The Woz: We've Fallen Behind in Smartphones

Recommended Posts

None of this is anti Apple

I would not say falling behind as the WOZ said but more like in a mode of refining it. (the subtle improvements)

The only true complaint that I ever hear about the Iphone is this:

Pay $$$$$ get the phone setup the way you want then about a year later the battery wants to act up... pay $$$ get refurbished phone. (and the refurbished phone sometimes is not right)

Not on all phones but where the root of most complaints that I hear.

Where the much easier approach to fix this would be to make the battery have the ability for the User to change it.

What other features that he is talking about?

But then again we are only seeing short quotes from the whole interview.

Unless maybe he is talking about - Cost effective models to make available to a lot more people. (which if they would post the whole interview... that maybe what he is talking about)

Considering when he worked for Apple he was all about trying to bring down cost so that more people could enjoy the computer. (which it is possible he is thinking that may be the falling behind part by not offering a more cost effective model)

Price has always been a major hurdle for a bunch of people that I know from getting an Iphone.

Though the main point is this:

We do not see the whole interview so we really don't know what he meant by that statement.

Well, I dont know about you. But I dont have the time nor the mood to experiment with every possible combination of toolsets in Android to find what suits me better. I prefer to do other things.

Not saying Android is a waste of time (I have owned two Android phones, one I loved it, the HTC One X) but please, dont pretend everyone has the time or the itch to try every possible app.

So, in a nutshell a Smartphone NEEDS:

A way to make phone calls: Both Android and iOS have that.

A way to send a receive ams: Both Android and iOS have that.

A way to send and receive emails: Both Android and iOS have that.

Alternative communication apps like whatsapp, facebook messenger or skype: Both Android and iOS have that.

A capable web browser: Both Android and iOS have that.

Note taking and voice taking: Both Android and iOS have that.

A weather app: Both Android and iOS have that.

A virtual voice assistant (This is a stretch, a smartphone does not really need it): Both Android and iOS have that.

So no, I don't see how iOS simplicity makes my work any harder either. It's what I use for work now.

Then my question is. Why use so much money on an iPhone to do those simple things when you can get another phone to half the price of an iPhone that do those things as good as an iPhone?

If someone needs minimal, there are feature phones, too. I am not seeing the relevance of your argument.

Please, look at my previous post. I have made a very good case about how minimalism can be present in a smartphone experience. I need all the communicational features of a smartphone, some features that are not present in feature phones (Or are implemented bad, with horrible guy and awkward controls).

Im not interested in a debate about Android vs iOS. What I am interested in is in a community that can respect each other choices and not try to sell each other their own definition of what computing should be like geeky Jehovah's whiteness.

Just because iOS works good for you out of the box, it doesn't mean it will be the same for MANY others.

The exact inverse argument works for Android too and as far as I know rippleman nor me have ever tried to sell you the idea that iOS is better for everyone.

I am all for respect, but I also stand by the folks saying that iOS has gone stale and that the experience isn't much different than when it started. Android is evolving, and so is Windows Phone. I get that some people don't care about change, but in the same spirit of tolerance, you have to realize that not everyone wants the same exact experience year after year. The idea with new phone updates and OS updates is that people feel the DESIRE to move to them, not give a half-hearted sigh and shrug their shoulders.

On that note, OS X has become damn stale too, even though it offers a pleasant computing experience.

Then my question is. Why use so much money on an iPhone to do those simple things when you can get another phone to half the price of an iPhone that do those things as good as an iPhone?

Industrial design. That's my prerogative.

Also, no phone is really expensive. Not in my opinion at least. I wont be broke if I buy a top of the line smartphone. I have owned three.

but in the same spirit of tolerance, you have to realize that not everyone wants the same exact experience year after year.

And believe me, I realize and understand that. Heck, I even understand it, thats why you will never see me saying to someone that x system is better. There is no such thing in my book.

I just expect the same level of respect from others.

