SPRINGFIELD ? The School Department will be contacting parents by letter and by telephone during the next two weeks to provide details of a new program that allows students ages 12 and older to have access to condoms.

The notice will stress that parents and guardians have the right to ?opt out,? by signing a form if they do not want their children to have access to the program.

The access to condoms under the new ?Comprehensive Reproductive Health Policy,? was approved by the School Committee in April by a 4-3 vote, with the aim of reducing teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted illnesses.

Letters and opt-out forms will be mailed before school starts, just targeting the affected families of middle school and high school students, ages 12 and older. The opt out forms can be returned by mail or in person, or written notice can be provided any time during the year, according to the policy.

In addition, parents will be contacted by the Connect-Ed telephone system before school starts, with basic information about the new program, officials said.

Under the program that takes effect Sept. 1, condoms will be available for eligible students from school nurses at the middle schools and high schools and the school-based health clinics.

?School nurses will educate eligible students on abstinence, faithfulness, STI/HIV, pregnancy, and storage and usage of condoms,? the policy states. ?Eligible students will be able to ask questions which will be answered factually and in an age-appropriate manner.?

Ya because if the kid doesn't have condoms, he won't have sex..

It's also while teenage pregnancy is so rare in bible belt..

Give the kids access, either they won't need them, they won't use them, or they will use them and be safer in the process.

The notice will stress that parents and guardians have the right to ?opt out,? by signing a form if they do not want their children to have access to the program.

That's incredibly short-sighted, but least it should give enough evidence that there is a strong correlation between teen pregnancy/STDs and education/access to contraception.

I'm no expert, but I think more than the issue of 12-13 year old kids using condoms but the education (or however you want to call it) that kids that age are having sex. I think there's an age for things. Heck even if they were 15. Yeah sure I'm aware there are tons of pregnant teens, but that's not an excuse.

Needless to say, I think the school acted intelligent (or somewhat) , they gave a solution, it's up to the parents to take it or leave it. If parents don't care, then well it's up to them.

There's a very strong correlation between teenage pregnancy and abstinence education.

Might as well drill safe sex into their minds from an early age. Biology is inherently driven to reproduce as early as is safely possible to maximize the number of offspring. The idea that we can overcome the single strongest drive in biology post-maturation in any form is rather arrogant.

Maybe it should be up to the parents to educate them, and to help them choose protection.

It should be, but most times people don't talk to their parents about sex, and the parents dont talk to the children about it either. So their best option is to do it where they actually get educated.

I agree parent should choose the way their kids are educated about sex, but really, what is so dangerous about having an honest, biologically accurate discussion in class about sex, and how to avoid disease and pregnancy?

It not a coincidence that abstinence only schools/states have high rates of STDs and teen pregnancy.

I don't see the problem myself but you know some parents.

I wasn't so safe in my early teens up to young Adult. I banged a few girls and only got scared of pregnacy once. Just lucky. Oh yeah this was before condoms were needed so no disease. (I kid about the before needed part)

    • This makes me think of Dune for some reason.
    • I'm too old to return to the "good old days" when I was installing custom ROMs and tinkering with my devices - now I just want to turn it on and use it. I've read that banking and payment apps work on Murena /e/OS (I'll have to check the ones I use) and I also really want to support Fairphone 😉

    • NVIDIA announces 35 new AI HPC supercomputers across Europe by Fiza Ali NVIDIA has announced that 35 AI high-performance computing (HPC) supercomputers are planned to open throughout Europe this year. This marks what the company describes as the largest single-year expansion of AI infrastructure in the history of the continent. These new systems, unveiled at ISC High Performance 2026, will be placed at a number of national supercomputing centres, AI factories, and research institutes to provide advanced computing resources to more than three million researchers. Describing AI, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang stated, "AI is the new instrument of science, and Europe is building the infrastructure to put it in the hands of millions of researchers." Built on NVIDIA's Blackwell and Hopper architectures, the new systems will support research in climate science, healthcare, clean energy, quantum computing, and other scientific fields. Among the major projects are the Barcelona Supercomputing Center's MareNostrum 5 AI upgrade, BavariaAI's Blue Swan platform in Germany, Italy's IT4LIA AI factory, Germany's HammerHAI project, and Sweden's Mimer AI Factory. The Barcelona Supercomputing Center plans to expand MareNostrum 5 with NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 and GB200 NVL4 systems. In total, the BSC expects to deliver up to 20 exaflops of AI training performance and 33 exaflops of AI inference performance. This increased computational capability will support research efforts related to climate modelling, biotechnology, energy systems, etc. Furthermore, as part of the IT4LIA project, more than 8,000 GPUs, each based on NVIDIA’s GB200 NVL4 architecture, will be used in Italy. This represents one of the largest AI factory initiatives announced to date. Additionally, the Blue Swan platform from BavariaAI will include about 1,000 GPUs to help develop multimodal AI models for use in the medical field, robotics, and various areas of scientific research. NVIDIA also emphasized in the announcement how rapidly growth of accelerated computing usage is taking place within both energy and climate-related research. The company said Siemens Energy uses NVIDIA-powered technologies to significantly accelerate the process of designing and simulating hydrogen-capable gas turbines. Using those same acceleration technologies, Siemens was able to reduce simulation time by up to 77 percent. The company also highlighted several quantum computing initiatives across Europe. CINECA, EuroHPC, and Pasqal are integrating a quantum processing unit into Italy's CINECA supercomputing centre using NVIDIA's CUDA-Q platform. Meanwhile, researchers at Germany's Julich Supercomputing Centre recently simulated a universal 50-qubit quantum computer on the JUPITER supercomputer. The announcement demonstrates Europe's continued commitment to building out its infrastructure supporting AI and supercomputing as governments, research organizations, and technology companies compete to build out their respective computing capacities and secure their positions in advanced scientific research.
