I know that if you want something simple that compares to iMovie for Mac, you can get Movie Maker for Windows. I would never suggest that to anybody because I could rarely complete a film in Movie Maker back in the day because it always froze on me.

Anyway, if you are interested in starting to edit, what I did as a beginner was get a software called Corel Video Studio. It was easy enough for me to get the hang of as well as do the things I wanted it to do. Eventually I upgraded to the Final Cut Pro studio and Premiere Pro from Adobe. But Corel was a very nice piece of equipment for me starting out.

I wouldn't recommend Sony Vegas, it's not user friendly. It's really hard to deal with. I always love my Final Cup Pro, but it's much too advance for anyone just starting out in the editing world. If you plan on using any advance software Final Cut Pro is the way to go because of the ease of access and tools. It's the fastest thing I've ever edited on and I've used hundreds of video softwares.

I would go with Corel VideoStudio X5 - screen recording, HTML5 support, DVD & BR authoring plus all manner of effects, filters and toys. Lots of room to grow & intuitive, and more frequent feature enhancement & bug swat patches than Adobe does for Premiere Elements.

I agree: Sony Vegas is a mess.

VideoStudio tutorials are on both Vimeo and YouTube. This overview should give you a feel for it.

    • For some reason when EU forced Microsoft to allow users to change the default browser and search provider in Windows (also no ads for Office and the likes) - it was good. But when it comes to Apple - then it's bad. BTW, Apple would have gone out of business if Microsoft wasn't pressed by US government several decades ago. 😉
    • I understand Microsoft's intention here, at least I think I do. There have been so many printer driver related problems over the years due to OEM printer drivers not be compatible with the latest Windows update, that Microsoft wants to eliminate those by controlling the printer driver updates and keeping them compatible with the latest Windows update. That is okay as far it goes, but what it can do is put limitations on printers that wouldn't be there with OEM drivers since the OEM printer drivers are not universal drivers. It's a tradeoff and one can only hope it doesn't turn all Windows printers into $69 Brother printers.
