured by an uprooted tree in the northern Virginia county, and an 18-year-old man was struck by a power line, Jennings said. He was in stable condition after receiving CPR, she said.

Widespread power outages were reported from Indiana to New Jersey, with the bulk of the service interruptions concentrated on Washington, D.C., and the surrounding areas. Earlier Friday, the nation's capital reached 104 degrees -- topping a record of 101 set in 1934.

More than 20 elderly residents at an apartment home in Indianapolis were displaced when the facility lost power due to a downed tree. Most were bused to a Red Cross facility to spend the night, and others who depend on oxygen assistance were given other accommodations, the fire department said.

Same has just happened here in the UK, homes and vehicles all over the country were flooded and destroyed 2 days ago

We got heavy rain and thunder but nothing like a lot of other places got, apparently half of July's rain fell in 20-60 minutes

WTF? Darwin award winners?

Crazy weather. I checked in with my friends and they were all ok but yikes. Can't imagine what it would be like now with no power plus hot as hell! (well i sorta can, had blackout/brownouts a few years ago when I was there, went to 100+ degrees and blew transformers all over!)

We just had a tropical storm last week that brought massive amounts of water very quickly here! I saw streets flooded, and creeks that looked like rivers! I was fortunate not to be affected by any of the water, being that the apartments we live in have a slightly higher elevation, and we have a retention pond on site, plus we are surrounded on the back side by a massive DOT retention pond. But there was quite a bit of damage in the city caused by the storm, so I can totally relate to the people north of us now!

2/3 of Ohio was without power today.

Yup, fortunately this time around my area was one of the "quicker" ones to get restored, maybe 36 hours down.. at least not as bad as it was in 2008, down about a week.. that sucked.

reporting live and more keep coming....power still out here everyone stay tuned here for updates..

Saw your posts on Accuweather.com :p - You in NC right?

Hope everyone gets some power back soon because it's too hot to be without even a fan or some type of cooling!

When you folks without power hit 20+ days let me know... We went 20+ days with no power/water in freakin' boiling heat back when Ivan hit. Having to race to gas stations after the radio said places had a tanker come in was not fun at all LOL.

power still down where i'm at hope it's back today it's crazy hot.... im at a library so i can charge phone and be in a cooler spot.... also to use thier compies for a while....

I miss my compie so much!!!!!

we also are gonna save up for a solar power system my hubby's stepdad says we can get a hold of a system for 2000USD and add that to our house... it would increse the value and we dont have to worry about power outages.... he will also help install it for us as well! he goes to seminars for this stuff so he could also find us a cheap suppiler and hook us up with some gear as well!

I don't want any rain interferring with the power crews we need our power back... there are still 2000 in my "city" without power and a lot of them are old people that are vulnerable and we also have a neighbor that's son has asthma and other problems.... i cant sleep at night it's too hot and hard to breathe i wake up and my heart is beating so hard and i cant breathe and go into sweats.... ive been only getting 3-4 hrs of sleep all this time a night....

not as far as I know..... me, and like 5 other neighbors have been calling the power company for 4 days now.... one has been calling a lot cuz her kid has asthma attacks... she's almost out of money too.... she has to keep deciding weather she should get a hotel or get gas for the generator.... and she lost over 500 dollars worth of food as well... I lost about 350 and another neighbor lost like 700. this sucks so baaaad..... :-((((

I've had a rough week..... so has this entire area.... :-((( hope we can pick back up again soon....
