Apple iPad marketshare drops to 52%, Androids on the rise

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise that more Americans than ever now own tablets, but if you'd ever wanted some quantifiable data to go along with that homespun wisdom, then the Pew Research Center is glad to help. According to its latest report, 22 percent of US adults now own a tablet of some form. While the iPad remains the dominant player in the space with a 52 percent market share, this figure starkly contrasts the 81 percent share that Pew reported in 2011. As you might expect, Android tablets have made significant inroads and now account for 48 percent of the overall tablet space. Leading the Android charge is the Kindle Fire, which alone accounts for 21 percent of all tablets sold. It's worth pointing out that Pew's survey was conducted before the release of either the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire HD, which means that even the most recent information is a bit behind the curve.

Didn't realize that Apple iPad was an OS or that Android was a device. Can we compare things that actually makes sense? I would figure a techsite like engadget could tell the difference between an OS and a device.

This is a pew study, as noted on the graphs. They make perfect sense. What other OS ships on an iPad? Its the same as every other survey that breaks down iphone v android v Microsoft v RIM etc. iPhone isn't an OS, but you know what OS they're talking about. It's not like they didn't break it down by OEM as well.

What other apple product class' itself as an tablet besides the iPad?

It would seem "flamboyant" to just list as iOS, whilst Andriod have quite a number of tablet devices to list all.

Thats my only conclusion as to why a tech giant would do that, I guess you didn't figure that out ;)

So according to that, we are now comparing the iPad line to all Android devices? Obviously not. According to the data, iOS and Android wiped every other tablet os off the market. There are Windows tablets out there, yet according to this, they don't exist as of 2012. That's funny considering I have a Samsung Windows 7 tablet next to me that I have been testing for work. According to this, it is a figment of my imagination.

Well there is the iPad 1, iPad 2, and the iPad. But hey, lets just focus on a useless number like market share and ignore not compare something that actually matters, like say, the top selling Android device vs the top selling iPad.

I love my Android tablet and I would buy another. I think Android may do in tablets what they did in phones, unless Windows 8 is a deciding factor.

Maybe Android will do as good with tabs as phones, but the tab success is slow and not nearly as fast and their phones were.

iPad had a pretty big drop tho over the past year.

Can we compare things that actually makes sense?

Apple and iFans loooove to compare useless numbers as long as it makes them look better, this here is actually a quite reasonable comparison all things considered. Also since when is market share useless? Oh yeah, since Apple is losing it.

And people keep saying Android is failing in the tablet market lol. Even if we exclude Amazon's offerings, Android is doing well and growing year on year.

This research didn't even include Nexus 7 which is estimate to be sold in about 10 million units.

he he.. you do realize that we are looking at the same exact scenario with phones.. Android open system will work the same way every time. With a lot of choices you have a strong competition so not all sales will go to one company. That's perfectly natural and good for consumers. But eventually, as we have seen with phones, Android manufacturers will start selling individually more tablet than Apple.. it's inevitable.

I think it's funny. Where are all those Apple fans who were telling me that iPad will go even higher than 68% they had? As far as I can, they are dropping so fast in marketshare that they are taking a nose dive. I am pretty sure they will be below 50% when Nexus 7 numbers are counted.

Since you know the numbers, tell everyone how much the sales of each model of iPhone and iPad decreased as upgrades came. That is my point. Unless the market is fully saturated, it is a useless number when it comes to making a decision as a business, which is the only entity that would make any decision based on number of units out there anyway. Anyone else, they are following a fad, which according to most people hear, that is a bad thing.

No, the above article if noone actualy read it is saying that Android is gaining ground in the below $199 value tablets. Nook, Kindle, etc...

This is the same like comparing the sale of $300 netbooks with the sale of $1000 utlrabooks. Their main functionality and usage is different as so is the market they are after.

I am not sure about the apple fans, but if you talk to any normal person he/she will tell you the same thing. Apple owns more than 68% of the tablet market at the price range of $499 and above.

And that number is now obviously 52% and dropping.

Android gods have some people researching this stuff 24/7, must be exhausting.... in the end, no one cares except executives and stock holders of said particular stock... use what you like and DON'T use what you don't like. Some people seem to NEVER grasp that concept.

Apple. Carefully cutting up and dividing the market as necessary to make their numbers look good.

When all tablets are over $499, it's just "the tablet market".

When tablets start competing on price, ignore all tablets cheaper than the iPad and it becomes "the premium tablet market".

When OS vs. OS numbers aren't on Apple's side anymore, it's the "OEM vs. OEM premium tablet market".

And if Amazon Android devices start outselling iPads, it'll become the "specific model vs. specific model" market, guaranteeing that, as long as the Kindle Fire HD 4G 64GB in white sells less than the iPad 4G 64GB in white, Apple fans can cheer.

Android might be gaining market share, but their eco-system is horribly fractured.

Here I sit with a Samsung Galaxy Tav 8.9 LTE on Android 3.2 and can't even install Chrome on it because it requires 4.0.

Half of the applications I want to install, I can't. Yay market share!!

