Windows 8 Sales are actually Amazing - 40 million sold

Recommended Posts

People are enjoying Windows 8 by and large.

Considering all the buzz they generated at launch, it should be no surprise. I wonder what Store numbers look like. There's another press release I'd love to see.

How does it sound like that? That is actually the complete opposite of what it sounds like.

compare the windows 7 sales for the first month to windows 8 for first month, windows 7 still is higher and still holds the fastest selling windows os in history bragging rights... now if they can sell more then 180 million in 9 months they can take that from windows 7

but then to quote InfoWorld 9 months into the windows 7 sales "Do the math: 175 million copies of Windows 7 isn't that impressive"

Yeah, I definitely want to see how the MS stores are doing!

I'd love Surface numbers, maybe tomorrow they may mention something and i'd love to hear that Nokia did get more than 2.5 million orders for their 920 as well.

To be fair, he never said Win8 didn't sell well.

He said that it's not doing as well as internal predictions.

40mil is great but if they expected to sell 70mil then it's not doing great

Whatever, I think 40 mil is not bad, specially after all the complaining I've been reading over the past year

Well there was word of "under a third" of initial estimates. (Though I don't believe that was Thurrott's own claim) And honestly, I don't think Microsoft were crazy enough to predict 120 million Windows 8 licenses in 1 month, especially given Windows 7's numbers.

Selling licenses does not make 8 a better OS imo

(this is not directed at you)

First it was: Nobody is going to buy Windows 8...it will be a disaster

Microsoft: Windows 8 sold 4M upgrades in first weekend

Then: How many were OEM? (4M upgrades you dumbass)

Then: Windows 8 fails internal projections

Microsoft: Windows 8 sells 40M in first month

Then: but Windows 7 is still fastest selling - Windows 8 is a FAIL! or These are OEM sales and sitting on shelves

blah blah

This is beyond funny.

So if it sold about the same number of licenses as Windows 7 did in the first month, how come the adoption rate is so much lower?

I'd imagine there's a large amount of people who bought the license at the ridiculously good upgrade price just so they have it for later.

but as it stands right now windows 7 is still the fastest selling OS, that doesn't mean Win8 is doing bad

One of the main reasons that Windows 7 sold so well was because of Vista being poor for anyone not on a mid-high end rig and XP being obsolete.

Obviously Windows 7 is still a fantastic operating system, so there isn't that desperation to upgrade to something better for most people. Especially when the new OS took a pretty undeserved beating from certain cretinous IT "pros" who react to change (in an ever changing industry) like someone who suffers from a nut allergy taking a bath in peanut butter.

Pretty decent numbers. The ultimate test will be whether the numbers stay consistent moving forward.

Also, do these numbers include all the Surface tablets? The numbers are a little less impressive if it does (PC-wise).

Nope.

Can we lol at Thurrott now? Pretty please?

I've been loling at Thurrott for years now. Join the party.

Oh, and just to **** you guys off more, Windows 8 is garbage!!

right - my point being that some people will claim Windows 8 a disaster no matter what and that they have been proven wrong consistently at regular intervals.

example:

I would be seriously surprised if it DIDN'T get this many sales at such a low price. Correct me if I'm wrong but 7 never sold for that low. People would have updated for the hell if it when getting a new laptop.

I will correct you because you are wrong.

Windows 7 had free upgrades if you bought a PC after June, Windows 8 actually has $15 (i.e. Windows 8 is costlier)

Windows 7 had $50 promotional price, Windows 8 has $40 (not much difference OR 20% cheaper in Apple style to make it look larger)

Windows 7 had $150 family promotion much after launch, Windows 8 has none like that.

Windows 7 had a "full" version for sale, Windows 8 doesn't have it.

etc. etc.

Windows 7 took 3 months to sell 60 million licenses. Windows 8 took 1 month to sell 40 Million.. i'm not sure HOW YOU can spin that as bad or "vista" like.

Where are you getting your numbers from?

Windows 7 cost 3 times as much as Windows 8 (edit: at it's highest possible price point) and the adoption rate was faster and higher by a significant margin.

If you're going to spout unsourced nonsense, well, you get what you give.

