Deputy stops runaway car with unconscious driver

DAVIS COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A Davis County Sheriff's deputy risked his life to stop a moving car with an unconscious driver and a 3-year-old girl in the back seat.

Travis Call, 35, of Clearfield passed out. His body was slumped over the wheel as his car moved between 2 and 3-miles-per-hour.

"When I get there he's got traffic backed up. He was in the middle of the freeway. Cars are trying to get around him," said David County Sheriff's Deputy, Matt Boucher.

Several emergency calls summoned Deputy Boucher to the scene.

"My main thought was I need to get the car stopped. I mean I've got daughters myself and there's a little girl in the back seat there's a lot of traffic. I didn't want the situation to get worse," said Boucher.

A large semi-truck followed the car to ensure no speeding motorist rear ended the unconscious driver and precious cargo inside.

"It drove off the freeway, hit the jersey barrier, continued traveling southbound said there was a little child in the back of the car," said Matt Boucher.

A closer look at Call's car reveals a hard impact with the cement barrier and his rear passenger tire was blown out.

This was the scene Deputy Boucher ran toward to stop the car.

Call's door was locked, but he was able to reach into an open window to pull the emergency brake.

Call regained consciousness after his car was stopped. "He was acting very strange and then he went unconscious on us again in the back of the ambulance," said Boucher.

A potential disaster was averted by a brave deputy willing to risk his life to save an unconscious driver and others around him.

"It's just another day for me, but I'm glad it ended the way it did that nobody got hurt," said Boucher.

Good job, though not to put a downer on his efforts but 2-3 mp/h is a bit slower than walking pace is it not? (Though I suppose a free way is like a motorway?)

risk his life ?? :s all well and good he got it sorted but it wasnt that much of a bad situation over dramatized much if it was a standard sized car most people can push back on the 3mph
