I think this forum should have a shoutbox.

I assume that this forum is invisionpower software from its style right? Most forums have it so I think neowin should too

Liked the site so far though!

:)

PS unsure where to post this... I think there should also be a suggestions sub-forum

While I'm not shooting down the idea, we have a status update section on the right of the main forum index which you can use by updating your status under your member profile. Also, we have an IRC chatroom for people who want speedier conversation. You can find out how to join the IRC server here.

Finally, I don't know if the devs have any plans to put too much work in to our forums at the moment. Not because they're lazy, but because they're working behind the scenes on something...special. At least, that's the word on the block.

However, maybe if it is easy to implement the devs will hear you out and go for the shoutbox idea.

Oh, and you're using the right forum for making suggestions. ;)

People are dying out there and you want a shout box :p

Just use the status thing if you feel you have to shout about something

I was just making a friendly suggestion :)

Some forums have both...it's not the same, but never mind, since I do understand that the staff try their best for the community and they're quite busy ;)

While i understand why some people would want a shout box, there are plenty of alternatives that are already featured in our forum. However, the IRC server i think is the best solution as it is a live chat that is not constantly seen and requires a person to go there at will.

With the load and visitors online count the site constantly has, I'd think the IRC Server is a much better solution, since the Shoutbox would consume a massive amount of resources with CPU time and Database query look up time

How do you access the IRC server?

Also I don't understand how the shoutbox is related to a database...?

I don't understand what you mean. Please clarify.

    • I think every American should have a course in a 'dry sense of humour' at school; and perhaps 'using sarcasm in jest' oh, and also 'the use or irony in humour'.
    • What they really need to do is automatically spell "loses" and "lose" correctly since nobody seems to know how to anymore. Then they blame spellcheck/autocomplete and don't realize autocomplete is just filling in the word for them automatically so it was misspelled in the first place.
    • If someone chooses to continue using SB and therefore goes through the manual intervention in the thread, afterwards the BSOD problem is gone. Whether they then re-enable the task doesn't matter, they're done, though on such machines it might pay to keep it disabled in case the next update (if there is a next) causes the same problem. OTOH, if someone disables SB in the BIOS, the problem is also gone. Incidentally, I noticed that this task exists even on machines that don't support SB. It's just installed across the board...and runs. Doing what on such machines is a little hazy.
