l77Il7H
no matter what those distro say, i am not going to believe them anymore! Linux is NOT as easy as Windows! OMG, this OS is soooooo confusing! i can't even install a single program yet, i hate their RPM's! I am not a computer incompetant, so don't say that i don't know crap. no wonder Windows will always succeed over linux. i htink it's great for server but defintely not for home user. i have never been through a OS that is so frustrating! although i love their GUI, it's so pretty and they have lots of neat stuff. only if it was really as easy as Windows. Hypercube
I fail to see what the issue is. Everything is just like windows, perhaps with slightly more console use. RPM's should make installing programs rather simple, it would help greatly if you explained what problems you are having. Hypercube
It is still an OS one would need to be familiar with though, it is not being phased out entirely. If you want to slowly ease into it, try working on a bootable environment such as Knoppix and save your settings on a floppy / memory key. VGVL
The first time I tried to use Linux I installed Mandrake 7.2, and it was hell. I ended up going back to XP. A couple of months later I decided to give SuSE 8.2 a chance, and here I am, still using it. VGVL
I personally find the GUI to be very messy and have a very unpolished feel to it. The GUI is as nice or as messy as you want it to be. Right now I feel that my Linux box looks better than the average machine running XP. It just takes some time to get the GUI working just how you like it. threetonesun
The Linux GUI is infinitely better than a Windows one, since you can make a Linux GUI look like pretty much anything you want. Just consider the sheer number of Linux GUIs ... Also, if you install Redhat 9 and can't figure out how to do anything you would do in Windows (save playing games), maybe computers just aren't for you. slapnuts_ox
when i first started using linux 3 years ago I was very confused and had no clue what I was doing. I was constantly asking questions from people and posting in forums. I loved the look and feel but had no idea how to do anything else. Now Im running a Fedora Beta on my desktop and debian on my server. Linux in my opinion is very easy to use.....its just different. It is like the first time you used windows, you had no idea what you were doing and it took a while for you to get comfortable with it. Same concept with linux. I recomend going to rpmfind.net and getting apt-get for rpm and synaptic. Install those by opening a command line and typing rpm -ivh apt-get-xxxxx.rpm synaptic-xxxxx.rpm where xxxxx is whatever the package version is. Once its installed you just open up synaptic from your menu and its a graphical updater and automatically will resolve dependancies for you. Just give linux a chance before you trash it and by I chance I mean a good week or so. akassebaum
I have used LINUX for a couple of times. I don't like it either... Nothing is compatible. I can't use the DVD player software. The RPM's are dependent on other RPMs. Then you have to look for everything. I love windows because it just works whenever you want it. Sure there are a lot of viruses, but it is because of hacker's jealousy of MICROSOFTS global dominance... harleydog
As with anything, the more you use it, the easier it gets. I have one machine that I keep some flavor of Linux (currently RH9) and I still get flustrated with some things in Linux. The learning curve is a little more steep than with Windows, but, if you choose, stay with it for a while, and it will start to come around. Linux has come a long ways over the past few years. slapnuts_ox
I can't use the DVD player software. The RPM's are dependent on other RPMs. Then you have to look for everything thats funny ive been using my dvd drive for a while now and it works fine. I recomend either Totem or Mplayer for your dvd needs. Just use apt-get for rpm and it will solve all those problems. They give repositories where packages are located and can be downloaded from automatically so you do no searching at all. edit: oh almost forgot.....for desktop i like redhat/fedora and for servers I like debian. If your looking for a distro to try fedora 1.0 will be released in a few days...either wed or thu so give that a shot. DrunkenMaster
Some stuff doesn't apply but if you really want to learn Linux: Get the FREEBSD handbook. Its the *best* Unix/Linux book out there. IMO. I still use it for reference. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/113158-linux-is-not-easy/#findComment-1330234 Share on other sites
sethrd
For DVDs, use Ogle, and make sure that you have your DVD-ROM in /etc/fstab As for RPMs, get a real distro, like Debian, Slackware, Gentoo, or even a BSD distro. apt-get and emerge owns RPMs. As for the GUI being messy, that has nothing to do with *nix. That is all on you man. You can change anything you want. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Sure, you will be called a newb. All you have to do is say, "Hey, we all start somewhere."
