DDR4 coming? Or what is fastest RAM I can get?

Recommended Posts

When is DDR4 likely to float up into the market? I'm needing to build a PC with the fastest working memory possible while still remaining 100% stable while running 24/7/365.

If it's going to be over 3 months, what would be my best option for the absolute fastest RAM on the market by that time? I plan to air cool, but will throw a big fan on top of the RAM modules for added stability.

They're saying the end of 2013.

Look at Newegg, On the left pane under memory, it has different speeds. But speed does not mean fast ram. I know several people that just use DDR3 1600. And they are playing the latest games.

RAM definitely won't be your bottleneck, so there's not much of a reason to get overclocked RAM or anything beyond DDR3 1600. The differences in speeds is tiny and not worth paying a premium for anything fancy. As long as you get something from a quality brand, it will be perfectly fine. RAM usually has a lifetime warranty because they hardly ever fail.

Sorry for going off topic, but can you use the normal font colour please because I use the darkside theme and your text is black and barely readable, thank you. :)

i'll agree w/ the other posts - RAM speed doesnt matter these days. although, im curious to know why the OP needs a PC w/ the fastest RAM speeds possible.

btw, i thought i read that Corsair had just released some ultra-sex DDR3 DIMMs running at like 3GHz. anyone else see that?

(update) maybe it was this set i was thinking of --> Dominator Platinum

I think we are likely to see quad channel coming to mid-range sockets before we see DDR4. Right now the X79 platform by Intel uses Quad Channel and it basically doubles memory bandwidth over Dual Channel which negates the need for DDR4 right now at this moment. Their mid-range 1155 socket still uses Dual Channel but Intel could go Quad Channel with Haswell and give DDR3 more years. I think that is atleast more likely than them going to DDR4 with their next architecture.

Another thing to consider is that DDR3 currently hasn't topped out. They are producing 2400MHz kits and every 4 months the prices are decreasing so much that high speed ram like 1866MHz is becoming a common purchase for many mid-range builds. And in-fact Intels Haswell platform will officially support DDR3 1866MHz, current generation Ivy Bridge processors only officially support DDR3 1600MHz and below, of course it works fine with faster memory but Intel considers that out of their specification, not that it causes any problems though, quite the opposite.

    • Fire and rehire. Doubt the work contracts are as favourable. Smart tactic using AI to do it legally.
    • > And, of course, it includes in-game purchases. Sigh.. of course it does. I just don't understand why anyone would want to play this on PC, when the far superior AoE 2/DE exists. Just kill this with fire already. Or a trebuchet.
