LOL even a dead OS has more market than Windows Phones. Yes, sure Samsung will be leaving the Android market to be an exclusive Windows Phone supplier. That makes as much sense as this:

<snip>

But it does make sense ditching Android for WP though. Sure Android is VERY profitable, however, what good are those profits if Apple keeps trying to take it off them? the current court victory for Apple is only the beginning, with Apple already getting ready to take Samsung through the courts again. Even if Samsung defeat Apple this time, the legal costs for Samsung must still be costly for them. Apple have the finances to just keep taking Samsung to the courts till they [samsung] run out of money, so moving away from Android is their only sure fire way of getting out of the sights of Apple. Sure going cold turkey and dropping Android completely at once makes no sense, but I think we'll start seeing a bigger focus on WP going forward with them slowing phasing out Android devices. This is purely my opinion so take with a grain of salt.

EDIT: WP might still be a unproven competitor but it's backed by Microsoft, even Apple are not that stupid to go head to head with the big M. Samsung are safer under MS's wing then under Google's, however, that *could* soon change depending on how the talks between Google and Apple turn out (and the possible legal battles).

WMPoweruser - enough said. There's a snowball's chance in hell of getting accurate and unbiased information from that site. Of course the fanboys writing for WMPoweruser (Windows mobile? I thought it was phone now :p) want that to be the case, unfortunately, the reality is Samsung makes most of their money from Android, and even if they were to switch completely to WP, Apple would still sue them if they sold a lot of phones and hit Apple's bottom line. Remember, Apple is suing every company that's moderately successful in the mobile space, including HTC and Samsung. A cross licensing agreement won't stop Apple's lawsuit campaign, and besides, it's up for renewal in the near future.

As Xerxes said, it makes sense for Samsung to diversify their product range further and ease their reliance on Android. Between paying license fees to Microsoft for Android and now Apple Android is becoming more expensive and less of a safe bet. WP also saves Samsung the hassle and expense of having to develop a whole new skin to overcome the UI shortcomings of Android.

Okay, let's compare the titles alone from the articles shall we? CNet: Samsung carriers to modify infringing devices report says. And WMPowerUser: Samsung partnering with microsoft to cut its dependency on google android. The Microsoft fanboyism is strong in that site lol.

Supporting WP more doesn't mean they have to completely ditch Android, I don't know where you guys come up with that idea. And Bada is dead, it's outdated, it sold better because samsung slaps it on it's budget feature phones and those still make a good chunk of the mobile market. Where do you guys think those 9+million symbian phones go? They're low end feature phones given out for free on prepaid programs. This isn't so hard to understand, but I guess it's easy to just say "durr bada sells more than WP, lolz lolz".

The fact Samsung has made the choice to ditch it's old feature phone OS, and put more behind Windows 8 and WP8 says enough. You might not like the new brand name, Ativ, but they're putting a whole product range behind it and are going to spend way more then they ever did on the WP7.x devices to market them.

The title is irrelevant and the focus on WP is to be expected from a website that focuses on WP. What matters is that the content of the article is based on an aspect of an article from CNet that is relevant to their readers. Whether they are fanboys or not is completely irrelevant as they are simply reporting on a claim that Samsung intend to rely more heavily on WP. You're trying to argue that the content of their article is made up when the reality is that it isn't.

You're an Android fanboy - should I just dismiss everything you have to say as a result?

What Samsung will have to pay Apple is purely Samsung's fault. Samsung were the one's who decided to take Android, slap an iPhone clone UI over the top of it and sell it. If they'd have used a different UI (a la HTC Sense), or for Android 4.0+ stuck with the default UI, there'd be no problem here. Android isn't the thing that got them sued, Touchwiz was, and that's why Google didn't step in and help.

The news here is really overstated, it's simply that Samsung (like many other manufacturers) aren't betting it all on Android, and appealing to more sectors of their target market. It's smart business, unlike a certain cash-haemorrhaging Finnish company which shall remain nameless.

Let's not pretend any of us actually know whether said Finnish company would have done any better with Android.

MS and Apple are in bed together anyway, so if Samsung gets in bed with them it will benefit Apple too, and further 'kill' android, as Samsung and HTC are the 2 biggest adopters of the OS. Samsung should buy Blackberry, and adapt that OS to work in 'modern times'

I am very surprised that Apple left the jailbreak hole open for so long too, I would have thought 5.1.2 to be released to address the worm in mere weeks. It was revealed May 25th, and still valid, over 3 months and another to go. Is this helping their quarterly profits that much??

Let's not pretend any of us actually know whether said Finnish company would have done any better with Android.

Oh don't get me wrong I don't claim to think so either, their problems were deep rooted long before their current mess. Hedging on multiple OS's (like HTC and Samsung) would certainly have been safer IMO, even if just to stay competitive while they return to profit. All that said, it may pay off for them but it's still a gamble.

I own a Lumia 900 which gave me pretty good insight into why people stopped buying Nokia based on reactions when I pull out my phone. Despite what many here (not saying that's you btw) love to believe, the average Joe or Jane doesn't give a **** about iOS or Android in itself. "Fanboyism" is a rarity on the streets. What does matter is imagine. It took Nokia too long to come up with a real answer to the iPhone. While the competition already made the jump to the next generation of smartphones Nokia was still trying to figure out what to do. Some people bought their half-baked smartphones and didn't end up liking it. This was incredibly damaging to the company's overall reputation. So when people see my Lumia 900 they don't truly realize it runs Windows Phone, something totally different. Instead they still have this image of Symbian stuck in their heads the second they see the Nokia logo. It will take a lot of effort on Nokia's part to reeducate people. Microsoft suffers from a similar problem when it comes to Windows Phone due to their Windows Mobile past.

Uh...except that hasn't helped HTC.

Uh...except that hasn't helped HTC.

It hasn't? As far as I can see their least profitable quarter to date since they started shipping Android phones is still better than their best ever quarter selling Windows Mobile, and introducing WP7 models caused no measurable dip in profits in 2010 or since (their problems are image related, not OS related), so I fail to see how it didn't work out for them?

Anyway, we're getting off topic...

It was a quote from: http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/tech/2012/08/133_118544.html

The world?s biggest smartphone maker is in talks with major telecom carriers on Apple?s home-turf such as Verizon Wireless about modified designs in Samsung Galaxy devices. It is also closely partnering with Microsoft (MS) to cut its dependency on Google Android, according to officials Wednesday.

Try reading next time.

Samsung customized their android interface to look more like IOS, this is samsung's own fault, not google's and not android's.

And where did I mention that it was googles or androids fault? I said "android" in regards to Samsungs andriod phones.

And what I meant was the Samsung phones running android or whatever may take a hit because of the Apple case, so safer to focus on w8 phones. Good move in any respect because w8 phones are going to be epic.

Supporting WP more doesn't mean they have to completely ditch Android, I don't know where you guys come up with that idea.

Yeah that would be a stupid idea by Samsung, but it is a good idea to focus more on wp8 considering how big a build up everything surrounding it is.

And besides at least if people see Samsung wp8 they wont automatically link it to the Apple vs Samsung trial whereas they might if it is android and samsung.

All asumptions tbh, plausible reasons but they might just want to focus on it because it will be so big
