Pet cats are turning feral and growing to more than 4ft in the wild, a British professor has claimed.

Stephen Harris, professor of environmental sciences at Bristol University, said that since wolves and other large animals had become extinct in the UK, a gap had opened for a large predator.

He believes the niche could be being filled by previously domesticated cats which have turned feral and grown to large sizes.

It may explain sightings of the so-called Essex lion which was apparently spotted in Clacton-on-sea over the weekend.

While lions, leopards and pumas are unlikely to be found on the prowl in Britain, a number of pet cats turned feral could be causing the confusion, claims Professor Harris.

The domestic animals can be as long as 4ft from nose to tip of tail in Britain and Mr Harris claimed he had seen domestic cats growing to more than 5ft in Australia.

Prof Harris, said: ?There are no leopards or pumas out there but we do have a population of feral cats ? domestic cats that have gone wild ? and some of them are getting surprisingly large.

?They?re living by themselves, no-one is responsible for them.?

Unlike in Australia, where the animals are considered to be pests and are shot dead and measured, here their size tends to be assessed less scientifically, by comparing them to the background they are spotted against, he said.

?I don?t think these pose a threat to anyone,? Prof Harris told Radio 4?s Today programme.

But he suggested they could fill the gap vacated by wolves in this country as there are no longer any big predators roaming in the wild here.

His comments came after residents and holidaymakers reported seeing what they took to be an escaped lion on the loose in the tiny Essex village of St Osyth over the weekend.

The beast was spotted in a field on Sunday and captured in grainy mobile phone footage, which left most people none the wiser as to its identity.

The claims sparked a major police operation and panic among locals.

But by yesterday the ?lion? had been downgraded to a large domestic cat, possibly called Tom or Teddy Bear.

It is believed a pet sparked the scare and a list of possible candidates was being compiled.

Cats filling a gap left by Wolves? Yea I can totally see a pack of cats taking down a Deer...... :rofl:

Deer might weight up to 200 lbs the average doe around 150 lbs, cats can easily kill animals up to 4 times their weight. In other words, a large cat could easily take down a small to medium sized deer. Don't underestimate 4 claws and a sharp set of fangs.

We do not shoot feral cats dead in Australia, they are caught be non-lethal means, checked to see if they are microchipped if there is no collar (might be someone's lost pet), checked by a vet, if they are indeed feral and not in good health, they will be put down by lethal injection. If they are good health they will be put up for adoption. If they don't get adopted they are put down by lethal injection also.

      Carol, Windows XP is still being used today only in a small capacity. It is still the best OS there is due to its backwards compatibility with other older software, the customization features, and friendly UI, and people often feel that upgrading to newer OSes is cost prohibitive in specialized Industries or developing countries, so the market share as of now is around 0.2%-0.3%

      If I could, I would commemorate it the best way possible: Replacing old machines that are still running Windows XP with something more modern, stable and better.     Noone and nothing should be running Windows XP in 2026.

So, besides solving puzzles and reading distorted text, you can now use your computer’s camera to pass the verification test. When the hand gesture verification is triggered, your browser asks for camera access and prompts you to perform a simple gesture, like a wave or an open palm. Google says it records a short video of the movement and uses AI to extract 21 hand-knuckle coordinates to complete the verification process. The video is then immediately deleted, and Google swears it doesn't keep it. The process alone can be uncomfortable for people who wouldn’t want their biometric data, which hand scans technically qualify as, recorded. But it gets even more nuanced, as early testers discovered that the new hand-waving reCAPTCHA can be passed with a simple stock image. A user on X tested the new challenge using a stock image of a hand fed through OBS Virtual Camera, and it passed. I wanted to verify it, so I tried the same thing. It took me a few tries and a few stock images, but in the end, I was also able to pass the test. I simply had to readjust the stock image of a generic person waving inside OBS, and Google’s mechanism registered it as a legitimate hand gesture. Once again, it didn’t even have to be a video or an AI-generated hand animation. Given the simplicity of the process, the entire action can be automated in minutes. All it takes is a simple Python script to render the new reCAPTCHA method obsolete. And it doesn’t even have to be an AI bot, which is usually used for solving puzzles and other verification methods. The new reCAPTCHA method is still in its early phase, and Google will, hopefully, update its AI to at least reject still images. However, this incident, combined with users’ initial skepticism about Google’s practices regarding user data, likely won’t make too many people wave at the camera anytime soon.
