Getting tired of threads being closed just because the prefix box wasn'

Recommended Posts

even though they're not my threads I'm really getting tired of threads (mostly in the J&FS section) being closed just because they forgot to check the prefix box, even if it they did technically give tags to the topic

here's a good recent example of what i'm talking about https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1108565-bathroom-talk/

^ as you can see that topic has tags, just not a prefix

I don't see why mods/devs don't just listen to us and make it so the prefix box is checked by default. as I see it there's no reason to ever not have it checked so it just makes sense to have it checked by default

that way there would be a lot less threads being closed for such a stupid reason

WE WANT OUR FREEDOMS! WE WON'T ACCEPT THIS POLICE STATE!!!

Really, I thought the whole tag requirement thing is a little silly, but I don't often create threads, so I could care less.

I don't know why they can't have it automatically set the first tag as prefix in the jokes section. I've forgotten to check that box a bunch of times, and the moment I click submit I say "Oh ****!" and then I edit the post and click the box.

You have to consider that most mods are adolescent males who are experiencing their first bout with what they consider real power. The owner(s) of the websites forget that it is the community that makes their site popular, many times web site owner(s) forget that (ask Digg).

Excuse you.

We're adhering to the site rules that we have been asked to enforce. Those rules can be changed if deemed necessary, and we can discuss the possiblity of that happening. But there is no need to insult the staff, and consider this your gentle reminder that publicly insulting/questioning moderator decisions is frowned upon as well. The OP was respectful and logical in presenting their case--please do the same.

Thanks.

I just saw that thread and can't believe it was closed either. The thread was tagged as per the requirement. If there's an additional step that's so important to the mod then he should just tick the box himself rather than closing the thread.

The thread was tagged as per the requirement.

According to the sticky thread on the top of the forum

he relevant tag must be selected, and set to Use as prefix.

To add tags, simply type the relevant tag and then a comma to save it (example: win7,)

Using the tag system helps new and old members, as well as guests to find posts relating to their query.

if he didn't set it to "use as prefix" then no it wasn't!

Excuse you.

Wow, I have to say I have never questioned the response of a Moderator, but in this case I do not see in anything that SpyCatcher wrote that insulted or questioned any Moderator. On the other hand the Op clearly stated that a reason to close a thread by the mods was stupid. Something isn't right by that response. IMHO

Thanks

I don't see why members can't just post correctly?

Again, Wow! Maybe we make mistakes and miss checking the box. If it is so important then make the box checked by default.

If you have a look at the message that the mod took the time to add when he locked the thread the first line (in bold) simply says that tagging is a requirement. There are numerous problems here:

  • You shouldn't have to read a whole lot of rules just to post a joke
  • The use a prefix option seems to be particularly redundant and should just default to setting the first tag as a prefix
  • The usefulness of the tags in general is debatable
  • Mods (or one overzealous mod in particular) shouldn't just close threads for such trivial reasons

Given the number of posts you add to the jokes and funny stuff thread it's pretty telling that even you have trouble remembering to check the prefix option Warwagon so it's pretty clear that the whole thing is flawed.

I agree with what the members are saying. Make it default.

Mods... Normally pretty smart idea to take smart ideas and give them a little thought, instead of going into defense mode and trying to make the members feel like dip****s or ass's... Just a thought though.

^ No disrespect -- can't you simply make it so the the prefix box is checked by default ?

Would save a lot of troubles. :)

How hard is it to check something, you want them to kiss your boo boos too?

Yeah, you've been excused sir.

how hard is it for you to understand that humans aren't perfect and that we sometimes forget little details

really though, is making the prefix option checked by default really such a big deal?

A number of times i have checked the box, and it still wont put it as the thread icon.

My recent threads are prime examples, the one i did regarding the iOS upload test was tagged, but didnt show. When it was moved to site and forum it is showing as correctly tagged.

What makes you think that? I don't think anyone on the moderation team is below the age of 20.

It doesn't take a perfect human being to take notice of this (see below). I don't see why it's so hard for people to follow some simple guidelines. The main reason threads are closed is to reinforce these guidelines. If I made a thread and it was closed because I didn't tag it correctly, I'd be sure not to make the same mistake again.

Also, I don't know if it's possible to check off the tag prefix option by default for specific forums. It may be a global setting that affects all the forums.

And therein lies the problem. We don't need all threads in all forums using this setting; the tagging system would become an irrelevant mess.

The tagging system is already an irrelevant mess when I see plenty of tags that only the words, " on, in, was," and so on. There are plenty of post that are adding every little stupid word as a tag, which doesn't help the system in any way.

    • Stop asking people that. It's a "No True Scotsman" argument in that you are attempting to discredit the opinions of a person by Attacking the Messenger. The reason that these are logical fallacies is the TRUTH is based on facts as supported by evidence. Nothing else. So, always debate the facts with evidence to reach the truth. Once you learn to do this, you'll be able to recognize when people are fearmongering and lying to you for their own selfish ends.
    • It doesn't matter if you didn't directly hear it from person X or Y. Every one of your statements comes straight from the racist, skinhead, anti-immigrant, be afraid of everything, "they are all taking our jobs", etc. etc. mouthpieces. That's where Farag and Putin heard it from too...and used it against the UK. So, while you keep disavowing the people who publicly peddled that position, you keep proving over and over again that those lies influenced you into being tricked when the Brexit vote came around too. In fact, your final sentence makes it crystal clear that it was the racist/anti-immigrant lies you fell and voted for, since you stated that you didn't have an issue with the economic trade issues with the EU. Ahem. To be clear, all of these LIES are EONS old, mate. They are the same fearmongering lies peddled to the same ignorant, gullible cowards by the same charlatans, snake-oil salesmen, and would be demagogues who've been doing this since caveman Ugh lied about his slightly different neighbor in order to steal his land. And, finally, you answered your own previous question. The reason that the EU isn't clamoring to bring the UK back is that they have had enough of people who would rather shoot themselves in the foot than get over their "insecurity issues". It's the same reason the entire world is moving away from the USA as fast as it can...
