Galaxy S3 Uploading Unknown Data

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm new here and I hope somebody helps me in my problem. I bought Galaxy S3 a few days ago, my problem is whenever i connect it to the internet it uploads unknown data. Whenever i download something it uploads a great amount of data, maybe equivalent to the amount i'm downloading. I checked it with My Data Manager and it was a program called Download Manager, which means the same program used for my download.

Can you tell me why is it uploading data? and what data is it uploading? please I'm really worried i'm afraid that it's uploading my personal data somewhere, besides it's making my bill really heavy.

I appreciate any help...

Thanks.

littleneutrino Thanks a lot for the reply. So it means it has nothing to do with my personal data?

also the upload is 99% equal to the amount downloaded, the download and upload signs are at the same height in my BitMeter. does it mean my galaxy has something wrong?

Pardon my questions but I'm not used to using net on my phone because I usually download with my laptop and it doesn't upload that much when i download something.

You could have a look in your downloaded apps settings and start disabling each one that has Internet Access in the permissions list, although almost all will have that, disable them 1by1 until you notice a drop in upload use

Ads might be sending info back to their developer for collection usage statistics etc

I tried disabling them while I was downloading and looking at BitMeter but the upload height never came down, it stayed all the way at the same height with the downloading line, it stayed like that until I disabled all my applications :(

I don't know if i have any ads, this is what My Data Manager show:

It looks like it's Download Manager that consumes a lot of data, could it be the app causing the problem?

I downloaded the app you showed but it didn't help me much, this is what it showed:

and by the way, is there a way to detect ads and disable them?

thanks.

If you're rooted you can install something like "AdFree" to kill all ads

Most free apps have ads, the paid apps generally don't

Download manager will show the most data use because that is being used for most data transfers

Looking at the screen from the app I linked you to, there is not much uploading going on at all

EDIT - Just had a thought, there is a setting to backup things like app data and wifi passwords etc to Google Servers, its possible that the backup is causing the upload data to be high

You can disable that in Settings > Backup & Reset

    • Wow, spoken like a true blind hater, you don't even provide arguments. Please, go check my comment above to @seacaptain and you'll find out why what you say doesn't make sense in this context...
    • Get used to this, with AI tooling now uncovering new vulns and getting them exploitable far faster than has ever been possible before software is going to need to be updated far more frequently. Back in the day it may take reseachers weeks or months to do what AI can now do in hours. Once its a threat is discovered it's weaponsized far more quickly, meaning you simply can't be waiting 2, 3, 4 weeks to deploy a patch, it needs to be patched immediately. Going to be interesting handling this in the enterprise space where traditionally patching has been steady, but very staged (and rightly so up until now), that is going to have to change.
    • You don't need to "close all browser sessions constantly" or wait for updates to install. The updates download in the background while you use the browser, without interrupting you, they install automatically the next time you launch the app. And they install very fast (depending on your storage speeds, of course), you have to wait at most 2-3 extra seconds, if any. Seems like you haven't used Edge in a loooooooong time...
