Okay/no/no. It's hard for anyone to say since WP8 hasn't officially launched on any devices (it's just been announced). Once consumers get their hand on it, we'll clearly be able to tell. I want the platform to succeed, but I have a gut feeling it won't be able to keep up with iOS or Android.

It's already kicking both their asses in feature set, now they just need the market share.

The biggest news today was the disappointment that Nokia must be feeling. Microsoft still hasn't shipped the OS making it very hard for them to get it in the hands of consumers in the time needed (iOS and Android devices are all launching for the holiday rush). It hurts them even more that the only thing they can sell is devices that won't be getting the upgraded OS...

I'm sure this was a major reason MS didn't show off a ton of the unfinished WP8. The more good they show about the OS the deeper the cut will be to Nokia as consumers hold off purchasing existing Lumia devices. Shame, Microsoft really is making things tough for Nokia here.

I feel that both Android and iOS are getting really old. I don't think it's surpass iOS and android. But do think Windows 8 on the tablet is going far surpass Android and these will leed to growth in windows phone 8. Remember we haven't heard all features of Windows Phone 8 yet.

As much as I want to love WP7/8, I think it's missing some of the most basic (smart)phone features. For instance, repeating text message notifications! I use my phone as a pager to receive text msgs for work. At 2 in the morning, it fails to wake me up. WP8 is going to have a lot more than just features to have the market share it deserves...How about we wait for judgement after the OS officially released and we get our hands on it?

What's there to keep up with? iOS is stagnating with a seriously outdated UI and a lack of interesting new features and Android can't even sort out the most fundamental problems such as ongoing performance issues and phones that never receive updates.

As much as I love Nokia and they are a part of my phone history, I wouldn't purchase a Nokia phone because its Windows Phone or nothing.

In my opinion (for what its worth, if anything) Nokia are the best, best camera and best hardware.

I really like Android so when I purchase a phone its my first question, does it have Android or not? If its a no then I move on.

I believe Nokia could really benefit from using Windows Phone (which is a great os) but also Android (also another great os)

People like options.

Meh, I have something to say about both of those things - but rather than feeding the troll, let's stay on topic, kthnx?

If you want option, we have Meego and Symbian operating systems (great, but highly under-rated)!

My Dad has the N8 and as nice as the phone is, Symbian lets it down as there is nowhere near the compatibility with main stream services and apps compared to my previous and older phone, the HTC Desire. Meego might have gone somewhere but again it doesn't have the commercial following and so unfortunately its doomed.

If Im spending money on my main mobile OS then the only real options I have is iOS, Windows Phone or Android - Im not a fan of iOS so its just WP or Android, Nokia only offers one so they have cut their market in half.

I will be the first in the queue if Nokia diversify but as nice as Windows Phone is, its not what I want in a mobile OS right now. All of this may change in the future, Windows Phone may turn out to be the best by version 9 or 10 but its the present moment that Nokia need to concentrate on.

OK/Yes/No

I think they did OK. But nothing was really shown of the OS. Also I feel the camera samples, based on the material from the presentation, was edited; the images just looked too good - will have to wait and see on this one. Will eat my own words if it turns out to be that good.

The best thing is the touch screen. I miss using my GT540 for the ability of being able to use my fingernail or pen on the touch screen (resistive). This is something I look forward to using on other devices soon (hopefully).

I won't buy a WP device, Nokia or otherwise. Hate the interface, much prefer the desktop style of Android and the flexibility of it.

^ That's the reason I won't buy one. Plus Android is open source where I have the freedom to compile my own version.

And just because a company doesn't release the OS for your phone, you can still download and install community made ones, be it stock style or MIUI, CM, whatever the case may be.

For example, I have the Atrix (original one) which came with 2.2.2 a 2.3.4 update was released by bell for it, and after that there was no updates (4.0.4 is rumored to be coming via moto). However I am currently running CM10 (4.1.1 Jelly Bean). Just because Moto never released it or will never release JB for my phone doesn't mean I can't run it.

I have seen some custom WP mods, but not to the extent of Android.

Exactly what I'll be doing soon on mine as well. I loved messing about with the GT540 - tried to compile a ROM myself as well but it didn't work out too well :p

It just seems that having a non open source operating system is so backwards now. Though some manufactures do take the biscuit with Android and their proprietary skins and locked down bootloaders (Motorola I'm looking at you).

Staying on topic: Nokia, release one of these puppies with Android.

Market share is only one factor and the fact that iPhones sell well doesn't counter my argument. The fact is that the iPhone's UI is stale, hasn't kept up with the times and is increasingly reliant on ridiculous artifice to try and stay relevant. In terms of features, Apple are having to copy WP and to a lesser extent Android because they've run out of ideas. People may be buying iPhones but that has more to do with Apple's reputation than innovation. Stagnation perfectly describes what's happening to iOS.

The bigger issue with android is stability. When I got a new android phone before summer while waiting for WP8 I though the old stability issues with my pre trophy androids where gone.

Lo and behold, twice over the summer my phone has locked up over night causing the alarm to not go off(old familiar problem that), several more times it's locked during use or while in pocket. And the soft buttons and non removable battery makes it hard to get out of. 3 or 4 major software revisions nd they still have the same old stability issues.

Wile my trophy was a crappy HTC qualit phone meaning it was prone to crashing and locking up. WP is at the very kernel level coded to detect lock ups and reboot the device. And putting ou right back where you where. so even though I had a phone that crashed due to crap hardware, it never mattered with WP.

This one thing is a show stopped for android with me and put me on the fast lane back to WP as soon as I can afford it. Had I known WP 8 devices would arrive as close as they are and not have to wait til late December, would have jus waited. But if I can't trust my phone, well, I just can't trust it. And no why would I buy a separate alarm clock when I have a phone the should do the job, and do it better with alarms set up for each day as don't get up the same time every day, and right now I even need two alarms a day.

    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!

    • Nice, hope they *finally* fixed the issue with the NTFS driver where the system would completely brick during large file copies using the built in driver. It's been broken for years requiring me to use the older, slower, NTFS-3G FUSE driver.