Windows 7 at $50 promotional price? Never saw that, really. I guess you'd have to really look for someone who got this price.

Windows 7 family pack was never available in Brazil, for instance... nor promotional prices. It actually used to cost over $ 120,00 (upgrade) and $240 equivalent and I really believe Brazil is not the only country with such a high prices.

Windows 7 was very pirated, because it was very expensive.

So... It may be selling 40 million, but those numbers are financially much, much lower than Windows 7 or even Vista numbers, as those $40 discount prices are actually everywhere in world right now, not only in the US.

MS will more than makeup for any discounts because of the store providing long residual revenue.. (as well as selling more MSDN subscriptions, more people looking into Azure services, Office services so on and so forth)

I don't think you realize just how big of a deal this is..

"Windows 8 has sold 40 million licenses so far"

Only 7 actually installed it

And only 3 of those people did not reinstall 7

Unfortunately 2 of those 3 reinstalled XP

1 Died

Not completely true, they'll always have Shane and Dot Matrix :p

I don't... Of course it is all about money, but you only gotta hope that they do know what they're doing. Only time will tell.

On a more serious note, do a search --> windows 7 promotion $50 site:neowin.net

I don't know what pricing worldwide was for 7 but whatever man, keep on hating.

I got two W7 for 50? each, it was an official offer right before launch in Germany. Though you had to be quick, numbers were limited.

And financially you have to consider that MS gets all the money when they sell an upgrade online. Don't underestimate how much retailers and suppliers keep for themselves when you pay 100$ in a store.

What you call hate is all about reality and arguments. But all of your, say... love, is all about fanboism and promoting a distortion field.

    • The only reason I want to know where you from is because if you are not from the U.K, then why should you care what we in the U.K do or don't do? Racist I am not, I am fed up with the amount coming over here and feel they can come over here and think we need to support them. Do you know how much it costs this country to support these people coming over here? Even when we give them a place to live it is not good enough. We had a barge that was being used to house immigrants, oh but that was not good enough. A mate said to me at the time, when he was homeless, he would have been happy to live on the barge, instead of ending up sleeping on a bench on the beach. I am not scared to say what my family heritage is, unlike you who is scared to say where they are from or where they live. Father side U.S, mother side Wales, still have family living in the U.S. A mate who sadly died a few years ago, had a load of people from different races recording in his studio, I got on with all of them. Skin colour don't bother me, where they are from don't bother me. Religion don't bother me as long as they don't push it onto me and it is not crazy stuff. I am not religious. But if you are not living in the U.K, then why should you care if we are in the E.U or not? This the problem, too many people poking their noses into where it don't belong. But you believe what you believe, if you think I am racist, then be it, I really do not care. Just grow a pair
    • If he hasn't been able to figure that out, then why is he obsessed with tariffs? Because that's one of the most prominent tools to level the playing field when you have high cost of labor.
    • Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5102558, KB5095615 Setup and Recovery updates by Sayan Sen This past week Microsoft released the newest preview update (C-release) under KB5095093. Alongside those, Microsoft also released new dynamic updates. For those who may not know, dynamic updates bring improvements to the Windows Recovery process in the form of Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) updates, which are also called Safe OS updates. The dynamic updates also affect the Setup file binaries in the form of Setup updates. These Dynamic Update packages are meant to be applied to existing Windows images prior to their deployment. Dynamic Updates also help preserve Language Pack (LP) and Features on Demand (FODs) content during the upgrade process. VBScript, for example, is currently an FOD on Windows 11 24H2. This time both recovery and setup updates were released for Windows 11. The company writes: "KB5095186: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, version 26H1: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.28000.2335. KB5102558: Setup Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to Windows setup binaries or any files that setup uses for feature updates in Windows 11, version 24H2 and Windows 11, version 25H2. KB5095615: Safe OS Dynamic Update for Windows 11, versions 24H2 and 25H2: June 23, 2026 This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE). After installing this update, the WinRE version installed on the device should be 10.0.26100.8737." Microsoft notes that both the Recovery and Setup updates will be downloaded and installed automatically via the Windows Update channel.
