Personally, I would prefer a brick house; mainly because it's far more noise resistant than wood. Insulation can only do so much and wood transfers sound waves very easily as well.

Last I checked, banging against and yelling next to a brick wall cause no sound to pass through.

Wood on the other hand, well, that vibrates the entire structure and passes conversations through like no one's business.

Maybe I just need to find a properly isolated wood house, like you say. Ours is, after all, over 45 years old. (But owned by someone who does home improvement for a living.. only thing keeping us from renovating is the cost involved and the fact that people live here; got no place to stay temporarily while rooms get rebuilt)

Try living in concrete student apartments and tell me it doesn't pass sound.

A proper wood house (you can't properly upgrade an old one if it wasn't built for it) will stop nearly all sound. Meanwhile on a concrete house, the whole house is connected and the sound waves propagate all along the concrete or brick structure.

Actually hitting the wall might cause less sound(more than you'd think though), but conversation, music and movies....

Don't forget that for many months, large parts of the US have extreme cold climates and wood is a good insulator, so that's one reason, even if people have central heating and A/C these days. Ever heard of the phrase stone-cold? :p

Once upon a time it was hard to come by, but now it's pretty well managed, and incredibly cheap.

Wood houses can be built to be incredibly strong, if you spend the money on it. Most people want 2x4 framing because it's fast to put up and it's cheap, and it's easier to work with than balloon framing or post and beam.

There are other issues too, it could be they had a rotting roof, hurricane comes along and blows the roof off, and then the house is done. Wasn't the houses' construction that killed, just bad roof maintenance. Water + wind can cause a lot of issues that wind alone can't.

But! Usually new wood is not as good as old wood. If you look at some of the older houses / boats in the US, the timber that was available to them at the time will probably never again be found on Earth.

Makes sense, here, deforestation is still rampant, and will probably be for the next 50 years I guess..

This is unfortunately increasingly true with every manufactured resource on earth. Hell, it's even true with food crops.

I wonder what it will be like 100 years from now. What natural resources will we have run out of by then? What will global warming have done?

Well, it's a little different, if you want natural crops or livestock, you can raise them in your back yard still, if you have one. If you want a board made of out 300 year old wood, today, you have to go find some magical untapped forest or decide to hold off on your project for 300 years.

It only takes 1 entry point for wind to get into a building or under the roof and if the hurricane is strong enough it won't matter if it's wood or block.

Neh; I'm talking really old stuff, like Einkorn. Crops that are region restricted, not domesticated and not hybridized.

Can't grow them in your backyard, as much as I'd love to.

GM crops are a whole different story entirely.. and a big issue in present time.

The issue isnt about wood but for the retards who continue to build so near to the coast that this keeps happening over and over again. Personally I dont think any insurance company or any federal aid should go to disaster victims if they previously went thru this before in the same area. If they have then they should get nothing because they should not rebuild in a dangerous place yet again.

So you are saying we should abondon NYC? This exact same storm almost happened a few years ago and then it happened this year. Chances are it will happen in the future. You heard it here folks! NYC shouldn't get insurance or government aid from the next "perfect" storm.

The statistical chance of being hit by a tornado is so low that insurance companies bank at the end of the season since everyone with a mortgage is usually required to have home owners insurance.

Same reason that you don't make pure concrete structures in Oklahoma that are expected to be permanent unless you have lots of money for an advanced foundation that can withstand the shifting clay we call the ground. Most building that are more than 20 years old have a cracked foundation, not because of a fault in its creation, but just because of how the ground shifts. You could build brick house for way more money in Oklahoma, that in the end makes no different to a tornado, assuming you were a statistically unlucky person and manage to find your house in a tornado. Or you can build a house that is lighter(wood), thus not needing a solid foundation that has to be fixed every 10 years, and most likely will not see a tornado anyway. People don't realize just how big the United States and the areas that actually get tornado is. Been here 20 years and never seen a single tornado.

So the question to be asked, why build a brick house on a heavy foundation that will crack within 10 years and need fixing which is expensive, plus raising the value of the house so insurance costing more on top of that? Why spend that much money to attempt to be lucky enough to not loose your home from a threat that is very unlikely to ever effect you? Why not save the money on the making the house, the insurance, and allowing you to save tons of money for the off chance you are statistically unlucky?

Been here 32 and only saw 1 and saw the aftereffect of another. They are not as common place as many would believe. Even in what is known as Tornado Alley, people have lived there all their lives and not seen one.

Basically, 200+ mph, or 322 km/h, winds are simply unsurvivable. Loose items will fly right through your brick walls. You will be shredded. And given the incredible cost of attempting to tornado-proof and the high likelihood that even a person who lives in tornado alley will never even see a tornado... it's not worth it. Build a basement and pray. That's all you can really do.

And for hurricanes? Most of the real problems are on the coast where you might see 20-30 foot storm surges. Even a 10 foot storm surge, like Sandy, is going to do extreme damage. Keep in mind that many buildings had their foundations completely washed away.

Chances are it will happen in the future.

Global warming will increase the natural disasters across the world, and also increase sea levels.

So, it's not a chance that it's happening again; it will happen again so long as we don't do something to protect not only the the poles, but also the global atmosphere.

That will most likely only start happening when things get really bad; as humans love to stay ignorant to things until they become a problem.

