That is correct, articles require approval by the Editors before they go to the front page. This is to stop the Reporters posting random drivel like 'HOLY GUACAMOLE MICROSOFT EMPLOYEE SPOTTED WITH AN IPAD STOP THE PRESSES' :p

I think John posted one of these.. :p

Really who gives that much of a **** about some poll....? Ignore it and get on with your life. Put some of that passion into something productive and STFU.

Let people vent that wanna get thier **** out about a software company.

Actually polls like these help the companies out... they see them... they can improve.

if people are afraid of speaking thier minds about company issues then companies will continue to get worse and we all take it up the ass.

I encourage polls like this and nobody should be forced to delete those.

It really wasn't that big of a deal, maybe the term "hate" could have been replaced with "dislike" but other then that anyone who took offense to the story personally either must have a first name of Apple and thought it was about them or needs to take a serious vacation from the internet and do some soul-searching.....

I couldn't care less about Apple but I objected to the poll because it was pointless flamebait. The whole episode was pretty shoddy and is symptomatic of wider problems with this site. You guys need to get your house in order.

It is sad some members deemed this response necessary. I had no problem with the poll personally, and actually had a bit more of an issue with it being removed.

Had it been a poll saying:

Do you hate Google?

Do you hate Microsoft?

Do you hate NVIDIA?

Really anything else, the backlash wouldn't have been nearly as severe. Heck, we have already had many polls and official discussions on Microsoft after Windows 8, including a poll basically asking if you hate it. But because it was Apple, the backlash came out. It was a completely reasonable poll, with some reasonable and good responses. Apple "fans" are always on the constant defensive and feel the need to lash out or justify the hate towards the product of their choice. Most people truly don't care, but Apple garners the most hate because of their business practices that clearly do harm the industry, so it was a completely valid poll and question to be asked, and discussed. And it was well discussed amongst the commenters.

Regardless, I don't think you should have removed it, or stood down from your position on it. It was completely in-bounds and reasonable and a few members got hurt about it, because that is simply how Apple fans react. It isn't some new behavior, nor unknown, and I refuse to be politically correct on this, because some people just need to grow up. Now, you should have known this was going to happen and maybe had the editorial prepared much sooner to combat the initial response and let it die down.

Other than that, I try to stay out of this stuff, simply because it isn't worth arguing over.

I think it was a perfectly honest question/poll, while as I said earlier the "hate" could have changed to "dislike". I wouldn't call something flame-bait just because you don't agree with it.

(Y) Thanks for clearing this us for those who did not look at this in the long term sense.

Choosing your side in a flame war between companies is plain stupid. Heck, even siding with a company just because they're *insert any giant corp here* is pathetic. These discussions should be pulling us closer not pushing us apart!

Why can't the immature people on the internet just disappear from the WWW's and leave us adults be...

It seems to me that you are the one bringing up flame wars.

It's unfortunate that some people felt offended by your article. When I loaded up Neowin today, I saw the article and thought nothing of it. I figured it was just a simple yes or no poll. And I thought it was weird that there were a couple of threads about the article. In this day and age though, I guess you have to be "politically correct". Hate is a strong word but even so, it shouldn't affect people negatively. Ignoring the negative connotation, hate and dislike are very similar words. A lot of people use the word lightly nowadays and I'm guessing that's why it was used.

As for those that threatened to leave or actually left, that too is unfortunate. But people need to grow some thicker skin. This is the Internet. People will disagree with you, people will troll you, and people may or may not hurt your feelings. The key is to not let it get under your skin.

I think it was a perfectly honest question/poll, while as I said earlier the "hate" could have changed to "dislike". I wouldn't call something flame-bait just because you don't agree with it.

It's flamebait because of the wording, the lack of serious options and the lack of any useful context and explanation. It's now seems that Scorpus was deliberately trying to generate fanboy anger so he could write an article about it but nobody knew that at the time. There's nothing honest about trying to start a fanboy argument on a slow news day and it reflects badly on Scorpus and the other staff here.

The silly thing is, the whole exercise was completely unnecessary. There are more than enough fanboy arguments on this site as it is so he didn't have to look too far to find a subject for his article.

I WILL be linked to members who might have left just due to that front page poll and hence I'll throw in my hat into this thread.

I did not leave due to the poll, but the way staff came across in this instance (granted this thread was actually a shining example of how to react to such things, no sarcasm) and a bunch more, also due to front page news quality in general and the community (partly).

