WASHINGTON (AP) ? The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch, was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

Nice how everyone is consider a theorist :rolleyes: Well I call BS how everything is suicide this, suicide that, and we eat it all up.

that's normally how cowards die. He broke the law, got scared and took his life /story

Give me a break! cowards!? Ive done my share of 'stuff'' and I been taking risk for the past 2 years and if I knew something was to happen I would just keep low as much as possible. I dont see how people result to suicide as their first choice.

He was subjected to trumped up charges and then they tried to bully him into a confession because they had no way of making them stick in court. The aggressive corporate bullying of the US is partly to blame for Aaron's death, although how Anonymous think they're serving his cause by defacing a website is beyond me. If they really want to help, instead of destruction maybe they should use their clout to try and get money for the legal costs of Aaron's family?

who would get scared ... that kind of infamy is nothing to be frightened of nor would he get punished that badly ... they would want his help

Yeah, people who leak secret documents are in big demands in corporate America... think about it.

even the scenario you allude to, the hiring of hackers after they get caught is an old practice, not really being done any more. because frankly they get better hackers with actual morals and ethics from the schools and universities today where they get trained for that kind of stuff. Hacking isn't what it used to be 10+ years ago.

      Depends on what you need. Might be a bit clearer on what you plan to do with it. Sort of a waste if you get the newest and greatest, but don't know how to use it.
