Neowin: A speed bump on the Information Superhighway.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't trust mods with access to prune/clean the database. That's a task reserved for Admins and Developers IMO.

I don't think he means moderators. We have no access to the database.

Although I haven't encountered any speed issues with browsing or posting, I'm hopeful that the upgrade to IPB 3.4 will make things a little faster.

^^ What these guys have said (if the Admins haven't done this already). If IPB is a paid for product, then wouldn't Invision have a responsibility to ensure it is working as designed and identify flaws? I'm aware of the tweaks and additions made by the Admins here to the board, but it shouldn't prevent IPB support from suggesting things that could be at fault.

If IPB is still as widely used as I think it is, they must have the experience from other customers to be able to assist in diagnosing issues such as performance.

Also, I've never noticed problems with loading on the board (or the time taken to post this actually).

Could not agree more that this site and posting to it are totally unbearable and has been for months now, for me!

Only visit here once in the morning and MAYBE once at night, where as I used to visit here MANY times a day.

I've had it take as long as 9 minutes to post once!!

I have seen the speed issue in the forums from time to time but it's nothing to write home about. Besides I don't see why he is complaining, he is receiving this great site for free and if I am not mistaken Neowin is tech and help forum not a Nascar racetrack. If he wants to leave may he have a nice day and a wonderful life wherever he decides to go.

FYI - Forums running just fine for me, the actual browsing and all that seems to load fine......

.... except "Saving post" still kills me it seems when trying to post. Doing it on this post now for this reply and it just gets stuck there. Had to copy the text, refresh the page then paste it then post and it flew right through.

(Windows 8 and IE10).

There's no button to like posts in the mobile view what happened?

Also I get the lag in posting often as well.

there's no button to like posts at all right now

they're going around disabling and enabling things to try and figure everything out

Redmak disabled the reputation system for now.

Edit: I haven't experienced any of the slow loading except for the "saving post" as Shotta mentioned. But at least currently, it's instantaneous.

I don't think it's related to facebook or whatnot unless that's code that runs server side?

I've got (and have had) facebook disconnect for a long time, plus all facebook domains statically resolve to a local network IP with a basic web server that displays an empty page and the site still runs slow randomly.

Woop for like button's return!

IPB has helped us in the past with issues like these. Although I think the current issues are all us and not IPB, why? Because we haven't upgraded IPB for at least a year or more?

I'm also interested to know what can be "pruned" from the database without losing content? I'm pretty sure all logs are already rotated so they don't get huge.

Yeah, that's a bad idea letting me do that! :p

Can anyone on Chrome experiencing issues test these 2 guys out for me?

I have to say I nearly never see load time issues. The worst I've seen is like, 5 seconds to post.

I have all facebook/twitter etc linky things blocked.

For those encountering issues with Chrome, perhaps take a look at:

https://chrome.googl...ibcbegplfmcfigp

https://chrome.googl...akheieifhpjdfeo

Neither app has ever caused my problems, and it's dramatically improved my browsing life (I'm in what's called a Congestion Zone in Australia. We have an 8mbps connection, but the back haul isn't even close to being able to provide that speed for us and those around us.)

I literally never see slow downs and would like to know if it's related. It will help you rule out Facebook as the issue at the very least.

Installed them both but they block the ads too, so disabled them because I was too lazy to find out how to whitelist ads.

I literally never see slow downs...

I've realized that lives of many people would be incomplete if they didn't have a chance to complain about every little thing.

This is especially true when talking about a product or service that doesn't cost them anything.

    • Simple answer is yes, you will still get the Windows updates and as long as browser is up to date, you will be good. Only thing secure boot does is protect you against boot level threats and make it harder to install other OS's. I've been looking into this pretty thoroughly lately myself as wifes computer has secure boot disabled plus my other, older computers that run Linux, don't have secure boot enabled. Have seen all kinds of questions about this on the Linux Mint and MX Linux forums. Just don't suddenly enable secure boot now.

    • Why would any self-respecting intelligent person follow any recommendation by Donald's GOP administration? With almost two years of fabrications, deceit, and blatantly illegal behavior, why believe them now? They had best be gone after the November 2026 election, so we'll wait and see.
    • AltSendme 0.4.1 by Razvan Serea AltSendme is a minimal, cross-platform application designed for fast, secure, and private peer-to-peer file transfers. It allows users to send files or entire directories directly between devices without relying on cloud servers, accounts, or any personal information. Everything is encrypted end-to-end using modern protocols like QUIC and TLS 1.3, ensuring both strong security and low-latency performance. Transfers are verified with BLAKE3 for data integrity, and interrupted downloads automatically resume, making the experience reliable even on unstable connections. You can transfer anything—images, videos, documents, and more. Integrity checks are performed on both ends, so your files are automatically verified for correctness during both sending and receiving. AltSendme works seamlessly across local networks or long-distance links, capable of saturating multi-gigabit connections for extremely fast delivery. With built-in NAT traversal and encrypted relay fallback, it connects devices almost anywhere. The app integrates with the Sendme CLI and will soon support mobile and web platforms. Fully free and open-source, AltSendme offers a lightweight, privacy-first alternative to traditional cloud-based services, removing size limits, upload costs, and unnecessary data exposure. AltSendme 0.4.1 changelog: Release Highlights Self-hosted relays: Run your own iroh relay so transfers don't rely on public infrastructure. Includes a full deployment template in deploy/relay/ with Docker Compose for a VPS and configuration examples for production use. Fly.io support: One-click deploy template for Fly.io, including a quick-start config (fly.dev.toml) for testing without a custom domain, plus production setup with Let's Encrypt and your own hostname. Relay settings UI: New Settings → Network panel to choose how AltSendme connects: automatic public relays, custom self-hosted URLs (with optional auth token), or disabled. Test connections, verify latency, and see live relay status in the footer. Disable relays: Turn off relay servers entirely when you only need same-network transfers (e.g. LAN). Direct connections only. No relay hop required when devices can reach each other. Android graduates from beta: Android is now part of the regular release cycle alongside desktop. APKs ship with each version (universal, arm64, and armv7). • You are mostly right about the ephemeral nature of it. As I mention in the article, if you dont add a second device or take a backup of your account before uninstalling it, then yes you will lose access to your account. That said, in terms of actual user experience when you sync multiple devices your message history carries across and there's also a Saved Messages chat like there is on Telegram to send messages and attachments between your installs. But yh, what you point out are correct and its not trying to emulate Messenger or Telegram.
