This isn't a left / right political issue, so don't try to make it one.

Thank you.

Even without opening this or other related threads on Neowin yesterday, but was reading the Twitter storify on NBC's mistakes and I knew at least someone on here would bring up politics

Still disappointing and disrespectful, with regards to the OP.

Must be sad to live with all that hate in your heart.

must be sad to walk around thinking everyone is hate filled simply when they think American's are self-centered.Perhaps look into your own heart before you profess to know what someone else has.

Care to link to that study, survey, etc? Or do you claim to personally know all 300 million + Americans?

Sometimes the anti-American sentiment around here is mind blowing. As an American who has literally travelled around the world (except for the central section of Africa between Nigeria and Bahrain), I've never experienced this supposed global hatred of Americans as much as I do here, primarily it seems from people from Europe. I think a lot of people in other countries forget the diversity of the American people, and just how large and populous our country is. Just because you see some outspoken idiots on TV doesn't mean that they in any way represent the "overwelming majority of Americans".

rofl... of course you can say that 'not all' are self-centered, so spare that argument, but the majority... yeah.

You can bing any number of random studies, papers, etc on the subject of American self-centrism and how they only care about themselves and what impacts them. It is invasive and entertwined in all areas of the country.

Gallup good enough for a start? http://m1043.sgded.c...tered-than-ever, or this one, http://www.newser.co...ong-lyrics.html followed by the follow-up http://www.selfgrowt...and-more-lonelym or a paper here, http://activecitizen.tufts.edu/wp-content/uploads/pressrelease.pdf

In my experience as someone from the UK there is quite a lot of anti-American sentiment and I share in some of that. However, it is recognised that people are individuals and if they behave in a decent and respectful manner then the same is reciprocated. I have met many Americans who are very enlightened and understanding of their political problems and have a decent understanding of world politics; it is very interesting talking to such people. However, I have also come across a lot of arrogant and disrespectful Americans - much more than any other individual country - and such behaviour is especially common online.

People aren't hated for being Americans; they are hated for displaying the negative traits associated with the US.

You mean because a "KNOWN" left leaning broadcasting corporation doesn't show the 7/7 massacre, we are all Bad Americans? I didn't even get to see it myself and never would've thought I missed it. But as an American, I take it quite personally when someone wants to lump us into one basket.

Again, it's not about left or right leaning networks. If it was any other network the same sort of commercial and nationalistic prioritisation would have occurred. It is indicative of the culture of the US - a culture that puts commercial interests and national pride above journalistic integrity and respect. Just look at China - I have a friend there and he informed me that they showed live coverage of the London Olympics 2012 opening ceremony, didn't talk over it and it was shown in its entirety - and that's despite it being an unfavourable time due to the time difference (there it would have been early morning). Yet when it comes to the US it's all about money and cultural / political influence. It's endemic of US culture. There is no denying that many Americans object to such behaviour but can you name one other country that did the same thing? The reality is that US culture tolerates such behaviour.

I think your comment only serves to epitomise American arrogance. When I see coverage of British football hooligans or binge drinkers causing trouble abroad I don't seek to castigate those who criticise such behaviour or highlight it as a negative aspect of British culture but am instead embarrassed by such behaviour and accept that British culture has many undesirable qualities - it is certainly not my opinion that British culture should be embraced and respected throughout the rest of the world. I am truly embarrassed and ashamed of British foreign policy and the behaviour of many British people, even though I do take pride in some British traits.

Gawker -

Yesterday, NBC spokesman Greg Hughes offered only this: "Our programming is tailored for the U.S. audience. It's a tribute to [producer] Danny Boyle that it required so little editing."

It's a remarkably tone-deaf response that seems to suggest American audiences would not be interested in the tribute. While many have said the segment specifically honored victims of the British terror attacks on 7/7, it was also a "wall of remembrance for those no longer here to share in the event."

And even if the focus were limited to the U.K. act of terrorism, which claimed 52 lives in 2005, could the tribute really be deemed irrelevant for not highlighting an American tragedy?

That may not have been NBC's intention, but without a more thorough explanation, it doesn't look good. USA Today suggests that NBC "didn't see lingering on that as helping its overall marketing effort." That's only slightly less offensive than the conclusion Daily Kos draws, as articulated in this analogy:

Can you imagine the BBC opting to cut out a tribute to 9-11 at a future Olympics held in the States because it wasn't "tailored for a UK audience"? If that happened, suffice to say the switchboards at BBC Broadcasting House would have blown a fuse.

You know all the hate should be directed at NBC and not towards the people of U.S.A, NBC wouldn't let Bob Costas do a moment for silence the slain Israeli athletes in Munich 72, during his broadcast of opening ceremony. If the U.S.A are self centered why do they do give more money to charities and do more for other countries than any other country does around the world each year?

Agreed. The US Media is often self centred and everything else that has been said. But using that stereotype for the US as a whole is totally stupid.

wrong. epitome? Since you didn't care to read my post I'll "reiterate" what I said before.. 1. I would have liked to have seen the tribute to 7/7 as innocent people lost their lives like in the US. 2. Don't lump all americans into the quote, un-quote same basket.

that just serves to prove YOUR lack of understanding and your pompous attitude to all Americans. Plus read the italics highlighted and bolded above. you say you have american friends but have anti-american sentiments. you either hate americans or not, that's about as crazy as a woman saying she's "kind of pregnant."

besides, my prior post was anti NBC a national or nationwide network to blame not me or other americans

I would love to see what charities and if thats per capita, show me some data.

charities per capita a quick google search will give you the answer. America PER CAPITA gives more than any other nation as it should we are one of the richest.