I've long been thinking about leaving and today's discussion actually brought up those thoughts again on a Sunday with not much to do so I took my time to think about it and I'm not leaving without shedding a tear, because this community can be so much much more than what it sadly can also be.

I'm not going to a community I don't feel welcome at anymore, so I'm packing my stuff and leave.

I might come back again sometime, but as things stand now, I won't.

I've also received a great response by Barney, probably one of the best staff members around and he's sad to see me go.

I've noticed those who said they are happy to see me go and those who are not happy about it.

I hope Neowin gets back on track again, 2 years ago this was still a glorious place and I wouldn't have thought about leaving.

I really enjoyed my stay and maybe one day I'll come back, until then I'm going to invest the time into offline life.

Maybe people dont get it, but us Apple users are getting quite tired that people get high fives for trolling our threads. We have as much right as any to ask for help or share tips about our tools. I personally dont care if people like a company or not. I dont love apple, I dont care for it as a company, I just like their computer designs and quite frankly I have all the right to spend my money in what I like. Why should people take that against any of us?

I wouldnt have a problem with polls like these if I knew that people would participate in a civil manner. But Neowin is not the case. It's a constant back and forth about e-penis size and brand loyalty (seriously, is there anything more idiotic than this?).

Computers are tools, nothing more. We threat computer brands as political parties.

And the same goes to those apple users who brag about their computers and feel superior to everyone else. Go die in an alley! It's because people like you that this started.

FFS, I just want a civil and mature community.

Flamebait?

I don't think it even comes close to be a flamebait actually.

I think the poll should have stayed, because if someone hates Apple, then they have a reason for it and they should be allowed to tell their reason why they hate Apple.

I use alot of Samsung products and and love Samsung for what they are and for what they are making.

Would i care if Neowin had made a 'Do you hate Samsung' poll?

Nope, because it won't make me to change my view on Samsung at all, even if 99.99999999% of all users here would hate Samsung and give a reason for it.

I'm all in for letting everyone have the chance to tell their reasons why they hate Apple and then later Neowin can put up a poll asking if you hate Microsoft. Because again, i gives a damn about what you think about Microsoft, or Samsung for that matter.

So, i would actually put back the 'Do you hate Apple' poll again tbfh.

It's now seems that Scorpus was deliberately trying to generate fanboy anger so he could write an article about it but nobody knew that at the time.

So, it means that it's Scorpus fault that some fanboys can't shut up and just accept that someone have reasons to hate Apple?

If someone asks me if i hate Apple and say yes, then they might wonder on why i hate Apple. I will then give them all my detailed explanations on why i hate Apple. And if someone can't accept that someone hates Apple then, then it's not the OP's or the guy who are asking if we hate Apple's fault. Then it's the crybabies who can't tolerate that their loved company gets some negative feedbacks with good reasons behind it.

By the way Scorpus, rather than use the community as guinea pigs it might have been easier if you'd just been up front about this and asked people for their opinions about fanboyism. You might have received some intelligent, considered responses without losing members or having to suggest that people should leave.

As you may be aware, yesterday/today I posted a poll on the front page asking people whether they "hated Apple". Unfortunately this created some backlash among the community (read here), and I feel that it's appropriate for me to respond.

When I saw the post in the front page, I knew that was what the comments were going to be like. I didnt make a comment or read any responses. And honestly, with all the immature posts and comments going happening on Neowin, not sure when a topic/poll like this would of been posted. Thought it would of been obvious the type of responses that would of been posted.

Not blaming you as you and others should be able to post intelligent mature posts and have the same of comments in return. It is ok to post your opinions, just be mature about it.

I for one am going to miss you and a few others. I agree that this site has gone from bad to worse. I'll more then likely be out the door behind you. I know I'm one of the ones who are also not welcome here. So I will probably be tossed out on my ear.

I agree with you sanctified. I don't use Mac, but I honestly don't use Windows much anymore. I like Linux. Linux users end up getting bashed a lot also. Not like Mac users though. Y'all get it far worse. Which is a shame that anyone gets bashed. It's a freakin OS people. Get a grip.

But it's the thing to do. Bash, bash and bash some more. Get bashed long enough and people tend to fight or flee. I for one am tired of fighting.

It makes me laugh, members defend free speech, the right to carry arms, etc etc, but the second Apple is in danger of being knocked off their high horse it's a completely different story

Poll should have remained
