Has Neowin hit a all time low? If so, one day boycott

Recommended Posts

I tend to agree on this. When I first joined neowin, I don't believe there was a Frontpage yet, but when it first was out, it felt sort of similar to Gizmodo and other tech sites, posting actual Tech news. Neowin was obviously more Microsoft focused. Today there still is the Tech news, sometimes a little late, but a lot less than there used to be. I almost feel that the Front Page should contain the Tech news, with a sub tab for opinions, kind of like News papers. These days I see a lot more and up to date Tech news/Microsoft news from other sites, where Neowin lags behind in some areas.

Neowin is a Microsoft sponsored site now. Everything is targeted towards how wonderful Microsoft products are. I lost faith in Neowin the way they promoted Windows 8 on the site. I still believe Windows 8 is ****. And yes the site has gone down hill.

OP is probably the same person that if he's edited in any way cries about freedom of speech.

What's the correct term? Freedom of speech as long as I agree with it?

Don't let us stop you from leaving.

People saying this is a windows 8 site, are you dillusional?? Some kid wrote "Who is stupid enough to use windows phone 8". I commented, "There's no other option, I'm not using iphone or android". He got nothing I got a 10 day ban. Do you see me making polls or calling for a boycott? No. I just try to say more nice things about google and android to avoid being removed for good. lol

We should all be working together to figure out why when I and other users here hit Post sometimes it hangs forever without actually posting unless you refresh, copy/paste and hit post again.

Having been around Neowin since the Windows XP beta coverage I can't say that the Windows 8 coverage all that different. However, since Microsoft has started advertising / contributing to the site I have seen disproportionately positive coverage of Microsoft products - notably Bing, Windows Phone / Nokia and the Surface. For instance, Nokia's Lumia range of phones received dramatically disproportionate coverage to that of Samsung's Galaxy phones considering their market influence and sales figures; it was very similar with the Surface. And nearly all of it relates to a single member of staff.

There's no point complaining that the focus of the news page is Microsoft-related on a site that's dedicated to MIcrosoft-related news. If you want Android news then there are plenty of Android-focused sites and there are also plenty of sites that focus on general technology news.

Having said all that, I don't think creating Apple flamewars is particularly useful (or relevant to the site) and I don't think "reporters" should be able to post topics that break forum rules.

I've noticed that this community has become a lot hate filled. The non-stop Apple bashing is getting old. And if you say anything bad about Windows 8, people literally call you stupid for not liking it. I've seen threads and threads about how one company is the devil, and then the same people in that thread call people idiots and stupid for not loving whatever product or device they use.

I've been here for a very long time, and things have changed, some good, some bad. But right now I don't like coming to the site as much as I used to because of all the flaming and bashing that goes on here. it FEELS like if you dont use an Android or Win8 phone, while running Windows 8 on your computer, you might as well not come here unless you have a thick skin. It's a Windows favored site, but that doesn't mean I can't say, "Windows 8 doesn't seem that great" without getting slammed by everyone, and seeing nothing being done about it.

IMO, this should move closer to a tech site, not a "we love everything Windows" site.

Unfortunately the writers have a different set of rules than the users, where you would expect them to set a high example they do not and they are allowed to break them and call you and i idiots but, if we called them idiots that would be breaking the forum rules because your not allowed to insult a member of staff or other forum users.

infact here is the link where i said something similar to what your saying they should follow the rules: https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1106323-editorial-news-calls-quite-a-lot-of-people-idiots/page__view__findpost__p__595191277

And here is what the "News" editor said which basically said we dont follow the community rules: https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1106323-editorial-news-calls-quite-a-lot-of-people-idiots/page__view__findpost__p__595191625

The weekend poll is beyond ludicrous. Both title and poll options are pure flamebait. Make the options more differentiated and change the title. What were you thinking, Scorpus?

The community as a whole needs to stop with the permanent mudslinging coming from all camps and learn to live and let live. More and more long-term members have left the site or are thinking about leaving - myself included - because it's becoming too much.

But Neowin isn't a "Microsoft-related" site, otherwise you wouldn't have articles about Apple, Google, Anonymous, Facebook, etc. The focus shifted to general tech a long time ago. Also, even if the site did focus primarily on Microsoft products that doesn't mean there shouldn't be any objectivity. It's perfectly legitimate to complain about an overt pro-Microsoft bias.

What are your thoughts on the one about Microsoft? I think I saw one about "do you hate Microsoft". Is that one okay, while the one about Apple is bad? Geeze, stop being so sensitive and offended about stupid stuff.

