Your phone rings and caller ID shows an 876 area code. While it appears the call is coming from the US, be cautious with this Jamaican area code. If you do not have friends, relatives, or business associates in Jamaica, there is probably a scammer on the other end of line.

?Anyone receiving an unexpected call from area code 876 should be on high alert,? said James Boffetti, New Hampshire senior assistant attorney general. ?There is a high likelihood that these calls are from scam artists. Unfortunately, these scammers are very persistent and in some cases verbally abusive, threatening to harm victims if they do not send money.?

Joining forces to educate New Hampshire residents about this scam are AARP New Hampshire, FairPoint, New Hampshire Attorney General?s Office, and law enforcement. FairPoint also launched the ?Beware: Scams from Area Code 876? campaign late this spring and created a website with resources to identify and prevent phone scams. Approximately 30,000 calls are made from Jamaica into the United States ? each day ? attempting to defraud American citizens.

Victims are congratulated for winning the Jamaican lottery or a new car and then are directed to send a fee of up to $4,000 to process the lottery winnings.

Victims are told that once the fee is received, money will be wired to their bank account and the car will be delivered to their home.

lol is it just me or should these scams be impossible to fall for??

How clueless are you to get excited "omg I've never done anything with Jamaica but I won the Jamaican lottery NOWAI"

Wait, none of you won the Jamaican lottery? Guess it was just me. YAAAAAAAYYYY!!!! I finally won something! LMFAO!!!! Glad I have caller-id. Scammers are gonna scam. It's in their blood. If someone falls it, I feel bad for them. But remember what P.T. Barnum said: "There's a sucker born every minute!"

My mother-in-law has fallen victim to these scams. She called me one day and informed me that she had won millions of dollars. Later found that someone from Jamaica was scamming her, but by the time I and my wife intervened she had already sent a large amount of cash.

You would think that wouldn't you? I saw this thing on 60 minutes here in AUS a while back and there was this couple who felt compelled to send money to these Nigerian scammers, they actually admit that they know its fake but kept sending money in the off chance they would get something back! Losing like 1/4 of a million dollars

Total idiots who deserve to have all their money fleeced from them if you ask me.

Too true. A fool and his money etc.

Exactly. While I may answer the phone even if I don't recognise the number, if your name doesn't appear on the caller ID I will always be wary of who you are.

Unfortunately, there are ways around caller ID as well. At least the spoofers have no knowledge of the numbers/names needing to appear on caller ID in order to entice one to answer the phone.

Yep, there are and I see spammers doing that all the time. That's why all my friends know I never answer unless I know who it is.

Yea I'm cautious answering unknown callers. If someone I know has ID blocker I tell em don't call.

Same as many people on here. If I don't already know the person or number then I'm wary from the get go.

If my bank, mobile phone company, ISP etc call me with a prior arrangement or an email, I'll always call them back on the number I know. If I can get a direct number off of them, it'll be a pre-checked number.

An old company I worked for used to have all out going call numbers blocked. I used to ignore the calls on purpose and the one day told them flat out that I wouldn't be answering their calls if the number was blocked no matter how much they needed me. They unblocked caller ID damn quick after that.

reminds me of a friends mother who would strip naked at the front door and walk around the house. Hard to talk when carpet is showing....

When will people learn... If you WIN something, legitimately, you do NOT have to send money to get it.... EVER. You might get a check with taxes taken out already, or some sort of tax invoice WITH the prize you won (or later on in the calendar year) but never, ever, EVER will you have to send money in order to collect a legitimately "won" prize. I can't believe people still fall for this.

People are stupid, and they never learn.

If you happen to fall for these scams, and send off money to people you dont know, then you deserve to be taken for a ride and a fool.
