IK 47, I'm just curious why you bought a Dell PC and a Intel 64bit CPU opposed to a self build and an AMD Athlon 64?

585862928

In november 2003 I purchased:

Dell 8300

Pentium Four Northwood 2.8Ghz HT 800Mhz FSB, 512KB L2

512MB DDR-RAM

80GB HDD

16x DVD-ROM

Creative SB Audigy 2

Ati 9800XT

1703FP 17" LCD

Logitech MX Duo

4 year warranty

- All this for $2200 taxed, shipped.

In december 2005, my graphics card fan was making noise, so they sent me the machine that I have now. It was a long battle.

Went something like this:

9800XT making noise

1703fp is coming apart at the bottom

1st replacement for 9800xt doesn't let me boot

1st replacement for 1703fp is all scratched up and has dead pixels

2nd replacement for 9800xt runs too hot

2nd replacement for 1703fp has a blotch in the middle

3rd replacement for 1703fp arrives wet and frozen (literally, there was ice on it)

4th replacement for 1703fp has strobing backlight

Dell decides to replace my mobo

I give them hell for sending me bad refurbished parts. so they send me new ones.

a refurbished mobo (redundent), the wrong monitor (wrong) and a pci-e 6800GTO (incompatible) arrive

I give them hell for all this stupidity. They send me as a courtesy 1GB of ram, and a 3.2Ghz presscott.

the presscott is too hot for the 8300 and requires extra cooling. also, the 250W psu is not enough. 315 required.

Cooling and PSU arrive

Problems still occur. I give them hell every day for 2 weeks.

Mr.Manager tells me that they will send me a new computer and a new monitor.

victory.

I was about to build my own computer with an AMD XP processor, but my uncle who at the time worked for dell got me a good deal. This deal was cheaper than building on my own, and it has a warranty. Also, at that time, I didn't know too much about computers.

Thats why I have a dell.

IK47 have you actually ever posted a pic of your workstation?

:o

Yes he has... Several times.

585863431

my mess

:) nice setup man. I might become a mac man myself.

I just checked the price at dell.ca  Right now, this computer computer costs $3458

I have had this computer for less than 2 months, and I know that computers depreciate 30% each year.

heres the math:

30 div 12 = 2.5

2.5 * 2 = 5

3458 * 1.15 = 3977

3977 * 0.95 = 3797

even after 2 months of depreciation, this machine is worth $3797 Canadian.

585862782

i--wha--this math makes no sense..

30 percent divided by 12 months = 1 month's percent of depreciation = 2.5

2.5 * 2 = 2 months worth of depreciation = 5

$3458 * 1.15 gst+pst = $3977 with tax

$3977 * 0.95 = dollar amount computer is worth after tax and 2 months worth of depreciation.

Do you move your iMac round when you need to stick a CD in? or do CD's just squeeze in that gap between the screen and your desk?

Dell is not crap. Dell computers are #1 in value, as you cannot build a computer cheaper than the dell equivilent. Dell Computers also come with good warranties that support you when you need them. I am personally a student and cannot be without my computer for more than one week.

Dells are quiet, dependable and scalable. My computer doesn't use screws except for the PSU.

Granted, dell uses inferior parts and issues refurbished replacement parts, but every company has it's downside.

Even with all the stuff I have been through, Im still going to buy a 2405fpw with full warranty.

i think theres where a lot of independent system builders suffer though, not only with dell but with other OEMs that sacrifice quality for pricing. additionally, just try and name some other major companies that use inferior parts in a product and still stay relatively successful.

That's only true with their lower end, and lower midlevel products. Unless it's a crazy sale, i've never seen a higher end Dell I couldn't build cheaper. Either way, Dell makes a decent system, I'd recommend them to people who need warranty support big time, but as far as tweaking and upgrading :x

In fact, I have one sitting beside me right now, that belongs to my cousins today, found out this morning (while trying to format) that the xp cd was messed, so i used my home oem disc from my other system, turns out newer Dell systems use proprietary XP dics/keys, because I couldn't activiate with the key on their system. I had used this disc on multiple dells before, even my gf's last weekend, nothing. This proprietary stuff is getting out of hand

Truth! dell XPS are very very expensive for very little performance. The only good thing about dell is buying a barebones dimension 4700 for $500 and upging it yourself.

About the key. I think the Dell's are not retail keys but more like VLK. If I remember you don't need to activate your OS when you get a new key. Since you used your retail disc that wasn't going to work. It's possible you can grab the i386 folder if you haven't destroyed the partition.

