It's not just that. Someone may need to sell their console but buy it again at a later date. Another person may need to replace a broken console. Imagine how you'd feel when you learn that the games you bought with your Nintendo Network Account are tied to the console you bought them on. Wanting to log into your account at a friend's house is a minor annoyance compared to what I just mentioned.

Granted there should be an easier way to do it, and I think the article mentions they might enable doing so at a later date via firmaware, but surely if you call them up and explain the situation they will initiate a transfer process. Again sure, that is a pain, but I cannot see how they would not do it if you call them up. So it is an annoyance, but not the end of the world.

Also I do have to wonder just how often the scenario you mention above will happen, especially initially. I do not see all that many people purchasing multiple WiiU's. By the time this would become a more standard scenario, hopefully they have the patch out for it.

I'm not a "kid" however yes for me that's a big feature i make use of on the Xbox 360.

At Uni we had a gaming night each week, everyone brought there profile / saves on a memory stick and we would play a different game each week.

Even now i will get together with some mates every couple of weeks and have a gaming session, as i have two 360's people just bring there profile round and were good to go. No effort to get a 4 player gaming session going with 2x people on each console. Plus along as one profile on each console owns the DLC that content can be used when the profile is signed in to live, regardless of if it was purchased on that console or not.

I can see how that would not bother a lot of people, however i personally think features like that are great if you game with friends.

Sorry, guess I should have said young adults. With that said, what kid means to me now definitely does not mean what it once did to me, but I could imagine being 21 or so and being referred to as a kid as offensive, I am sure I would not have liked it, but that I was including those in there young 20's. Believe me, I wish I was a kid again.

This is just a terrible move by Nintendo.

Xbox Live Gamertag, PlayStation Network ID, Apple ID, Google Account, etc....ALL can be logged into on any device. Nintendo's restricting it to a specific console is just backwards to the way things should, and as you can see for the most part do already, work.

I guess bringing your account to other people's places is a big thing among the kids today? I am seriously asking, as in my day you did not bring your account anywhere, that was not around. You brought your entire console.

So I guess I do not see the big deal with this as it does not affect me personally. So I am curious, what is the biggest impact of this? Saved games? I could see that being the biggest deal. You are at a friends, you are further along in the New Super Mario game, so you want to load up your save. That is about the biggest thing I can come up with why this sucks. Are there other reasons?

There are (local) co-op games on the PS3 that allow you to sign into your account with whoever you are playing with to get your trophies/achievements. And yeah save games as well, I regularly play my GF's PS3 when I am at hers and download my saves off the cloud to carry on playing titles - We have our accounts on each others PS3s for downloading games from the accounts as well.

Quite often I cannot be bothered lugging my PS3 to my GFs, so I appreciate how smooth things are on PSN for letting me use my account on her PS3.

It's simply an entirely counter-productive system (one could say overly vicious DRM), and quite damaging to those in specific scenarios like me above.

THIS, and many many other reasons is why I jumped ship with Nintendo and refuse to buy ANY of their hardware, flat out refuse.. and I had the money to buy a console, guess what I'm getting? Want a good and super powerful console, wait until the new Xbox, or if you're even more patient, wait until PS4, don't give Nintendo your money.

I know people well into their 30's who do Xbox gaming nights, 2 consoles 4 people. means at least 2 people need to use online profiles, more if you use 3 or 4 player split screen for 6-8 people.

Okay, 2 valid reasons why this method does suck.

Since I never do either they really did not cross my mind, but no doubt hearing them now makes me realize what a truly horrible idea it was to implement.

Actually, I really don't.

There have been a few occasions over the years we have played stuff together, almost all Nintendo games actually, but nowhere near anything that would warrant her having her own Gamertag, Save Games, etc.

I tend to stick to SP games any way, so when all is said and done, I actually prefer the fact she does not game.

It provides me some "alone time," she reads or watches whatever TV she needs to catch up on, so it works out for both of us.

On to the WiiU, I am actually really, really enjoying ZombiU at the moment. I think it is a damn good representation of the good way to use the Game Pad, it does indeed enhance gameplay and not hinder it.

The one and only criticism I personally have is I am still trying to get completely used to the Game Pad, the right analog stick being above the buttons is a bit weird for sure, but getting used to it pretty quickly. While I am sure a lot of games are going to utilize it in a gimmicky way, there is definite promise just based on my brief time with ZombiU for the GamePad to add another level to the gameplay.

  • 2 weeks later...

In the past six years I?ve been through four Xbox 360 consoles and three PlayStation 3s. Which has been a pain, but each and every time I?ve been able to simply transfer my existing system account to the new console through the magic of the internet.

You?d think that would be something Nintendo could manage rather easily, but nope. Turns out that the Nintendo Network ID you create for a Wii U will, for now at least, be tied to that console. If you lose that console ? for whatever reason ? you lose the ID that went with it. If you buy a second-hand console, and want to import your ID, you can?t. If you?re at a friend?s house and want to sign on using your account, you can?t.

Here?s the relevant statement from Nintendo?s support page:

RS2vN.jpg

That ?future? consoles thing is a little confusing, as it?s unclear whether they mean the next console after the Wii U, or simply Wii U machines in the future, when this feature is patched in. We?ll contact Nintendo and update if we hear back.

Hopefully it?s something that can be patched in, because boy, if people lose their accounts and their consoles at the same time, they?ll be pretty damn upset.

Can I Log Into My Nintendo Network Account on a Different Console? [Nintendo Support, thanks everyone!]

Since MiiVerse (and by extension, NNID's) are coming to 3DS at some point, I would venture to say that when miiverse is made available for 3DS is when NNID's will be made more portable. It's a little odd they omitted this in the first place, but hopefully they can correct it in the short term. No one wants to create a presence for themselves only to lose it completely if there is a hardware failure.

FYI, Nintendo will allow you to transfer your account in the case of a hardware failure (as long as you use their repair service)

    • The data center gold rush has tossed all forms of sensibility and reasoning right out of the window. The craziest part being that AI infrastructure isn't driven by consumer demand. It's being driven by manufacturers to force AI onto the market, consumers be damned.

    • EU says AWS and Microsoft Azure should be treated as DMA gatekeepers by Pradeep Viswanathan Under the European Commission's Digital Markets Act (DMA), a company is presumed to be a gatekeeper if it meets certain quantitative thresholds. However, the Commission can still investigate and designate a company even if it does not meet the numeric thresholds, provided the service has a major market impact. The European Commission launched its investigations into AWS and Azure on November 18, 2025, to address unfair or anti-competitive practices in the cloud sector. Today, the European Commission has informed Amazon and Microsoft of its preliminary view that their cloud computing services, AWS and Azure, should be designated as gatekeepers under the DMA. The EC highlighted that Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure are the largest and second-largest cloud computing services in the European Union. Both of these platforms act as important gateways between businesses and their customers in the EU. The EC further mentioned that AWS and Azure have reached significant turnover, built large and entrenched user bases, and benefit from high switching costs and customer lock-in. Furthermore, their operational capacity and investments appear to have outpaced those of competitors. Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition, said the following: It is important to note that the findings are preliminary and do not decide the final outcome. Amazon and Microsoft can now review the findings and respond to the Commission. However, if the Commission confirms its preliminary findings, it will formally designate Amazon and Microsoft as gatekeepers for AWS and Azure. Once designated, Microsoft and Amazon will have six months to bring their cloud services into full compliance with the DMA’s rules and regulations.