Industrial design? Care to elaborate? From an industry standoint the scales are heavily tipped to an android side thanks to being open-source. With Jelly Bean the software is equal ease-of-use to an iPhone, and the hardware is leaps and bounds over what Apple offers.

Any jailbroken iOS is equal players in my books to android. Whatever isn't in the garden is in the cydia shed. For the most part its an equal experience, unless you waste $10 on the android version of songsterr. Its worse than the free website. iOS version is outstanding and 50% more expensive for some reason.

Industrial design is the discipline of designing the looks of the things we use daily.

Gotcha, what worked in 2007 is perfect for 2013.

Not meaning something is wrong with the same interface for 6 years - this works great for Toyota and iOS does a great job at appearing to be stable and providing a consistent experience. It does get people curious as to what Windows and Google are up to though. iPhone 5 and the release of the iPad4 so quickly followed by an iPad mini disappointed quite a few of my iSheep friends.. Their toys were not noticeably increasing in features or speed, but they were diminishing in value long before they got to play them enough.

Gotcha, what worked in 2007 is perfect for 2013.

For me it is. I never said it was the best industrial design for everyone. Or did I? :)

Design taste is totally a personal choice. I love the iPhone 5 looks and feel, but you will never see me saying it's the best. Or should I only like Android phones? (Because I also think the HTC ONE X looks marvelous).

Why are you so confrontative with other's choices?

You should like what you want to, don't let some retard like me on an internet forum change your perspective. I hate iOS for a cell OS, while my girlfriend is about to purchase a new iPhone 5...

I personally use both a lot, nearly every day over a few different devices (ipad, ipod, nexus and iconia). So to each their own. iOS is consistent across EVERYTHING, pads, pods, tablets, even OSX is getting close. My SGSII, nexus 7 and Acer Iconia, while all running android, all operate COMPLETELY different while still being somewhat similar.

In my humble little bubble of a world every phone would run android OS and every tablet would run iOS. and every computer would be running a linux kernel. Thats just me, thats whats reliable and functional and works for me. Im also incredibly frugal. I dont like spending $800 on a 6x3 inch piece of metal I'm likely to break or lose. my $250 SGSII outright is a much better option. I can replace it 3 times and still be on top.

I like how many devs on android offer free side-load apps on their development blog, while their play listing costs money... Things like that, the flexibility. It comes at a price though. Learning curve for android is likely as steep as it was for linux.

I personally find iOS to be ridiculously expensive for its featureset these days. In 2007 it was the absolute best bang for your dollar. These days android has superseeded it in flexibility, windows in performance. If it weren't for jailbreaking to allow SBsettings, XBMC, barrel, quick-toggles, and the many more talented 'under the table' iOS devs, there would be no way I would ever touch iOS again.

my 2006 macbook and 2007 mac mini which hardly ever see any downtime are working as good today as the day I bought them from the apple reseller. Very few people can say that about any computer.

Just because iOS works good for you out of the box, it doesn't mean it will be the same for MANY others. You will still be able to get a much better results if you set up an Android phone. No brands knows what's the best way for it's users to use their phones. It's only you that knows that.

isn't that what i just said with IOS? and no, I don't want to set up Android phone. Been there, done that, hassle, no thanks. You can tell me all day long that being left handed is better, but in the end, if I am right handed, I will not teach myself to be left handed just to please the masses of Android users. From what i been seeing in the last year, here on neowin shifted from apple worship (allegedly) to android worship, my goodness, its just a phone, get out and enjoy life a bit more LOL

isn't that what i just said with IOS? and no, I don't want to set up Andriod phone. Been there, done that, hassle, no thanks.

Then you will agree that Android will be better for your daily usage if you set it up your way instead of using it out of the box.

It takes anyone with some braincells to figure out how to add a lil widget. If peoples have problems to learn those simple steps, then i'm afraid the problem isn't Android, but the user. And those users isn't normal then.

ANY users who have the ability to use a normal computer. Doesn't matter if it's Windows, Mac OSX or Linux, they WILL have the understanding on how to use an Android device easily then.

And I respect that.

