the only way to easily do that you've specified is to install a codec pack. I recommend CCCP Codec Pack. It is pretty much the best choice. I've had no issues with it.

Also I advise you to stay away from K-lite. it has damaged a lot of windows installs by mucking with codecs and causing tons of performance issues.

i want to use A codec, not a codec pack :) thats whay i asked 4....

i am sorry for not explaining well

FalsePositive - thank u

SickDave - i am srry u were the ony one that did not understand

rosszone - i am sorry but most codec packs are not safe with windwos 7 bc windows 7 includes a lo tof default codec that work great out of the box (except mkv)

jnelsoninjax - i mentioned i did not want codec packs :)

+Phouchg - thank u

CactuzJak - i never said such a thing

Javik - i did not say that

+remixedcat - again no codec packs.

thank u to all who have tried to help me i will try falsepositive's advice and if that does not work phouchg. thank u again

your not going to get the result you want from a single codec as WMP doesn't have the functionality to fully work correctly with MKV so if you have a file with dual-audio or dual-subs you won't be able to switch between them without the manager from a codec PACK

i recommend if you want to keep it small just install the basic K Lite pack

You need DivX plus for Windows (that preview link is old). While installing, just select the MKV splitter/codec option.

I had issues with the divix pack, audio wouldn't play at all for mkv files, K Lite worked much better for me, so that is what i recommend

Shark007 has an excellent codec pack that works with WMP

+1

You have no idea what you're talking about. I am using Shark007's codec packs with Windows 7, as I did with Vista, and guess what, no problems at all. And, I am a very advanced Windows user!

MPC-HC is the best, looks a lot like Windows Media Player 6.4, but includes internal codecs and splitters for most stuff, with the option of using External codecs/splitters if you want..

BUT you want WMP12, so..

As others suggested, the DivX has support for MKV [ btw.. MKV support --> MKV requires a splitter, not a codec.. ], you could also use Haali Splitter, and I think there are a few others.. but the DivX one also gives you thumbnails in Windows 7, which is awesome..

Codecs wise, you should already have a H264 decoder, so after that it depends on what Audio you are seeing in your MKV Files.. AC3 [ Dolby Digital ], DTS, FLAC, AAC would be the big ones.. I like AC3Filter for AC3 and DTS.. I think Windows comes with AAC support, and FLAC there are severial simple codecs out there for it.

Likewise, Shark's codec pack has always worked flawlessly for me.

    • This is listed as a preview in WU for me. I usually don't grab them as previews; what's your opinion on it so far?

    • Onwards to Windows 12 then lol.
    • There is a long thread (128pgs and counting) that I've been following over at ElevenForums that has a method for updating Secure Boot even if there is no BIOS upgrade. I've used this method and had zero issues. NOTE:  I do not take any responsibility if this or any other Secure Boot method bricks your system -- YMMV!  Read carefully before using!
