Google to build ?1bn UK headquarters at London's King's Cross

Google has completed a ?1bn property deal to move its UK headquarters to a brownfield site in London's King's Cross area.

The US technology giant has purchased a 2.4 acre site between King's Cross and St Pancras stations and plans to build a seven and 11 storey complex due to be complete in 2016.

Google already has two central London offices ? one in Victoria and one on St Giles High Street ? from where staff are expected to be relocated.

The move forms part of the regeneration of the King's Cross area following the opening of the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras in 2007.

Organisations that have moved into the area since then include Guardian News & Media, publisher of MediaGuardian, and art college Central St Martin's.

Google's purchase mirrors its property strategy in Dublin, where it bought a building outright for 2,000 staff in 2011.

Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and yes Google all use legal procedures to lower taxes, it makes the UK attractive for foreign businesses to invest.

Of course it's attractive, because they can pay a lower rate of tax than businesses that operate exclusively in the UK. The thing is, if these companies earn money from the UK - which they all do - then they should pay the correct amount of tax. Instead they use ridiculous accounting practices, funnelling their money through several fake shells - in Ireland, Bermuda, etc - and create phoney licensing terms to hide their profits.

If they can make money in the UK then they should pay taxes in the UK. If not then I'm sure there are plenty of other businesses that would love to take their place and pay their taxes.

Maybe it is YOU that works for the dailyfail, people pay tax and companies are meant to too, for things like the NHS, etc.

If all corporations avoided paying tax, there'd be even LESS tax money collected this less NHS, less council services, etc.

You went from Google, (1 company) to "all companies" so fast. Is that anger and generalization? Or is it a trend to pick on every company now after the Starbucks incident which was mainly "sold" to the world by DailyMail? I'm not saying it's fair, but seeing the same complaint over and over like it's the 1 thing that can save the planet.. is quite annoying.

Because they're creating jobs they can opt-out of paying taxes? Yeah, doesn't work like that.

It's very much a concern to every Briton that every company pays their fair share for operating in the country. If these large companies such as Google, Amazon, eBay, Apple, Starbucks can opt-out of tax then it gives them a distinct advantage over the smaller companies who do the right thing and pay their taxes.

I also know that it's changed where I'd buy things from, and try harder to support smaller companies who do the right thing rather than resorting to loopholes to save them paying a few million on billions of profits.

And tax money doesn't go the the Queen so haven't a clue what you're on about there.
