linux install question

Recommended Posts

i am wanting to try linux, but i will probally not really use it for anything, just messing with. however i dont really want a boot menu, as i will mostly be using windows ind i dont really want to a) slow down my boot b) mess with the mbr

is their another way??

my friend said it would be possible to use a linux boot disk to start linux

this would be good as the amount i will be using it puting in a disk will be worth the hassel

so i just install linux as normal, make boot disk during the install, and skip the mbr/lilo bit

and then when i want to use linux i just have to put the disk in and boot up and it will work??

Yes, that will work fine just skip the lilo/grub install and just make a boot disk and you'll be fine, also you can use the NT bootloader to to run linux off of. it's a little complex but if you want to know how i'll show you.

The LILO is only recommended if you use Linux often. But in your case, the boot disk would do. Also, you can install Linux first and then install Windows. That way, the LILO is wiped out.