Dell's can be a good value imo. I dislike their service to some degree though. There aren't many places you can get a 3ghz computer with 1GB ram and a 19" lcd for under 1,000.

I'd build before I'd buy and since a computer lasts me around 4 - 5 years it's not much of a problem for me to spend a little more to put one togethor.

When you buy from Dell who does the money go to? Bit of everywhere really, employees, government, head honcho dude. My local PC Store will match any Dell Price, comes with a warranty, built with quality branded components, and when you phone up you always speak to someone who knows everything as the company only has 3 people. When you buy there your supporting the community, employing local people.

As the comapny is small customer relations are always high as everyone knows everyone and as soon as a computers bought in feeling ill it's all sorted out and given back in 5 minutes time and a very small fee is payed if any parts were needed for the repair.

Stuff Dell! Support small, local, businesses.

I would say 'ma $2' but I need all the money I can get right now :p

    • Works fine here too. About this build, I don't like to download any kind of Windows, from any site except Microsoft. The mod might work, but I don't know what it's inside. Can contain malware, backdoors... Long time ago I've used something like this but reversed - it was 98se with the look and some functionality  of XP. Or, later XP with Vista look. But I made it myself. Not downloaded from obscure sites.
    • Rockstar gives last-gen GTA V players free upgrades tomorrow by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Rockstar is preparing to launch Grand Theft Auto VI later this year, but ahead of that, the company has revealed a new offer for some Grand Theft Auto V owners. It today announced that Xbox One and PlayStation 4 version owners of the 2013-released title will soon be receiving a free upgrade to the current generation version. The studio released the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto V back in 2022, bringing significant upgrades to the original console editions. This included 60 FPS gameplay at up to 4K resolution, as well as major upgrades to textures, draw distance, and audio. Faster load times, ray tracing elements, and HDR support were also added with it. While this new and enhanced version needed a new purchase of the game to jump in, now Rockstar has decided to make it a free upgrade, dropping the $40 price tag entirely on consoles. "Beginning tomorrow, those who own any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions at no additional cost, and experience the best versions of GTA V and GTA Online," said the company in an official blog post. The free upgrade offer will be released tomorrow, June 18, for all Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners of Grand Theft Auto V. Players who will be jumping in on the offer will want to check how to migrate their GTA Online profile from last-generation to current-generation consoles by heading over here. The offer lands ahead of The Kortz Center Heist hitting Grand Theft Auto Online, where players and crews will be tasked with stealing priceless international art from a prestigious gallery in Pacific Bluffs. It doesn't look like Rockstar plans to stop updating its previous game even with Grand Theft Auto VI being on the horizon. The latest title is slated to launch on November 19, 2026, across Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
    • Now comes with a money back guarantee instead of a replacement! Hah
    • Rufus 4.15.2391 Beta by Razvan Serea Rufus is a small utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc. Despite its small size, Rufus provides everything you need! Oh, and Rufus is fast. For instance it's about twice as fast as UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer or Windows 7 USB download tool, on the creation of a Windows 7 USB installation drive from an ISO (with honorable mention to WiNToBootic for managing to keep up). It is also marginally faster on the creation of Linux bootable USBs from ISOs. A non-exhaustive list of Rufus supported ISOs is available here. It can be especially useful for cases where: you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.) you need to work on a system that doesn't have an OS installed you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS you want to run a low-level utility Rufus 4.15.2391 Beta changelog: Improve the guards for using the "silent" option Improve the ability to cancel during write retries Fix unrestricted XML entity expansion and integer overflow in ezxml parser (courtesy of @esadowski4) [GHSA-55r2-34wg-8mv9] Fix "silent" Windows installation failing at 75% in most cases [#2960] Fix a crash during boot when using UEFI:NTFS on Snapdragon X based ARM64 platforms [#2934] Fix the first WUE option always being checked by default [#2965] Fix an infinite loop when using Windows ISOs that contain multiple WIMs Fix "Enable runtime UEFI media validation" checkbox not always being properly enabled Other WUE improvements/fixes for OneDrive removal and username validation (with thanks to @christian8641) [#2984, #2991] Download: Rufus 4.15 Beta | 1.9 MB (Open Source) Links: Rufus Home Page | Project Page @GitHub | Screenshot Get alerted to all of our Software updates on Twitter at @NeowinSoftware