I did not get the same understanding from reading his post. He said he knows americans that are good and crap. How is that lack of understanding if he has first hand experience with both. But there are good and bad in every country. And yes he can not like some thing americans do an like some things at the same time. I love my wife but i hate when she acts like a bitch.

Agreed. The US Media is often self centered and everything else that has been said. But using that stereotype for the US as a whole is totally stupid.

People overseas in other countries only have the media and movies to know how americans act. Example. A few friends I have in Thailand think European men are nicer than american men. It is just their experience and they lump all americans into that now.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard, movies are meant for entertainment purpose only and you can't judge a countries people from a movie sinceit's all scripted.

It's the truth and a fairly good point I made to counter some of the argument in this thread and it shows how truly ignorant some of you really are as

moloko post proves it.

I think you're getting off-topic.

You post was never on topic and your trying to complain about my post! this thread has been way off topic way before my post kthxbye.

People overseas in other countries only have the media and movies to know how americans act.

Really? So no one from another country has ever actually met any Americans? They never have any interaction with them outside what they see in the media? Do you realize how stupid that statement sounds? If I wanted to know how British men act, should I watch Benny Hill and Mr. Bean? Should I base my opinions of Australians off of Crocodile Dundee? Most American media (TV shows in particular) focus on just a few major cities (New York and Los Angeles in particular) as well, which are hardly representative of the entire country. That would be like thinking that all Europeans were like the residents of Paris or London.

And even basing a view of all Americans on what you've seen from a few tourists is just as dumb. That would be like basing my view of all Europeans on the actions of some of the ones I've met while working front desk at a hotel.

charities per capita a quick google search will give you the answer. America PER CAPITA gives more than any other nation as it should we are one of the richest.

Well let me put it another way. we have more money and higher income so we do rank high on total money amount. But, its not because the average American is considerate of their fellow man. On the contrary, Only 60% of the US population donates to charity ranking us in 18th place as of 2010. Malta leads the pack coming in at 83% and those 73% of people from the UK donate to charity. Reminds me of when Jesus said the widow gave the most tithe when mathematically, the pharisees did.....

NBC is horrendous in just about every way. But please, do not judge the nation on the choices of a broadcaster. We don't judge Brits by Mr. Bean, after all.

Mr. Bean is beloved by millions worldwide and extremely popular. He's brilliant.

I don't want to play the Devil advocate but Neowin is a little bit special you know (well the whole online world is pretty much an alternate universe).

I've read things here from Americans that you can't really read or hear in the real world on a regular basis (of course there's idiots everywhere). So of course you gonna get answers from people outside USA that you wont get anywhere else from normal people around the world.

I wont go into detail as i don't want to derail this thread. But often i've been shocked by what i can read online from Americans (and from people outside too of course). It's definitely different than my experience when i go visit my family in Vermont or Florida (I would say 20% of my family lives in USA. Some of them don't even speak french or barely. My dad worked there for a while as most of my uncles).

I don't think it's really an anti-american sentiment. It's more like replies (often stupid) to stupid comments you can read here but will not read or hear from normal americans when you visit USA.

You know the web is the web. If idiots online could fly .....

Thank you.

It is unfortunate, but that's NBC. They do this with any tragedy that they can't spin into a liberal imperative. Certainly any atrocity linked to islamic extremism doesn't get airtime on their network.

Mr. Bean is beloved by millions worldwide and extremely popular. He's brilliant.

Correction: Rowan Atkinson is brilliant, Mr. Bean is an idiot (but damned funny because of it). My kids watch the cartoons on a daily basis.

It's bad enough that it wasn't broadcast live but to then fail to identify people like Tim Berners-Lee was pathetic, a move that struck me as very deliberate considering that the US likes to claim ownership of the internet at every opportunity (yes, I'm aware of the distinction between "the internet" and the "world wide web").

Failed to identify people like Tim Berners-Lee? Did you watch the broadcast? They called him out by name at least twice and even pointed out that he invented the world wide web. What more do you want?

Actually Meredith Vieira basically said his name, then something to the effect of "You probably dont know who Tim Berners-Lee is, but thats ok, neither do I!"

Ridiculous...

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • The fact that memory in general is so high I have to take a loan out to build a computer now is just beyond stupid. Who's really to blame here? Low supply or high demand?
    • Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) 18.1.5.5 by Razvan Serea Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a utility for completely removing AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL graphics drivers and related packages from your system, attempting to eliminate all leftovers (including registry entries, folders and files, driver store). Though AMD/NVIDIA/INTEL drivers can usually be removed via the Windows Control Panel, this uninstaller tool was created for situations where standard uninstall fails, or when you need to fully remove NVIDIA or ATI graphics card drivers. After using this driver cleaner, your system will behave as though it’s the first time you’re installing a new driver—similar to a fresh Windows installation. As with all such tools, we recommend creating a restore point beforehand, allowing you to undo changes if issues arise. If you're having trouble installing an older or newer driver, try it—there are reports that it resolves such problems. Recommended usage: The tool can be used in Normal mode but for absolute stability when using DDU, Safemode is always the best. Make a backup or a system restore (but it should normally be pretty safe). It is best to exclude the DDU folder completely from any security software to avoid issues. You do NOT need to uninstall the driver prior using DDU. Requirements: .NET Framework 4.8 Compatible with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, and 11 (32-bit or 64-bit) Note: Using on Insider Preview builds is at your own risk.
