Dollar General Clerk charged with spanking customer's child with belt

It is the job of parents to discipline their children, not strangers.

No its not, its the governments job. Haven't you paid attention to the news lately? Disciplining your child is practically against the law in the US. The only people that can possibly raise our children right is the government. /s

There's simply no way to draw the line, as when does a "spanking" become assault?

The line is well defined in law. Touch the child and its assault. There is no grey area.

As they say, it takes a village.

It is the job of parents to discipline their children, not strangers - even then it should never be done with an implement like a belt. I don't think she'd appreciate somebody disciplining her for stepping out of line. Some people shouldn't be allowed out in public.

If more kids were spanked with belts, we'd have a lot less disrespectful screaming ****ers running around.

It's simply not possible to draw the line between discipline and assault when talking about physical implements like a belt. If you can't get your message across using just your hand then using a belt won't work either and all too often it's used to by the parents to feel powerful rather than doing what's best for their kid. I, like most people in the UK, was never beaten with a belt and I've never been in trouble with the law, nor have I been involved in any fights. Needing to use a belt shows that you've failed as a parent.

Rather than such stone age thinking we should be looking to the real issues - the failings of the education system, a culture that values possessions above deeds, addiction, social deprivation, a lack of upward social mobility, a society fearful of standing up to wrongdoing, a legal system that penalises common sense, etc. The idea that parents beating their children with belts would improve society is frankly ridiculous.

Look at the kids from a lot of other countries that still do this. You will almost never see those kids misbehave.

I was waiting for your holier than thou reply, and you did not fail. Thank you.

If it's the parent's job to discipline the child, then where was this parent at when the cookie was thrown? Or, while the child was chased down? Or, when the child was spanked/hit with a belt? Obviously they have no business being parents at all if they can't even account for the very child they are to watch over, yet discipline.

Funny....30-40 years ago it would have been customary to thank another adult for disciplining your child.

We do have judges, at least in the majority of the civilized world, and their specific charge is to discipline people in public...

I feel that problematic children shouldn't be allowed in public. Parents need to properly raise their children as society at large suffers when they fail to do their job properly. Throwing an object at someone is an attack, an assault at the least, and if it hit the lady it is a battery. If they wanted to be fair, both should have been charged.

And it wasn't long ago that black people had to sit at the back of the bus and drink from separate water fountains because of the colour of their skin. Thankfully society moves on.

The boy's mother and sister, who were also in the store, did not witness the spanking, according to the chief.

Well, that speaks volumes. I don't particularly believe in spanking, but I do certainly believe in discipline. Yes, the mother has a right to be angry, but she should also be embarrassed if anything. I know I'd be.

The same society that used to pull out a chair for a woman? Or, the same society that men stood when addressing a woman? Or the same society that actually said hello to strangers on the street? The same society that would hold a door open?

Yeah, we can all play that game.

Society has moved on....now, did it get better? Or worse?

You're comparing beating a child with a belt to holding open a door for a stranger? :|

People have never been allowed to go around assaulting other people's children. There was physical discipline in schools but that's not comparable to this case.

I can think of plenty of adults worthy of the same treatment but that's not how a civilised society behaves.

"Civilized" society, as you call it, is what has gotten us into the mess we're in now globally. Everybody is afraid of offending everybody else, so nothing gets done so we can all be politically correct. Sometimes a brat needs an ass whoopin', and if the parents won't do it then somebody else needs to. Scolding doesn't work, it doesn't instill any respect, because after they turn about 3 they realize you're not actually doing to "do" anything. Take their toy? They have more. Put them in the corner? Can't leave them there all day. Turn off the internet? They've got toys. Ground them? Whatever. But a spanking? Fear of physical pain is a powerful motivator. I'm not saying that "every" child needs to be spanked for every misbehavior, and I'm not saying we should beat them over the head with clubs, but I totally support spanking with a belt or a paddle if it's relevant or if the child hasn't responded to more "civilized" means of corrective action, and if the kid was running around throwing things at the store clerk, and the mother didn't even witness the spanking, then obviously the parent wasn't doing her job and the kid needed to be taught to respect somebody. Now he's going to grow up with a chip on his shoulder, thinking he's "all that and a bag of chips", or whatever kids say these days, because the one person who actually spanked him got arrested.

Thankfully the number of people who consider it acceptable to beat their children with a belt or other object is shrinking, just like those who oppose gay marriage. If that's the consequence of political correctness then I'm all for it!

    • This looks awesome, I will request access via Steam later this afternoon!
    • Personally, I’ve found that it’s usually worth investing in the infrastructure you don’t want to replace later, especially cabling. Running Cat6A (or better, depending on your needs) during an upgrade is relatively inexpensive compared to having to re-cable a few years down the road. For switches I try to balance current specs with realistic growth. If my budget allows it Ill choose switches with higher uplink speeds which leaves room for expanding later on, but I don’t necessarily overspend on access ports if the endpoints won’t benefit from them anytime soon. One lesson I’ve learned is that planning for scalability pays off. It’s much easier to add devices, VLANs, or higher-bandwidth workloads when your network infrastructure already supports it than to replace hardware later.  What is your budget like?
    • I hate the term, "future-proof." We saw it back in the 90's / 2000's, if not before. You cannot future-proof anything, since there is no definition of how far into the future you plan on prepping for. Best idea is to tell us what you currently have and what its use is at the moment, and we can then offer ideas about some areas that might need an upgrade and other areas that can be left alone.
    • I can agree that it is being used in a small capacity. I worked for a company where their engineers still used XP, and when asked why it was because their sensor software wasn't compatible with newer operating systems and the software was discontinued so they couldn't upgrade the software. Given that the sensors were still in use by companies, they had to continue using XP to support the sensor, otherwise the price to the company would have gone into the millions or billions. Our response was simple: Ok, you can keep the XP machine. But we're removing it from the network. "But then it can't access the Internet or folder shares!" Yup, kinda the point. If someone wants to continue using an unsecure OS they can do, I have no problem with that. But it should be isolated. Simple. I had a fight with a guy in the engineering department for weeks before he finally relented. But we digress.   What do I plan on doing to commemorate the anniversary? Nothing. I have fond memories of the OS, but at the end of the day it's just an OS. If I had some time I might see if I could install it on my Raspberry Pi for a laugh. But my reflex memory with today's OS ideas would probably get me frustrated and I'd uninstall it after 5 mins.
