Is Console Gaming Doomed?

Recommended Posts

"unfortunately" tablet and phone gaming is the next big thing and is quickly taking over console gaming, though atm not eating into console gaming as that category is also still growing.

No it's not. The best tablet and phone gaming is good for is casial gaming. The touch controls will not replace a gamepad or a mouse and keyboard ANY time soon.

Ha! Your funny, sir! I would love to see a Surface play Crysis 3!

The Tegra in the Surface RT, should be able to handle Crysis 3, especially since Crysis 3 is designed to be scalable, far more so than Crysis. The HD 4000 in the Pro however I'm not so sure, but I'm not sure where the intel HD series are in performance compared to the tegra's since Id on't much bother witht he Intel HD stuff.

LOL WAT? I could go to every store in my entire city and there would be ZERO standard def TVs for purchase. 720p? Sure, lots of those but that's still HD.

I'm unaware of any new SDTVs that are still being sold. Aside from certain medical/industrial applications CRTs have been out of production worldwide for a couple of years now.

Gotta agree with this. Even a year and a half ago, I spent months trying to find a SD TV (or at least 480p EDTV) because I was making a setup for my older consoles. But even the smallest TVs were at least 720p and the only SD ones I found were ridiculous expensive ones on eBay that required local pickup anyways. I can't see ever finding these for sale anymore unless it's at a garage sale or something and the one I acquired was because a coworker didn't want it anymore.

I would love a small LCD with 480p resolution for my classic console setup, but 720p+ are what sell so I doubt I will be able to find one.

No it's not what ? are you arguing that smartphone and tablet games are rapidly increasign and takign over console gaming and PC gaming ? because they are. Whether they are casual or not is one thing. which is also debatable, sure a lot, most even, by far, of the touch games are casual. BUT there are touch games with touch controls which are not casual in any way. Granted they are not FPS games, but different games made for the touch controls.

Also the Surface comes with a keyboard, and you can hook up a mouse to it, AND you can even hook it up to your TV and use it as a console with KB/M or a USB/BT controller.

Console gaming isn't doomed. 4K won't become the standard for at least another 5-10 years. Even now, most companies don't even broadcast anything in 1080p60. It's either 720p60 or 1080i60. And current consoles can't run games natively at 1080p. That's something we'll see with next-gen consoles.

Also, the processing power required to run games at 4K (2160p [3480x2160]) is significantly higher than 1080p (1920x1080). Sure, it's a higher resolution but you'd be losing a lot of processing power that could be used on other things like higher AA/AF or a greater level of detail.

I went through this too in late-2009. I ended up getting a 27" Sansui at Walmart, the last model of CRT they carried. They stopped selling them shortly afterward.

good that you live in a country where everything is shining and new; unfortunately not everyone lives there.

Actually nothing is broadcast in 720p60., Broadcasts are done in 720p30 or 1080i60(which your box or tv will convert to 1080p30). The only exeption is 3D channels. but that's a bit different anyway, it's still 30 per eye.

The problem with mobile gaming is the gameplay, it's uber crap unless it's a game made for 2min attention span people like Angry Birds and cut the rope. They are more 'Time waister' than games to me.

Also remember, current gen console all run their game under 720p, then upscale them to 720p and 1080p. They use no AA (or a very late version of FXAA like 1 or v2 witch is crap), no AF and depending on the port, MEDIUM setting and LOW setting are the Consoles version setting.

Most people don't see the difference because they don't care, like we gone CD to MP3...

Some people do, I for myself don't consider anything lower than 60fps to be enjoyable because i've been playing at the framerate for so long now that under it it's annoy me

The Tegra comes no where close to the horse power of modern GPUs--expecally if someone has SLI or Xfire setup. It could run, yes, but on low resolution and Lag like crazy. Hell, on my machine (specs in sig) Crysis 3 MP Alpha runs smooth as a baby's butt on Ultra when nothing's happening, but on huge explosions it stutters.

Of course it's not, but you also don't need a top of the line GPU to run Crysis 3 with decent graphics. You only said run Crysis 3, not run Crysis 3 at ultra settings.

A friendly message to uninformed people mumbling about the death of console and hardcore gaming overall: your mind is disturbed, maybe it's rotting just yet. Go see a good doctor. Fast.

Noone said anything about the death of consoles or core gaming.

1080p + becoming common? 1080p isn't even widely as common, since there's lots and lots of of SD televisions still being sold, even now; also it took some time for the TV prices to go down.

And may i ask Where you live because every walmart Bimart Bestbuy Sears has nothing but HDTV LCDs and Plazmas Where is it you live that SD TVs are more normal and being sold more of you be an idiot to buy an SD TV in this day and age and to top off the fact the bigguest i bet you could get if you found a store that sells thems till would be 27" if that

If your going to have a crappy experience, why play it then? Desktop PC's are going to be around for a long time...

This topic thread is rediculous. Console gamers will ALWAYS say that the PC is "dead" or "dying" pfft hardly. PC has been the main stay of real gamers for years. I started gaming on a frigin comodore 64 which was better then than anything else on the market. My $1500 PC has lasted me for over four years and is still more powerful than your pitiful consoles. I would rather die than play a console game with its crappy resolution and inflexible gaming. I can mod Skyrim and well you can't. I can play at 1080 and you can't. I can use your xbox controller OR a mouse and keyboard and you can't. Game consoles are for idiots and children. If you can't use a computer LEARN , and quit saying that some dumb touch screen peice of garbage is the next gaming standard...give me a break. Tablets are dumb.

PC gaming will die first, following by console and eventually replaced by tablet gaming..

Yeah right. There is a reason pc gaming has steadily grown again in the last 5 years as consoles become more and more obsolete. And it's not the convenience (lol) of a small screen and ****ty controls.

PC gaming isn't dieing any time soon.

At least around here, sports are broadcast in 720p60.

Um again it's not just about resolution. 1080P is awesome but you still, like was previously mentioned need the hardware to push AA/AF to make it look good. Consoles can hardly do this at the moment. A computer does more and with more detail than any sad console ever could hope to do. And as far as playing games by fiddling around with your fingers on a screen...again just dumb and messy. At least MS got that right with the Kinetic.

How is Crysis 3 a crappy experience just because you're not running it in ultra. ? in fact Crysis 3 looks quite good even on low end Hardware.

Kinect, not Kinetic.

also PC gaming is fun, and cool, Console gaming, also fun and cool, and tablet and phone games are also fun and cool. If you want to limit your fun to just sittign on your PC. well that's up to you.

Seems pointless as it's filmed in 30 or 25.

I think the point he was making is that tablet/mobile games aren't and never will be as complex as games made for PCs or consoles. Saying tablets are the future of gaming is laughable.

    • What they really need to do is automatically spell "loses" and "lose" correctly since nobody seems to know how to anymore. Then they blame spellcheck/autocomplete and don't realize autocomplete is just filling in the word for them automatically so it was misspelled in the first place.
    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
