Why are most people so ignorant about the nurse's suicide?

Why???Because one stressed out worker breaks privacy laws, feels embarrassed and tops herself?

FYI read my other post she was only the lady who transferred the call. I doubt she broke any law. No because ATTEMPTING TO GET INFORMATION even as a prank out of a HOSPITAL is wrong it wastes their time for one. Nothing to do with the death would you ?prank? the emergency services? Other places sure but please no hospitals. Poor taste.

She didn't hang herself because she felt bad over the call, she did it because the hospital staff most probably gave her enormous amounts of **** about it and treated her like crap.

Of course, the hospital nor it's staff will ever admit to that.

Also, the way the media reported on it was terrible; it was probably very embarrassing for her and it was probably very damaging to her feeling of self-worth. I don't think either the media or the DJs can be blamed, but the media really did lay into her :/

It was on the news that apparently they did phone somewhere 5 times before playing it on air to get permission but no-one responded back to them so they did.

In theory it is fraud (you're claiming to be someone you are not) but it's the same with the go-daddy problem where people were pretending to be other people, due to stress, repetitiveness and other things going on you're not gonna be checking up on security 100% of the time!

Its hard to place blame from the story we've got, hasn't been much coverage across the pond.

To me, Its neither the fault of the radio station its managers, or the switchboard operator. The fault lies in whoever 'gave' them the number to call in the first place... Was it brought to light the number they called? Was it just the general number or a private line? The radio station shouldn't have done this live, if they even did... This should have been pre-recorded then aborted when they actually got through, explained who/what they are and maybe arrange to do a planned prank call to air... To boot it also wasn't a lot of information passed on of the duchess status either, nothing magazine-covering but the actual unravelling of it all.

This whole affair could have been swept under the rug, if the press didn't keep it as a massive front page headline for days. As much as I hate the Daily Mail, somebody posted a brilliant comment which sums up my views perfectly:

I don't get how all suicides are "selfish"... Japanese had Honor suicides, is that selfish? they thought it was more honorable to kill yourself then to surrender... and maybe not everyone is doing it for attention, what about people who are terminally ill and can't take the pain anymore? they are selfish because they should stick out intense pain?

This is for the DJs and the **** reporters who had nothing better to write about than make fool of a hard working woman that dedicates most of her life in taking care of others. I feel worse for the DJ's. They shouldn't have to live with the guilt of causing someone to kill themselves. It was unforeseen that the outcome of the call was going to be death. MOST people don't off themselves when they get pranked on the phone, that's not normal behavior.

For the life of me I can't consider a prank call as funny. They are waisting the time of somebody for a few cheap laughs. Funny when you did it as a teenager, but not funny to make money from them.

Wouldn't want it happening to me, shouldn't be classed as entertainment.

I do see a pattern here. People aren't taking responsibility for anything anymore they just push it onto someone else. They just blame everyone else for their problems. For all we know she was already suicidal, but just waiting for the right reason to kill herself, so someone else can take the blame.

I don't think they can be blamed for her death, but they're certainly not worthy of any pity. They should have at least had the foresight to know that they could get somebody into serious trouble and perhaps lose their jobs.

Releasing private and confidential information about the royal family would clearly be viewed as a serious breach.

Edit: yes, I know that the woman who killed herself simply transferred the call. I'm saying the whole prank was very irresponsible from the get go. Who thinks it's a good idea to prank a hospital? Ridiculous.

If the DJs had prank called any other hospital, pretending to be a random patient's parents and the nurse who took the call committed suicide, it would have barely got onto local news. But because it happened to a nurse attending the royals, then it must be the worst!

Of course taking her own life is a bad thing, and my condolences to the family, however I think the whole situation has been blown out of proportion. Radio DJs have been doing similar pranks for a very, very long time.

Her suicide was an unintended consequence and there are few who consider the DJs directly responsible. However, public broadcast prank calls are an incredibly infantile and exploitative form of entertainment that can be incredibly unpleasant for the recipient. Prank calls should not be broadcast without the permission of those involved, especially when they are targeted at members of the general public rather than celebrities. It was incredibly low for these DJs to target members of the general public and they deserve the criticism they have received.

At the end of the day, these DJs exploited this woman for entertainment and to further their own careers to garner information that the public had no business knowing. And it is disgusting that people here are quick to attack the nurse's character for committing suicide, as few members of the general public ever have to deal with such a huge amount of stress and pressure. Don't forget that 33% of British women have taken / are currently taking antidepressants and if such intense media and professional pressure were to coincide with other significant emotional pressures that it could push a person over the edge. We simply don't know what was going on in her personal life - nor should we know. If it wasn't for these DJs this woman would have likely lived a normal life.

If it was the nurse of a random patient then it wouldn't have been broadcast on public radio, nor would there have been the same level of media scrutiny. It's simply not a comparable situation.