It still amazes me the way humans will totally ignore important things going on, but will flip out about trivial, stupid things.

No one's flipping out, its a forum for discussion and we're discussing. I also oppose any sort of poll that has the same tone.

Why boycott Neowin when it allows you to do what you just did. Post "your" opinion.

News post does seem a bit immature. There's no room for discussion except immature posts where people take this kind of thing personally. No need for a boycott neither.

At least if there was a post like "do you dislike using Linux, discuss" then at least there is opportunists for people to learn new things or be corrected etc.

There's far more to computing than Microsoft & Apple. They're both reported on far too much generally in media anyway IMO.

True, more or less every post is Apple V MS you never see Linux V ?

I know a few of my friends are linux fans, i should really try it out again at some point. Then again i need to learn apple because my dad got that stupid mac and asks me how to do things lol

I've been visiting this site on and off for probably the best part of 10 years.

Journalism has never been it's strong point, in fact for the vast majority of the time it's been downright awful. I don't see that the particular poll on the front page is any worse than some other stinkers that have been posted there over the years.

I would like to thank everyone who posted an intelligent response to the question/poll. You guys are the ones that make this community special.

Post was crap and only further drives a wedge between the community. Pure troll bait. While there has always been a focus on MS, other companies never were negatively portrayed on the front page.

Things have certainly changed here and no doubt a lot of members will take a negative view on that "poll". You may be increasing hits with these types of posts, but doing so draws the fanboy types and only continues to detract from the member quality here, which to be honest can't get much lower. Pushing members away is never the job of an editor. You should removed and replaced with someone who cares more about actual content vs troll articles used as a ruse to get hits.

Follow suit then.

Why shouldn't the author of that article leave?

No Personal Attacks or Retaliation

Personal attacks such as instigating "flame bait", verbal abuse, mocking or sexist remarks of members in posts are not tolerated at Neowin. Such posts will be deleted on sight or moderated accordingly.

As above, if you are a long standing member, act like one. Lead by example and assist other newer members rather than attacking them. Members that reply to posts simply to instigate argument will be warned / suspended from forum areas.

I think its sad what has happen to the community.

    • A different thing with Russia. When you say is it better, depends on things. It is better that we don't have the E.U making rules and laws that have nothing to do with them. Is the trading part better? No, that is really mucked up, but then we knew that was going to happen and we would have make agreements, like we do with other parts of the world. Freedom of movement is certainly better, but could be improved, we still need more control over our borders. do you live in the U.K?
    • So what am I quoting from them? I never listened to what Farage or his cronies said. I wanted the U.K to leave the E.u years before the referendum and it had nothing to do with Farage and his cronies. So what country do you live in? Did we work much better together? We were always at logger heads with the E.U because we disagreed with them so much. Maggie was always on at them. I would have thought the E.U was glad to get rid of us as we stopped the integration or made it a two tier. Now without us they can integrate more. I would not have voted out if it was just a trading block and we can still work together on somethings.

    • Apple reportedly looks to blacklisted Chinese memory chips as RAM prices climb by Karthik Mudaliar Image via Apple Apple is reportedly trying to get a clearance from the Trump administration to buy memory from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) to get some relief from soaring DRAM prices. As per a report by the Financial Times, Apple approached the Commerce Department more than a month ago and also spoke to other officials and allies in Washington. For starters, CXMT is a company that's already been placed on the Pentagon's list of Chinese military companies. The Chinese company is the country's top DRAM maker. For Apple, the timing is certainly awkward but not surprising. Tim Cook had recently warned that Apple would have to raise prices because AI companies are buying up large amounts of memory for data centers, and just like that, Apple raised MacBook and iPad prices. Micron also recently revealed that customers have committed billions of dollars to secure memory supply years in advance, which shows us how aggressive securing infrastructure has become. This gives suppliers such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron more leverage, while pushing hardware makers to look for alternatives. CXMT is one of those alternatives, but not the simplest one. Apple has spent many years trying to diversify parts of its supply chain away from China, especially for final assembly, while still depending heavily on Chinese manufacturing and suppliers. Even domestic brands from China are moving towards CXMT and YMTC instead of relying on Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix. For Apple, though, it would invite more scrutiny than local Chinese companies. For now, this is more like a lobbying effort rather than a confirmed supply deal. There's no official statement from either of the parties. What is clearer, though, is the pressure behind such a request. AI demand has certainly made hardware a bottleneck, and companies are trying everything they can to bring things back to normal, even if that means making politically sensitive choices.