I really wish for a computing standard based on the GNU/Linux kernel and logistics but with the OS X aesthetics (Darwin is not enough). I really wish to stop depending on some closed source app suites and addons. However and cant deny their value.

Then you will agree that Android will be better for your daily usage if you set it up your way instead of using it out of the box.

no, i will not agree to that. I tried it, didn't like it. Had it set up the way i want and STILL did not like it. Earlier today i had some Jehovah's stop by, this reminds me a lot of that situation.

And my 2005 Dell laptop works just as well today as it did when I purchased it 8 years ago. My main desktop computer is from 2007/2008. My tablet pc is from 2008. All working fine and running Windows 8.

The difference? My 2005 laptop is still supported by Microsoft. Your 2006 and 2007 Apple computers? Support dropped. No Mountain Lion for you.

Just because YOU didn't like it doesn't mean Android wont be better by setting it up your way.

Out of curiosity, how well does Windows 8 run on that?

It runs as good as it runs Windows XP on it.

What if iOS is just his way?

Yes, is possible, if he says he had used Android and customized it then you have to give him the benefit of the doubt on that.

Then he is lucky.

You two share the same laptop?

Have you seen the specs Windows 8 nees to run good?

A computer from 2005 would have no problems with that.

The Woz is right. Apple has lost the edge. The old man died and nothing has been the same. They seem to have lost track of what they are doing. They don't know right from left. They are out of new ideas and innovations and it shows. The Woz should return to Apple as a consultant to help them out before they really sink the ship.