Is that iPad falling or the market expanding though? I see no demand for Android above the $99-$199 cheapo tablet markets. The success of Android phones is down to cheap or free-on-contract phones (You notice this once you look outside the US bubble). So far they don't have any market in $400+ tablets (see Amazon vs Samsung in that chart). It is also amusing to see people clubbing Kindle etc. i.e. non-PlayStore tablets to inflate Android numbers. They don't add to the ecosystem and hence no point in counting them under Android.

I think it was always fairly obvious that Android tablets would brute force the market just like Android phones.

Anywho, both iOS and Android are excellent products and it's good to see competition :D

    • Ocenaudio 3.19.5 by Razvan Serea Ocenaudio is a full featured, fast and easy to use audio and music editor. It is the ideal software for people who need to edit and analyze audio files without complications. Ocenaudio also has powerful features that will please more advanced users. To assist ocenaudio development, a powerful toolset of audio editing, analysis and manipulation called Ocen Framework was created. ocenaudio is also based on Qt framework, a well known library for cross-platform development. Cross-platform support ocenaudio is available for all major operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Native applications are generated for each platform from a common source, in order to achieve excelent performance and seamless integration with the operating system. All versions of ocenaudio have a uniform set of features and the same graphical interface, so the skills you learn in one platform can be used in the others. VST plugins support Ocenaudio supports VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins, giving its users access to numerous effects. Like the native effects, VST effects can use real-time preview to aide configuration. Real-time preview of effects Applying effects such as EQ, gain and filtering is an important part of audio editing. However, it is very tricky to get the desired result by adjusting the controls configuration alone: you must listen the processed audio. To ease the configuration of audio effects, ocenaudio has a real time preview feature: you hear the processed signal while adjusting the controls. The effect configuration window also includes a miniature view of the selected audio signal. You can navigate on this miniature view in the same way as you do on the main interface, selecting parts that interest you and listening to the effect result in real time. Multiselection for delicate editions To speed up complex audio files editing, ocenaudio includes multi-selection. With this amazing tool, you can simultaneously select different portions of an audio file and listen, edit or even apply an effect to them. For example, if you want to normalize only the excerpts of an interview where the interviewee is talking, just select them and apply the effect. Eficient edition of large files With ocenaudio, there is no limit to the length or the quantity of the audio files you can edit. Using an advanced memory management system, the application keeps your files open without wasting any of your computer's memory. Even in files several hours long, common editing operations such as copy, cut or paste happen almost instantly. Fully featured spectrogram Besides offering an incredible waveform view of your audio files, ocenaudio has a powerful and complete spectrogram view. In this view, you can analyze the spectral content of your audio signal with maximum clarity. Advanced users will be surprised to find that the spectrogram settings are applied in real time. The display is updated immediately when altering features such as the number of frequency bands, window type and size and dynamic range of the display. Ocenaudio 3.19.5 changelog: Fixes crashes related to audio devices on Windows (DirectSound and ASIO) Fixes several crashes and memory corruption issues Fixes opening several headerless files at once, which previously dropped all but one Improves batch export by suggesting and remembering the destination folder Fixes accented and non-Latin characters in VST plug-in and compressed-archive file names Adds zstd compression support and updates the archive library Other bug fixes and improvements Download: Ocenaudio 64-bit | Portable | ~40.0 MB (Freeware) Download: Ocenaudio for Linux and Mac OS View: Ocenaudio Homepage | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
    • I did think about a Echo show once and it would be useful to see what my cameras see. But my brother got one and I changed my mind. Adverts and not really worth the price just to see my cameras. I have a load of dots and a Echo Gen 4, they will do.
    • I asking where you are from or live, because if you don't live in the U.K, why are you so bothered? That is another reason I voted out, E.U and people poking their noses in where they should not be. Sadly we still have it, Trump, and his cronies. Putin as well and no doubt others. It makes no difference what we believe, if we made the right choice or not, we are out. As I said to someone when the news first broke we have voted out, we just need to make the best of it. I have no problems with closer ties to the E.U, we still need to trade. Just don't want to be in their club.
    • So you think I voted out because i am anti-immigrant. I am fed up with those that come over and think that we owe them something. The ones that are at the moment coming over from France where they are already in a safe country because they think and no doubt will get everything chucked at them. While people who were born and bred here get very little. I have nothing against as i have said before those that come here and work. In fact I know full well that our NHS would struggle without them. I do have a problem with those that come over here and try to push their religion and their way of life onto us. My reasons for voting out was because of what the E.U is and is also becoming. I did not agree with Freedom of movement, not because I don't want people over here, but because people need to be checked before being allowed to cross borders and that goes both ways. But my main thing was because the E.U is becoming if not already a united states of Europe. The only reason countries like Poland and Romania joined was because they had no money. When my partner left Poland, she had nothing, Poland had nothing, that is why she left. Wanted to learn something and earn a living. The E.U would have us back according to Michel Barnier. https://www.euronews.com/my-eu...ator-barnier-tells-euronews Why are you so scared to say what country you are in?
