Very high RAM usage after Battlefield 3

Recommended Posts

Not to play BF3, just to see if your RAM use is back to normal idling without running anything

Possible a driver is doing it and safe mode only loads essential drivers, not 3rd party ones

It's fine if I restart now, it's just puzzling me why Battlefield is causing it to rise and stick at this :/

Driver related memory consumption is NOT shown in the Task Manager.

It must be something driver related, but I don't know why it doesn't happen on some other games though, unless it's a strange Battlefield bug :/

It's not 'dying' RAM, go into your Device Manager and disable the 'Turn off Write Cache buffer flushing on device'. I've had this issue before and it came down to Windows holding all the most used files (which are huge) in the memory. :)

Is this a Win 8 only thing? or did you miss out which device to disable it on ?

...I'm on Device Manager, but where do I find that option? :/

It is called trashing. He ran out of memory and now Windows is raping his hard drive.

His Commited amount is 10GB!

I want to see the Control Panel\System and Security\System

(In Explorer, Right Click On "Computer", Select "Properties")

Under "System"

the installed RAM and the Usable Amount.

How to clean boot

WINKEY+R

Type in "MSCONFIG"

Go to Services tab

Check "Hide all Microsoft Services"

Click "Disable All"

In task manager,

disable all things that start up

reboot

There's way too many 3rd party apps running in the background and minimized to troubleshot this properly.

Yep, agreed, but for disk usage to be 51% there is either a disk problem, or because he is running out of physical RAM, its fallen back on the pagefile

Or he his transferring files during screenshots

Yep, I just replied as you did :)

Curious if his page file is even turned on, was that mentioned by him yet?

His Committed is 10GB. That number would not go above 4GB if there is no page file.

I am now more or less convinced he just need to clean boot - looking at the task manager, no indication of a driver problem.

Just got a BSOD and my connection keeps going which is why I'm not responding. My blue screen gave an error DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION. I haven't looked that up yet, after this reply I will.

I took some screenshots of when I closed everything which are below. My memory usage now though is normal because I restarted and probably won't be a problem again until I try and go on Battlefield (or another intensive game).

My paging files are on, I've chosen to let Windows decide what to do though because I ran into other issues when I did it manually.

If you received a blue screen error, or stop code, the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from data loss. A hardware device, its driver, or related software might have caused this error.

I know, it's just strange that it hasn't done this before and it's done it a couple of times in the last few days :/

In use RAM should be .6 to 1.2 GB on a normal system

Yeah, mine's on 1.2GB now with all of my normal things loaded. Screenie:

It must be a driver issue then. Never buying an AMD GPU again, far too buggy.

Hardware can die at any time, and drivers can become corrupt too

Have you tried clean installing all major drivers? Chipset / GPU / Audio / Network ?

Yup, that's what mine was set to automatically - I don't believe I've changed it in the past.

I think he was saying to disable that check box :)

This is exactly what I'm saying, the issue is that people enable this option when they have HDD's to help 'speed things up'.

    • OpenAI and Broadcom unveil Jalapeño, a new AI chip built for LLM inference by Pradeep Viswanathan Image by OpenAI Thanks to the exponential growth of ChatGPT and other LLM-based applications, NVIDIA has grown from a $200 billion company into the first public company to reach a $5 trillion market cap. Even though hyperscalers such as Google and Amazon have their own mature AI accelerators, NVIDIA still dominates the AI infrastructure market with multiple generations of GPUs. Microsoft, OpenAI, and Meta remain among NVIDIA’s largest customers, while Google and Amazon continue to be significant NVIDIA customers as they serve AI workloads for customers on their cloud platforms. Today, OpenAI and Broadcom announced Jalapeño, OpenAI’s first custom “Intelligence Processor” designed specifically for large language model inference. The new chip is the first product from a multi-generation compute platform being developed by OpenAI. OpenAI highlighted that Jalapeño was built from the ground up for current and future LLM workloads, rather than being a general-purpose accelerator adapted for AI. Despite heavy competition from Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and others, ChatGPT remains the most used AI platform in the world. OpenAI mentioned that it leveraged its knowledge of how its models and products run at scale, including ChatGPT, Codex, the API, and future agentic AI systems, to design this new chipset. Its chip architecture reduces data movement while balancing compute, memory, and networking resources. Jalapeño will be deployed in production systems starting in late 2026; however, engineering samples are already running machine learning workloads in OpenAI’s labs at production target frequency and power. According to its internal testing, OpenAI claims this chip can deliver “substantially better” performance per watt, and a detailed technical report is expected in the coming months. While OpenAI designed the chip, Broadcom handled silicon implementation and networking technologies, including Tomahawk networking silicon, and Celestica is assisting with board, rack, and system-level integration. OpenAI pointed out that Jalapeño went from initial design to manufacturing tape-out in just nine months, which it claims is the fastest ASIC development cycle achieved for a high-performance advanced semiconductor. The company attributed the speed of development to its own LLMs, which were used during the chip design and optimization process. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan stated that the company's plan is to deploy the Jalapeño platform at a gigawatt scale with Microsoft and other partners starting in 2026. With Jalapeño, OpenAI joins Google, Microsoft, and Amazon to become a full-stack AI player. The company already develops models and products, and is now moving deeper into infrastructure, including chips, kernels, networking, scheduling, and deployment systems.

    • Regarding the AI photo, I LOVE AI in that regard, you ask it what you want and it gives you a lovey photo in under a minute, that would taken me an hour to make in photoshop and it wouldn't have looked nearly as good. 2 nights ago I spent a couple hours collaborating with AI.  I did not say write me an article. I would write one or 2  paragraphs, then I would ask it to clean it up so it read better but still keeps the information I was trying to convey.  Rinse repeat.