    • When I think about a network, there are really two aspects, the hardware and the wiring. So here is what I would do for both. Wiring: Use Cat6A for the patch panel and all structured cables (cables installed in walls). Run plenty of Wireless Access Point (WAP) cables, as a general rule, assume a signal can only pass through 2-3 walls and can't pass through a floor (that is conservative, but trust me on this if you want strong WiFi)  Cat6 patch cables are fine for now if you don't plan to run 10gig, those are easy to replace later if needed. Run OS2 single-mode fiber to anywhere you think you may have a server or sub-switch. (yes, single-mode for everything on a small network, don't mess with multimode unless you have entire racks of servers and that minor module cost and power savings will matter). If you really want to future proof, also run fiber to any high density WAP locations, it is likely that WiFi 8 WAPs will push the limits of 10g. Run 6-12 pairs of single-mode fiber between your MDF and the building's MDF, even if you only need 1 or 2 pairs now, those extra pairs will pay off down the road. Hardware: (its easy to say "get all the features incase you need them", so instead of futureproofing, I am going to take approach of suggesting areas worth investing in, and areas you can save money). Don't overspend thinking you need every feature on every port. You don't need 10g on every port, you don't need PoE on every port. Don't overspend on redundancy either, unless you are ready to buy two of everything, don't waste money buying two of some things and not others. Dual power supplies are worthwhile, but probably not HA or multi-path redundancy.  Get 1 "distribution layer" switch that your router/firewall will connect to, your access layer switches. This should be a 10g switch with a combination of copper and SPF ports and should be a fully managed switch. Given that you said it is a small network, I suggest also using that distribution layer switch for servers and WAPs, meaning it will need PoE. Speaking of wireless, get good professional tri-band WAPs, and either turn on the band stirring options, or limit 2.4 to an IoT only SSID. This will provide a solid WiFi capable nearly everything but the highest of bandwidth clients...you could even consider skipping wiring workstations depending on usage. Access layer switch for workstations and printers can be cheaper switches, 2.5g is a good sweet spot between price and future proofing, but even 1g is fine for most individual clients (the kind that could probably be fine on WiFi). You can consider saving a little on access layer switches by only getting 1 PoE switch for whatever needs it (remember your WAPs are connecting to the distribution switch, not here), and non-PoE for your workstations, because desk phones are falling out of favor. You can also save money here by not buying managed switches if you don't need them--but really do some soul searching there, if you go this route, then anything that isn't on your workstation VLAN would either need to be connected to the distribution switch, or its own switch. Also, don't feel like you need a fancy fabric stacking switches for your access layer, that is the point of the higher-end distribution layer, to remove the need for things like that at this level. Home Hardware: I'm realizing the above assumed an office setting, if this if for your house and home lab then the above still applies, but you'll probably want everything managed and PoE, just because, but you probably also don't need multiple access layer switches. if your total port count is below 24, just skip separating distribution layer and access layer and just get one nice switch with the features you want. For home use, don't worry about home running every device to the main switch, there is nothing wrong with running sub-switches for your media areas and office, those essentially become your access layer, just look for sub-switches with a 10g uplink so sharing bandwidth isn't an issue.

    • Microsoft finally launches WSL Containers in public preview by David Uzondu Microsoft has announced that WSL containers, a feature that allows developers to run Linux containers natively inside Windows without the need for Docker Desktop, is now available in public preview several weeks after Microsoft previewed it at Build 2026. To use the new container feature, you first have to install the latest pre-release version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux by running a quick update command in your terminal: wsl --update --pre-release After installing, you'd get access to the new Linux container CLI (wslc.exe) and the programmable API. Microsoft said that the CLI has a "familiar format" that matches the toolsets developers already use every day. If you know standard Docker commands, your muscle memory will translate directly to wslc.exe, which even features a built-in alias called container.exe. You can quickly run a full Ubuntu KDE desktop container by exposing ports, or pass your graphics card straight into a machine learning environment to run PyTorch workloads. Passing the --gpus all flag inside the run command instantly links your hardware. The team integrated the API directly into MSBuild and CMake, so developers can define container steps directly in project files. One thing to note about WSL containers is that they don't run in your standard WSL distributions; instead, every application and CLI session spawns its own lightweight Hyper-V utility VM in the background. This basically reduces the chances of one app snooping on the container of another app.
    • Google reportedly limited Meta's Gemini access over limited AI compute by Karthik Mudaliar Google is reportedly limiting Meta's use of its Gemini AI models after Meta tried buying more computing capacity than even Google could supply. According to the Financial Times, Google told Meta in March that it could not provide the full Gemini capacity that Meta had requested. This shortfall even disrupted and delayed some of Meta's internal projects. Due to this, Meta even told its employees internally to use AI tokens more efficiently. Meta wasn't the only one to get hit by this sudden refusal by Google; even other customers were affected. But Meta was hit harder because of its unusually high demand for Google's models. The move from Google makes it evident that companies all over are in limited supply of both infrastructure and compute. Alphabet said in April that Google Cloud revenue grew 63% year-over-year to $20 billion in the first quarter, helped by enterprise AI infrastructure and AI solutions. In pursuit of more compute, Meta had earlier signed a multi-billion-dollar AWS agreement as well as a large AMD GPU deal for AI data centers. But the crunch would be short-lived as both Meta and Google have also ramped up infrastructure investments heavily. Meta said in November that it was committing more than $600 billion in the U.S. by 2028 for AI technology, infrastructure, and workforce expansion. In the first quarter of this year, Meta also raised its expected capital expenditure for 2026 to a range of $125 billion to $145 billion, citing higher component pricing and additional data center costs for future capacity. However, this doesn't make the company immune to the current dependence on outside suppliers. Meta has also spent many years promoting Llama as an open-weight alternative to closed models from Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. But if the reported reliance on Google's Gemini models is severe enough for internal work to get impacted, then it looks like even frontier labs and Big Tech aren't fully self-sufficient.