    • New AMD graphics driver fixes install issues and FSR 4.1 crashes on RX 7000 GPUs by Taras Buria AMD is rolling out yet another graphics driver. Version 26.6.4 is now available for download, bringing two important fixes. One is for those still using Windows 10 and having trouble installing driver 26.6.2. In fact, this patch is coming from the recently released hotfix, so it is not new if you are already running version 26.6.3. The second fix is for RX 7000 owners. AMD recently brought FSR 4.1 support to the previous-gen graphics cards, but there was a bug with certain games crashing when using FSR 4.1. I experienced this issue with Forza Horizon 6, so today's driver should take care of that. Here is the official changelog: Intermittent install issue seen when installing AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.6.2 on Windows® 10 systems for Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Intermittent application crash may be observed in some games with AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 enabled on Radeon™ RX 7000 series graphics products. Known issues include the following: Intermittent application crash or driver timeout may be observed while playing Battlefield™ 6 on AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. AMD is actively working on a resolution with the developer to be released as soon as possible. Texture flickering or corruption may appear while playing Battlefield™ 6 with AMD Record and Stream on some AMD graphics products. AMD FSR Upscaling and AMD FSR Frame Generation may show as inactive in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition while playing Battlefield™ 6 when enabled on Radeon™ RX 9000 series graphics products. Failure to install may be observed while installing AI Bundle components in some regions with limited access to HuggingFace and GitHub. Model flickering or rendering failure may be observed in Maxon Cinema 4D and Blender on Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.3.1. Intermittent application crash may be observed on some models while running Blender on Radeon™ RX 7000 series and above graphics products. Users experiencing this issue are recommended to install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.3.1. You can download the AMD Radeon driver 26.6.4 from the official website here. • Amazon may use OpenAI and Nova models after Anthropic reportedly raises costs by Karthik Mudaliar Amazon is reportedly considering to use OpenAI models and even its own Nova family of AI models after Anthropic raised the cost of using Claude inside Amazon services. According to a report from The Information, Amazon is weighing its options to reduce costs under a new arrangement with Anthropic. But back in April, Amazon said it would invest $5 billion more in Anthropic, with the possibility of adding up to another $20 billion if certain commercial milestones are met. That investment actually came on top of another $8 billion Amazon had already put into the Claude maker. Anthropic, meanwhile, committed to spend more than $100 billion over 10 years on AWS technologies, including Amazon’s Trainium chips. Amazon isn't just a customer of Anthropic but also one of the most important backers and cloud partners. This is why it makes it interesting that Amazon is considering other alternatives to handle its internal workloads. Although Amazon has been building its own options for a while now. Its Nova family of AI models was announced in late 2024 for Amazon Bedrock, with models aimed at text, image, and video tasks. Amazon pitched the model around cost and latency at that time. With that said, OpenAI has also become a more realistic option recently for AWS customers as well as for Amazon itself. Earlier this year, OpenAI brought its latest models and Codex coding agent to Amazon Bedrock, after changes to its previously more restrictive Microsoft cloud arrangement. This allowed AWS to serve even those customers who wanted other alternatives from Claude, without having to move workloads out of Amazon's cloud. Evaluating alternatives could also be due to commercial pressure and not necessarily a sign of a damaged partnership between Amazon and Anthropic. Whether or not Amazon is actually considering switching entirely to OpenAI's models or its own Nova models remains unknown at this moment.
    • Samsung introduces new AI classroom tools and interactive displays at ISTELive 2026 by Fiza Ali Samsung has announced several new education-focused software features and interactive displays for schools during ISTELive 2026, taking place in Orlando, Florida, from 28 June to 1 July. The focus of these updates is on making shared classroom displays easier to use for teachers while giving IT administrators more control over managing devices. One of the key additions is the Samsung Account Management Solution (AMS). In many schools, multiple teachers share the same interactive display throughout the day, which means signing in and setting everything up can become repetitive. With AMS, teachers can log in by scanning a QR code or tapping an NFC-enabled ID card. Once signed in, their personalised workspace, including wallpapers, bookmarks, app shortcuts, and files, can be instantly accessed through Home Personalisation. Samsung has also included a screen lock feature, allowing teachers to lock the display if they need to step away briefly. Furthermore, the company is also updating its Education Portal with new tools designed for school IT administrators. The portal will allow IT administrators to register teachers, enrol devices, and manage user access from a central dashboard. Administrators can also link NFC cards to teacher accounts, making sign-ins quicker across shared displays. Another addition is a Tags feature that lets schools organise displays by building or classroom. Those tags can also be used to send emergency notifications to selected Samsung Interactive Displays through compatible platforms such as InformaCast and Raptor. Moreover, the tech giant's AI Assistant is gaining several new features aimed at supporting everyday classroom tasks such as lesson planning and classroom engagement. One of the features is Circle to Search, which lets teachers circle text or images on the display to quickly find related information, videos, or web results without interrupting the lesson. The content can then be brought into Samsung Whiteboard. Another feature, Live Transcript, converts spoken lessons into real-time captions, which could be useful for students with hearing impairments or those in multilingual classrooms. The AI Assistant also introduces AI Summary and AI Quiz. The summary tool creates summaries of recorded lessons, while AI Quiz generates questions based on lesson content so teachers can quickly check how well students are following along. Teachers signed in through Samsung AMS can also return to their previous AI-generated lesson materials without logging in again. Alongside the software updates, Samsung has expanded its Android-based Interactive Display range with three new models: the WAF-S, WAFX-PS, and WAHX-M. The WAF-S and WAFX-PS ship with Android 16, bringing updates to security, accessibility, and overall usability while maintaining compatibility with Google's education services including Google Classroom and Google Drive through EDLA certification. Meanwhile, the new WAHX-M is the biggest addition to the lineup, introducing a 98-inch display for larger spaces such as lecture halls and conference rooms. It will also be available in 65-inch, 75-inch and 86-inch sizes. Samsung says the WAHX-M further includes on-device AI features such as voice commands, text-to-speech, and an AI calculator, alongside support for Samsung AMS and AI Assistant. Samsung AI Assistant has been available since April, while Samsung AMS and the updated Education Portal will begin rolling out in July.
    • It's been $24 (single) or $89 (4-pack) for many days on both Amazon and Walmart as far as I know. That isn't a big discount. If these end up like the 1st gen, the 4-pack will routinely get down around $80, give or take a dollar. I think they have even hit $69 at times.
